Evee jolted up right, she was sitting on the mossy shore of the pond from her dream again.
Great, is this just what my life is now? I slowly go insane and wake up in some dream forest after every incident.
“Worse places you could end up after the crap you’ve had to deal with the last few days”
Evee’s head snapped around; the voice had come from just behind her. Seeing the eccentric woman from the hospital room sitting feet away, she scrambled backward nearly falling off the embankment.
“Is there no escape from you people?! Even in my dreams I can’t catch a break!”
Evee was past scared and falling quickly into severe irritation.
Cali put her hands up and just remained seated calmly on the ground.
“I wouldn’t be so quick to run, this isn’t even your dream you know.”
She shrugged and slowly rose, looking back at the line of trees and out over the pond. Evee narrowed her eyes watching Cali’s hands and movements carefully.
“What do you mean it’s not my dream, I’ve dreamt of this place before, there was even a magic lady and a giant…”
She trailed off thinking about the angelic woman she had met in this place the last time she had lost consciousness. Cali appeared giddy and plopped back down criss cross legs in front of Evee.
“A magic lady?? Do tell, what did she look like, what happened, did she speak to you?”
Evee leaned back a bit, overwhelmed by Cali and her bizarre excitement.
“If I’m not dreaming, what is this place?”
Cali looked a bit disappointed but leaned back on her hands relaxing before she spoke. “From what I can tell, this is an immortal realm, that’s kind of like the space between us and the realm of gods. Which God is hard to tell but if I had to guess I’d say you were granted an audience with the Moon Goddess if you were here before. Nice place, how’d you get in?”
Cali kept staring out at the scenery as she spoke, Evee looked at her even more confused than before.
“Moon Goddess? What do you mean get in? I’m sorry this is all just insane.”
Cali leaned forward again, looking more sternly than she might have intended and scrunched her nose tilting her head to the side as she looked Evee over once more.
“Is it really so hard to believe that there are forces in this world more powerful than the boring people we see everyday? When you were young you never believed in magic and fairytales? Perhaps the feeling of lost control is what you keep thinking is ‘insane’ because no one I know thinks you’re crazy, if anything you’re taking this rather well. To be granted safe haven in the passage between the Moon Goddess’ realm is actually pretty exceptional, and twice no less.”
Cali smiled at her waiting for the flood of questions. Evee took a deep breath deciding what to ask first:
E: So this place is real?
C: What is real, really? For the purposes of your understanding, yes, as real as anything can be.
E: We were transported here?
C: Ah, see that’s a no. Your consciousness was granted access to this place and mine just tagged along to help, I doubt I was invited, explaining the lack of other beings.
E: You asked how I got in, this sort of thing doesn’t happen to all you… people?
C: Not at all, which is why it’s a bit exciting. You must be something if you were let here. Have any magical relatives? Links to the beyond?
E: Uh, no. Up till a few days ago my life and everything about me has been pretty lame.
Cali stood up and brushed the moss off her skirt. “Sorry to break it to you kid, you’re definitely not lame, you’re something. I’d like to help you figure out what that something is but If you’d rather ignore what you know now I can’t stop you”
Evee stood up with her and looked out to the path into the woods then back at Cali.
“What do you mean I’m something?”
Cali smiled and held out her hand for Evee to take as they walked toward the path.
“This is not a place humans can exist, and seeing as we are both very much in existence, I’d have to bet on you being something more.”
They kept walking into the darkness and Cali began to fade into it. Evee stopped, looking out at nothing in particular, suddenly all the strangeness didn’t feel as strange, the insanity had faded into the dark.
The faint howl of a wolf in the distance called out, it seemed comforting and she closed her eyes, a new hunger for the truth weighed on her heart.
