Chapter 4: Secrets in the Shadows

Luna's eyes fluttered open, and her thinking was foggy. The antiseptic room came into focus, and she knew she was back in her new quarters with Caine. Was this a dream? Was everything? Touching her forehead, she felt clammy. She heard activity outside the door. Acknowledging Caine's voice, Luna strained to hear... Aria's? Aria hissed, "You promised me, Caine. You claimed that this marriage was only for show." Caine said sharply, "Keep your voice down. I still remember our agreed-upon decision. Though it may take time, this farce is going to stop. I will manage to find a method." Luna's heart sank. All of it had been a lie, then. Every warning and emotional moment fit a complex plan. Determined not to let them hear her, she swallowed back a sob. Luna's grief turned into resolve when the footsteps stopped. She wouldn't be a pawn in their play. Should Caine wish to get out of this marriage, she would be pleased to assist him. She still needed answers, though, initially. Luna committed the next few weeks to her healing studies. She looked up the well-known werewolf researcher her dad had mentioned, Dr. Lyra. The old lady's eyes brightened when Luna demonstrated her aptitudes. "Interesting," Dr. Lyra whispered as she studied Luna's glowing hands. "I have only heard about such things in antiquated literature. How did you come upon this capacity?" Luna discussed events at the Moon Festival and with her grandma. As Lyra listened closely, she made notes. "Your skills could change werewolf medicine," she said. "Still, we should be conscious. Such power will attract negative attention." As they explored Luna's gift more, odd inconsistencies started to show up—treatments violating accepted medical knowledge and patient records with improbable recovery times. "Something's not right," Luna said as she went over the papers. "These mending rates—they're beyond even what I can do." Lyra asked questions with raised eyebrows. "Someone seems to have been experimenting lately, broadening the range of possibilities." Luna felt a cold chill running down her spine. "But who?" she asked. "And for what?" Through their investigation, they came upon forgotten nooks in the boundaries of both packs and dusty archives. Ancient books Luna found discussed ceremonies using werewolf magic to enhance the natural talents of a wolf. One night she slipped back into her rooms and heard Beta Roran whispering quietly. "The girl's power is growing," he said. Luna's breath paused. "We will soon be ready for the final phase." Which phase? Luna wondered as she worked harder, driven to find the truth. But as she dug further, her position grew increasingly dangerous. Everywhere she turned, she felt eyes on her back and glimpses of strange wolves staring back. Caine stayed distant throughout. Luna's cold attitude was the only thing driving his will. She would show him and everyone else she was not to be underestimated. Months passed and vanished. Luna's powers evolved, becoming more controlled. She could now heal injuries she once couldn't. But along with this growth came a burning discontent. She uncovered a scheme involving both packs that defied her understanding—at least at first. One evening, Luna was working on her notes in a peaceful section of the pack library when a shadow dropped across her table. Looking up, she saw Caine poised above her. "We should talk," he added in a low, eager voice. Luna's gaze hardened. "Nothing I could say to you would be relevant." Caine leaned in after a quick glance around. "This place isn't safe. Come see me in the ancient hunting hut at midnight. It's absolutely essential." He disappeared before she could react. Luna thought about turning down his request, but curiosity won out. At midnight, she left the pack compound and headed for the deserted cabin. Caine was waiting, pacing nervously. Relief crossed his face the moment he saw her. "You came." "Make it quick," Luna snapped. "I have better things to do than listen to more of your lies." Caine's face stiffened. "I have not been completely honest with you, true. But not for the reasons you believe." He let out a big breath. "Luna, I work covertly for agents. I've been investigating a conspiracy that might endanger our packs and maybe all werewolves." Luna's mind reeled. "WHAT? But your father..." "All of it is part of my cover," Caine replied firmly. "Beta Roran isn't my father. I was dispatched to learn about his goals and breach his network of acquaintances." As Caine spoke, pieces began to fall into place. Beta Roran's interest in her skills, the unusual medical records, the hushed conversations. "They're trying to create some kind of super-wolf," Caine said. "Drawing on old rites and stolen magic. Their plan mostly depends on your healing gift." Luna shook her head. "Why are you telling me this now?" Regret filled his gaze. "Because I care about you, Luna. More importantly, I can't bear to see you used as a pawn in their game." Before Luna could process this, a menacing snarl erupted. Rising from the shadows, Beta Roran's enraged eyes glowed. "I had such great expectations for you, Caine," he said. "But you've outlived your usefulness." Luna had never seen Roran change into his bigger, more terrifying wolf shape. He lunged at Caine, teeth bared. Luna acted on instinct. Her hands spread, and she threw herself between them. Roran let out a surge from her hands and was thrown flying backward. The forest erupted in chaos. More wolves came, obedient to Roran. Luna and Caine were soon surrounded, fighting for their lives. As Luna battled, her will shot through her veins. Now her healing energy was a weapon against their assailants, and she moved with the elegance and force she had never known. Despite her enhanced skills, they were outnumbered. After a hard blow to the side, Caine collapsed in a heap. Luna hurried to him, her hands glowing as she tried to stop the bleeding. Roran was already moving forward, his large body blocking the moonlight. "Your power will be mine," he growled. "One way or another." Luna stepped between Roran and Caine's prone bodies. Her energy was building, throbbing in waves that broke the atmosphere. "You seek power?" she spoke steadily, though terrified. "Let me show you what true power consists of." As Roran lunged, Luna let off everything she had. Blinding light erupted from her body, enveloping the clearing. She felt the ground quake under her feet and heard cries of suffering and chaos. Luna considered herself still being alone when the light faded. The enemy wolves had vanished, leaving only charred ground behind. But so had Caine. Luna spun quickly, searching for him. "Caine? Caine!" Her voice echoed in the empty woodland. Neither he nor anyone else was visibly present. Luna's pulse raced as her circumstances became clear. She was alone, her secret discovered. Now she had to decide. Should she escape, hoping to avoid Roran's reach? Or stand and fight, using her skills to protect those she loved? Luna straightened her shoulders as the first light of the day lit the trees. She knew she owed something. She had to embrace her fate, whatever the cost. Luna turned and sprinted toward the pack compound, glancing one more time over the battlefield. She had to prepare for war. The search had begun.
