CHAPTER ELEVEN –––––––– HE WATCHED FROM THE back of McNeil’s house. The police had chosen not to use the sirens this time. They wanted to take advantage of the element of surprise. He scoffed. They couldn’t surprise him. DS James got out of the car and headed to the trees where McEwan was lying on the ground. James switched on his flashlight and searched for his colleague. From the other car, a man and a woman got out. They looked around but didn’t see him. The sergeant finally spotted McEwan lying under a tree. He bent and checked his pulse. It was weak, but he could feel it. It was steady enough. He shook him, but McEwan didn’t wake up. James looked at the top of his head. The wound was serious and he needed an ambulance. James dialled 999 and called for one. He stayed with McEwan,
