Chapter 10

“let’s go girls, I don’t have to stay here and listen this s**t, thanks for running lunch for us guys.” I say blandly. Snatching my tray and standing to my feet, I grab my bag and sling it across my shoulder. Kim follows my lead, grabbing her tray and her bag she avoids everyone eyes and walks closer to me. Haley hesistates, like she wants to stay back and hangout with them. One look at my blank face and she carries her tray and pushes the chair backwards. “You guys just ruined our lunch, I owe you one, remember that.” I tell Hades and Emily. She looks like she wants to bite my head off, I just roll my eyes at them and turn around with Haley and Kim following closely behind me. “why Elsa, I was just going to ask Emily what dress she is wearing to the party and maybe I can convince Matt to drop me off at the mall on his way to soccer practice.” She grumbles. “It is just a dress Haley, you can wear any other dress you want. You have tons of pretty dresses.” Kim interjects reminding her of filled closet but she just waves her away. Clearly, she has plans of her own and she wants something different or should I say a copy of what that skank Emily is going to be wearing to the party. We need to have a chat about her obsession with Emily, the three Es and Hades and Emily’s relationship. I am getting concerned for my friend. I get it before it was fun to listen to their life problems and watch their drama from the outside but soon I got tired and then school was out, we were in different places but Haley kept tabs on them. She is in many gossip group chats and talks nonstop about parties and I wonder if her plan for our last year in high school is to party it away. “Yeah I know but I need a signature piece. Something to wow everyone, someone takes my picture and posts it online and just like that I’m popular.” She grins bouncing up and down. Her wavy brown hair all over the place. We stand at the entrance of the cafeteria, I wait for them to dump out their tras so we can head to our lockers really quick, grab some books and that chocolate bar then head to class before the bell goes off. We move through a haze of bodies; athletes throwing a ball in the air and girls screeching as the ball whirls past them really fast. “Are you going to the party Elsa, you never gave me an answer when I asked you the last time.” Haley asks me. “I can’t go. Mother won’t let me.” I tell her. She scoffs so hard in disbelief. Like she cannot believe the words that are coming out of my mouth. But it is the truth. “Since when has she stopped you from going out to parties or hanging out with us? She doesn’t care.” She says. My heart seizes for a second and starts back up again. She did not mean it in a literal way but it still stung to hear those words. There was a time I would have believed them to be truth about her, a different time. ”Well, she does and I have a curfew now.” I drop another bomb and Haley and Kim just look at me without blinking. “This is very strange. Are you in trouble?” Haley fires a series of questions at me. “What did you do?” Kim asks me too, a worried look etched across her face. “What did I do?” I ask them to clarify because I have not even hinted at anything happening for me to have a curfew. “Why are you guys assuming that I am the problem.” It is my turn to grumble. “Because your mother can do no wrong and she is so free with you, the closest mom among us three.” Kim answers earnestly. “You guys need to stop fangirling over my mother. And no I did not do anything wrong.” I slam my locker shut and turn back around to look at my friends. “Now cut this questions out and let’s head to class.” I fold my arms and tell them. “You are hiding something Elsa, I am going to find out what it is sooner or later, why not just tell me now?!” Haley pouts. “Because now is not the time to be talking about me and my mom guys, we can chat later and like I said before nothing happened okay? Things change and people grow up.” I shrug my shoulders. “Yeah okay, I will take that for now. Don’t think you’ve escaped me yet Elsa.” She waves her pinky at me. “Okay Sherlock Holmes.” I joke. The three of us break into laughter. Kim leans against the lockers to catch her breath. The first bells ring through the loud hallway microphones. The first bells are the ten minutes warning bell for students to get to their classes. “We have to go, I cannot be late for Math class.” I tell both of them. “You two go ahead, I have something to take care of. I will catch up with you guys.” Haley says pressing her phone distractedly “Where are you going?” Kim asks her. She looks up and smiles. “I need to take care of something, I am right behind you too.” She waves at us and disappears into the sea of bodies. “Let’s head to class, I hope we get good seats. I can’t handle seating at the back.” Kim says. “Yeah, Michael and his gang of nerds always snag the first three rows of seat, very annoying but apparently seats are on a first come first serve basis. “Okay, let’s hurry.” We weave our way down the hallway to the last room on the right. We get there late but manage to snag two free seats in the second row and are settling in just as the second bell goes off.
