Chapter 5

Luna did not go back to her room. She couldn’t. The walls would feel too close. Her thoughts were already too loud. Instead, she kept walking. Different woman. Same story. The words echoed. “No,” she whispered. “That doesn’t make sense.” Her mother wasn’t like that. Was she? Luna slowed down. Because suddenly… She wasn’t sure. Everything had happened so fast. Too fast. Too perfect. “Something is wrong,” she said quietly. She turned. There was only one person who had answers. She found him outside. Hamilton. Of course. “You could have told me,” she said. “I did.” “No. You warned me.” Silence. “I’m not here to explain everything.” “Then what are you here for?” “To make sure you don’t make a mistake.” “And the mistake is?” “Trusting him.” “I’m not stupid.” “I didn’t say you were.” “But you’re treating me like I am.” Something flickered in his eyes. “You just got here,” he said. “You don’t understand.” “Then explain.” Her voice was firm now. “I’m not pretending everything is fine.” Silence. Then, “He meets them when they’re vulnerable.” Her chest tightened. “He makes it look like he’s saving them.” “That’s not what happened with my mom.” “Isn’t it?” She didn’t answer. Because she wasn’t sure. “And the daughters?” she asked quietly. His jaw tightened. “When they’re there… he notices.” A cold feeling settled in her chest. “I don’t like that.” “You shouldn’t.” Silence. Then, “He’s interested in you.” The words hit hard. “No,” she said quickly. But her voice wasn’t steady. “You felt it,” he said. She had. “I thought I was imagining it.” “You weren’t.” Silence. Heavy. Real. “This is insane,” she whispered. He stepped closer. “Don’t be alone with him.” “You’re overreacting.” “I’m not.” She looked at him. And for the first time… She believed him. That scared her the most. “What about you?” she asked. “I know how to deal with him.” “And I don’t?” “No.” Too fast. Too certain. “I’m not helpless.” “I know.” Silence. Then, quieter “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” She stared at him. “Why?” He hesitated. “I just am.” Not an answer. But it felt real. “Luna.” She looked at him. “You need to trust me.” That word again. Trust. But this time… It didn’t feel like control. It felt real. “I don’t trust anyone in this house yet,” she said. A pause. Then, “But I think I trust you more than him.” Something shifted in his expression. Subtle. But there. Luna looked away. Because somehow… That felt more dangerous than everything else. And she wasn’t sure why.
