Oh, Lucian’s party is happening tonight. I totally forgot about that.
Lucian McKay is one of the hottest seniors in the school right now. He has always been kind of one of the popular kids. With curly brown hair like that and a charming smile he has all the girls dropping like flies at the flicker of his wink. They are actually so disappointing because I do not see the appeal in him.
Sure, he is cute but not drop dead gorgeous.
I bite my tongue to keep from telling them exactly what I think and put an end to all the swooning, but I am tired of Emily taking jibes at me, come on, it is the first day of school. I much rather be settling into my new class and getting ready for our new homeroom teacher to enter.
This is my last year in high school does not mean I get to be unserious this year too. I made a promise to mama and the shrink, Miss Clarice that this school year would be different and things will hopefully look up. Going to Lucian’s welcome back to school party is going to be doing the direct opposite of what I am not supposed to do.
All that alcohol, loud music and raging intoxicated teen does not scream good decisions. Mix booze, horny boys and drunk girls together become either very good or very bad.
Emma is squealing and shouting, pointing at some video on her phone and Erica is swooning at a half naked Lucian party flier. From the corner of my eyes I watch Kim absorb all the drama with her full attention.
I swallow my amused snicker, keeping my face poker straight.
“Are you coming for the party, Elsa?” Emily folds her arms. Erica and Emma perk up at the question and inch closer.
“And how is that your business Emily? You want to put a tracker on me … or worse, steal my dress.” I gasp dramatically.
Her eyes narrow to slits and she scowls at me.
“You don’t have to be a b***h about it.” Emily spits back.
I scoff and give her a ‘are you for real?’ look.
Emily is the one who dragged her butt and that of her cronies to my locker to be rude to me on the first day back from summer break. One would almost think that she missed me the way she is hounding me. Between the both of us she is the only one that is being a b***h.
“It’s not like Lucian invited you anyways, I bet I can get everyone to not invite you for their parties this school year, you do well not to get on my bad side.” She says.
Thankfully, those are her last words to me because she turns on her heels, the click clack of her heels echoing across the white floors.
“See you around guys.” I give a small wave and sigh in relief at the sweet silence. Gone is the high-pitched screaming and squealing coming from these deranged girls.
Imagine today being the first day back and they spend their time here with me.
“Did you hear that? Omg, how could it have slipped my mind? I am so silly.” Kim says, frantically scrolling through her phone.
“Calm down Kim, it is just some lame party. Trust me, it is not all that.” I tell her and she gives me the same look I gave Emily.
I just roll my eyes but deep down I know she is right. There are about six parties that we all look forward to throughout senior year and Lucian’s welcome back party is going to be the talk of the town and the hottest gist till another big event comes up again. All the popular kids even some juniors get special exclusive invites to the party and some later sneak in when everyone has had enough booze.
“Are you going for the party? Tell me you are.” She grabs my hand and squeeze.
“Are you going?” I flip the question on her.
“I would have love to go to but mother insisted we have dinner with Ernest and his kids and I can’t say no to going.” She bemoans.
“How is that going? She and Ernest…? Things are getting serious, yes?” I ask her.
“She says they are taking it slow but knowing mother, her meaning of slow is full throttle on the gas pedal. I am scared they want to bombard us with some silly announcement that is why his kids are going to be there to.” She sighs, all talk about the party forgotten as she wistfully recounts to me her family drama over the break.
Before the end of last year, Ernest and Mrs. Hanson started going out on frequent dates, Kim was happy because her mother was out of the house more, which meant she could sneak out of the house and meet Haley at the park to hang out together. Now things are heating up fast and she does not like it anymore. Seems someone is no longer having fun.
“s**t, this means no more going to the park with you guys because I will be stuck babysitting the two rascals and that is the last thing I want to be stuck doing on Friday nights.” She groans already imagining the worst things that can happen if her mother and sweet Ernest decided to announce their relationship as serious, worse is if they get engaged.
The bell goes off and i turn to Kim and hold up my hand.
“You can crash out later, we have World history for first period and we need to get to class stat.” grabbing the sleeve of her top I drag her along with me.
Her hand clutch the strap of her bag and hurries beside me.
A few heads turn around to watch us pass, they keep out of our way.
I picture how they see us; myself; tall. Blonde with a neat skirt and plain white top to match and the white and black latest edition Chanel clasp book bag and my friend; her eccentric electric blue hair and blue dress. She looks pretty and I look good too.
Inwardly, I smile. This year is going to be a fun one.
