Chapter Two DYMITRI The door was locked when I tried the knob. As if that would stop me. I took a step back, lifted my leg and kicked it in. The door was flimsy and once partly open, I twisted it off its hinges and tossed it aside. A dark stairwell lay beyond the door. At the bottom of the darkness, a faint light buzzed on the side of the wall—a meager lightbulb illuminating the crooked stairs and peeling walls. With the door out of the way, the call grew even stronger. It was almost deafening, buzzing through every cell in my body. I descended the stairs two at a time, landing at the bottom with a grunt.
