Chapter Three DYMITRI The court physician was an elderly man who peered at us through half-rimmed spectacles as we ushered him inside the chamber. “I’ve never treated human women before,” he said, before reaching out to pick up my mate’s limp arm. As he took her pulse, a throb of possessive rage rushed through me. I shoved it down. The physician was only trying to help them. “But the basic principles are the same as for our kind,” he continued. “They are dehydrated and exhausted, chafed from being in restraints, but I can’t find anything else physically wrong with them at the moment. Not without speaking to them and doing a more thorough exam. When they wake up, they will both need bed rest, and lots of fluids.” I nodded my thanks and the physician soon took his leave.
