Chapter 7 With a heavy heart, I returned to the streets of Portknowe. Thorne was right—the first light of the rising sun was turning the eastern sky pale. In another hour, I’d be setting foot on the red priest’s ship, and I shivered at the inevitability of it. There were fewer shadows between the buildings, and I wasn’t taking as much care to stay within them. I was still a few blocks from the inn when a guard patrol spotted me. “Stop!” one of them cried. I halted immediately, too sad to be afraid, and pushed back the hood of my cloak. “It’s me, Princess Rose,” I said wearily. The lead soldier looked confused. “What are you doing wandering the streets, milady?” “I had a bad dream and needed some air. Will you escort me back to the inn, please?” He could scarcely argue with that. H
