ANN GODDARD HAD ALREADY been placed in the bag. They had pulled the zipper, covering her face. The coroner had finished his work at the scene and had only to do her autopsy.
He already knew the cause of death — a stab wound in the back. It hit too close to the heart. It was extremely precise. The killer had either experience or confidence. He had probably surprised the woman and that had helped too.
The forensic team sprayed the walls and floor to identify the slightest traces of blood, and determine the exact position of the aggressor. They powdered the door handle and the light switch in the room to draw prints. The wet print of a shoe could be seen on the floorboard behind the door. A technician lifted it carefully and photographed the floor.
