THE SPRING OF COMBARBIO
In an excellent position to resisting enemy attacks, the castle on the mountaintop clearing of Mount San Lorenzo was no longer the powerful fortress of long ago and, even with numerous interventions of maintenance, it began to show signs of structural collapse. With the help of a scant group of stonecutters and masons brought in from the countryside, Bonzio got busy with the enormous job of restructuring. But it wasn't simple and, even with hard work and willpower, the results were inadequate. From a distance, the edifice was a castle but, the closer one came, it had the semblance of a patched together, improvised vestige. One side of the mountain was slowly caving in, and there was little to nothing to do about it. Sooner or later the foundation would collapse.
