Chapter 10- Ashley Awakens

651 Words
Ashley woke before sunrise. She hadn’t slept much. Not because she couldn’t. Because she didn’t need to. For the first time in five years, her mind was quiet. There were no late-night calls waiting for Jacob to come home. No unanswered messages. No wondering whether she had said the wrong thing. No trying to protect someone who had already decided to walk away from her. Instead, there was clarity. Ashley stood beside the window in her father’s estate, watching the early morning light stretch slowly across the grounds. Five years ago, she left this house believing she was choosing love over power. She didn’t regret that decision. Not then. And not now. Because she had loved Jacob honestly. Completely. Without conditions. That was never her mistake. Trusting him had been. Behind her, the quiet sound of footsteps crossed the marble floor. “You’re awake early.” David Ashe’s voice was calm, but observant. Ashley didn’t turn around. “I always wake up early before important meetings,” she replied. Her father stepped beside her. “You’re not nervous.” It wasn’t a question. Ashley smiled slightly. “I’m not invisible anymore.” David Ashe studied her carefully. For five years, he had watched his daughter protect a man who never understood what she gave up for him. Now that version of Ashley was gone. “The board contacted me this morning,” he said. Ashley finally turned. “They confirmed attendance?” “Yes.” “And Jacob?” she asked. “He doesn’t know yet.” Ashley nodded slowly. That was exactly how she wanted it. Not surprise. Not revenge. Clarity. Jacob deserved to understand the truth the same way she had learned his. Publicly. Directly. Without warning. “Legal finalized the voting structure,” David continued. “You still hold thirty percent.” “I know.” “They’re nervous,” he added. Ashley wasn’t surprised. “They should be.” For five years she had protected Jones Holdings quietly. For five years she made decisions without recognition. For five years she chose loyalty over authority. Now, everything has changed. “What are you planning to do?” her father asked. Ashley walked across the office slowly. On the desk sat a folder she had already reviewed twice that morning. Board attendance confirmation. Investor confidence reports. Leadership structure agreements. And the original document Jacob had never read. The agreement that tied her name to his company long before he ever called it successful. “I’m not taking anything from him,” she said finally. David Ashe raised an eyebrow slightly. “No?” “I’m taking back what I protected.” The difference mattered. Because Ashley had never wanted control. She had wanted a partnership. She had wanted respect. She had wanted honesty. Instead, she received divorce papers. In a ballroom. In front of strangers. Ashley picked up the shareholder agreement carefully. “He said there was nothing left to discuss,” she said quietly. David Ashe watched her closely. “And now?” he asked. Ashley closed the folder. Now, there was everything to discuss. “He deserves the truth,” she said calmly. “He deserved it five years ago.” “And now he’s going to hear it from the board.” Ashley walked toward the door. “Not from the board.” David Ashe paused. “From me.” Her voice was steady. Confident. Final. For five years, Ashley Ashe Jones protected the company Jacob believed he built alone. For five years she protected the man she believed would never stand against her. But the woman who walked into the charity gala as Ashley Jones, was not the woman preparing to walk into Jones Holdings now. This time, she wasn’t coming as his wife. She was coming as his equal. And very soon, Jacob Jones was finally going to understand exactly who he had lost.
