Through the Haze

The concert had started so the security team were about to move inside when Evee was pulled from a heated Halo v Call of Duty conversation with a very buff light haired bouncer by the sound of screeching tires and a car slamming into another. Evee and the other security guys ran down the length of the building and around the corner into the side alley to find 2 very large men squared up ready to fight 2 other very large men, in front of a Bentley that had been T-boned by a pick-up truck. The alley wasn’t very large, just enough space for 2 cars to pass each other so the wreck was blocking the way completely. Evee’s supervisor, Trey, cautiously walked over calling to them asking if anyone was hurt, they either didn’t hear him, or didn’t care. The 4 men looked heated, so angry they were basically snarling at each other. Trey called out to one of the other security guys without turning his gaze from the tension in the middle of the scene. “Parker, get Evee out of here and call the boss!” Evee looked at him confused “The boss? Shouldn’t we call the cops?” Just as she had finished speaking, a rumbling sound followed by and metallic “BANG” came from the vehicles and the pickup erupted into flames. After the initial burst of heat, one of the men shouted something she couldn’t hear and all hell broke loose. The 4 men dove at each other sending them all to the ground fists flying. Trey and the remaining security guy ran in to attempt to separate the now heated fist fight as the guy next to her tried to usher her back toward the corner to call for help. Evee looked back at the scene, smoke and fire billowed out from the truck behind the mele. Barely visible through the smoke she caught a glimpse of a young girl climbing out of the Bentley. She fell to ground coughing, trying to crawl away from the wreckage. Evee glanced around, no one else saw the girl, the other car was about to blow and these idiots were throwing punches over whose fault it was rather than helping the teenager in danger. She whipped around and began racing toward the girl, dodging the occasional fist and jumping over a guy that had been thrown halfway across the street on his face. When she got to her the girl was unconscious, she kneeled down draping the girl over her shoulders, the flames were getting worse. She hadn’t gone more than ten feet when another “BANG” went off behind them. The Bentley bucked up on the back end and crashed back down erupting into a column of flame throwing Evee to the ground on her face with the girl on top of her. She pushed herself up onto her hands and knees trying to regain balance and lift the girl so they could escape. Struggling to breathe she looked up trying to see the street, the smoke was thick, there was a huge shadow in front of her obscured by the black fog. Hoping it was one of the guys she tried to call out for help but the words caught in her throat as the massive object broke through the smoke wall. Evees eyes widen in shock, she was frozen on her hands and knees staring at something she refused to believe. Though fogged over by the smoke, it was undeniable: as the shadowy blurs fought she could not ignore the fangs claws and tails of massive wolves just feet in front of her. The two massive wolf like creatures were reared up on their hind legs slashing and biting at one another. Evee knelt there for a moment holding her breathe wide eyed watching what she assumed had to be a hallucination when blood splattered across her face from the blow of one of the wolves’ claws across the other’s shoulder. The warm splash on her cheek restarted her pulse and she sprang up with the girl on her back running as fast as she could away from whatever monsters had manifested from the fire. Her breathing became panicked, heart pounding in her chest, she couldn’t breathe. Half way to the corner a wave of dizziness came over her and she and the girl slowly slumped to the ground. She tried to look back at the scene praying that maybe what she saw had been the smoke playing tricks on her eyes, or the lack of oxygen messing with her head. She squinted through the smoky street, an orange glow over everything from the fire. Huge figures moved at one another through the haze, far larger than any normal sized human, the one nearest to her looked to have a long tail and elongated muzzle like face, if it were in her head, the hallucination was very elaborate. She tried to use what strength she had left to get back up, but she couldn’t lift the girl. She stood and bent down to grab her shirt, maybe she could drag her away from this nightmare scene. She only made it a few feet before a shadow came up fast behind her, she ducked and looked ahead. The shadow had come from an enormous silvery gray wolf leaping clean over her and the girl rushing directly into the fiery brawl. It slid to a stop before the crowd and let out a deafening roar. The smoke rushed to either side of the street clearing out the middle taking the wolves with it pinning them to the buildings on each side like they had been pushed by an invisible wall. Everything started to get fuzzy, her vision failing. Whatever was holding the wolves to the buildings released them and they slummed forward, the smoke settling into a haze. The silver wolf had stood up on its back legs and began to blur out of focus, every time she blinked it looked more and more human. It turned and walked closer to her, she had fallen back to the ground, up on her forearms trying to stay awake. He was close enough that she could see it was definitely a man standing in front of her, he started pointing and speaking to someone else but all she could hear was ringing in her ears. She looked up at him as he bent down, kneeling in front of her. He reached out to help her up but she couldn’t move. He turned and shouted something, she watched his salt and pepper hair fall into his face, everything felt like it was in slow motion as he turned back to look at her with serious dark gray eyes saying that she would be ok. He moved quickly to catch her as everything went dark and she fell forward losing consciousness.
