CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO –––––––– BRYONY STEPPED INTO the kitchen and the wave of hostility between Mrs Stevens and McNamara whirled around her. It was so thick that she even stepped back. Suddenly feeling cowardly, she thought of running back to her room. She gathered her courage to step into the kitchen. She avoided her neighbour’s reproachful eyes and, instinctively, she made a beeline towards McNamara, who had already made coffee. He was her only ally despite everything. McNamara offered her a cup of hot and strong coffee without a word, and then, he put one before Mrs Stevens. The old woman was visibly smouldering with anger.
