Tension builds

The following week, Elena walked into Dr. Sterling’s lecture with her chin lifted high. She had promised herself she wouldn’t let him rattle her again, but the moment his gaze swept across the class and landed on her, her pulse betrayed her—quick, restless, hungry. He didn’t look away. “Miss Carter,” he said, his voice smooth but laced with steel. “Since you appear eager today, perhaps you’ll explain the theory I just outlined?” Dozens of heads turned toward her. Elena’s cheeks burned, but she forced herself to stand. She recited what she had managed to absorb, her voice wavering at first before gaining strength. When she finished, there was a brief silence. A corner of his mouth twitched—approval, perhaps? But it was gone in an instant. “Not terrible,” Dr. Sterling replied coolly. “Though you have a tendency to oversimplify.” A ripple of laughter stirred among the students. Elena clenched her fists under the desk. “Maybe,” she said before she could stop herself, “or maybe you prefer complexity where it doesn’t exist.” The class went silent. A challenge. Dr. Sterling’s eyes darkened, locking on hers. The air between them thickened, charged with something sharp and dangerous. “Stay after,” he said softly, too softly for anyone else to hear. Her heart skipped, her resolve faltering. But she gave a curt nod and sat down, biting her lip hard enough to taste copper. Later, during a practical demonstration, he moved among the rows, checking students’ work. Elena was scribbling notes when his presence loomed beside her. “You’re holding it wrong,” he murmured, bending low. The warmth of his breath brushed her ear. His hand slid over hers, adjusting the instrument with a deliberate slowness that sent shivers racing up her arm. Elena froze, breath hitching, caught between pulling away and leaning in. His hand lingered a moment longer than necessary before he straightened. “Better,” he said curtly, though his eyes betrayed something unspoken. She could barely write afterward, her fingers trembling. By the time the class ended, she had convinced herself she would leave immediately, avoid him, pretend she hadn’t heard his command earlier. But as the others shuffled out, his voice came again—calm, patient, inescapable. “Miss Carter.” Her steps faltered. She turned slowly. “Office. Now.” Her stomach tightened, her throat dry. But her feet moved anyway, betraying her resolve. She followed him down the corridor, every step echoing like a countdown. Students glanced curiously as she passed, some whispering, some smirking. Inside, the office door shut with a soft click. He turned, leaning against the desk, arms folded, gaze sharp as a blade. “You enjoy testing me, don’t you?” he said, his tone dangerously low. Elena’s pulse thundered. “Only because you make it too easy.” For a heartbeat, silence stretched between them. His jaw clenched, and his eyes dropped briefly—too briefly—to her lips before snapping back to her eyes. The space between them was unbearable. But then, with iron control, he pushed himself upright, straightening his tie. “Go,” he said flatly. Elena blinked. “What?” “Before I forget myself.” Her breath caught, but he was already turning away, gathering his papers. Dismissal. Command. Restraint. She left, heart racing, knowing one thing with terrifying clarity: whatever this was, it wasn’t going away. It was only just beginning.
