Chapter3

Maybe I had underestimated the amount of wealth the Lincoln family had. After saying teary goodbyes to my family, a driver pulled up to the house in a Rolls Royce. He said he was now my driver. I didn’t lack anything growing up but I didn’t exactly have access to this much luxury. Lincoln’s estate was big. There was a pool, a stable for his horses, a garden, a court where he played sports and a big garage for his fleet of cars. I held my breath as the butler let me into the house. I am usually a very confident woman, baba always made sure of it ever since I was a little girl. He said he thought I was going to be a boy but when I was born, he knew there was nothing more he could ask for than me. Now, walking into my husband’s home, I felt powerless and empty. His home was bare. Everything was black and white, no other color. No art. No picture frames. No flowers. I hated it. There was so much he could do with this space. It was too reflective of his personality. “Mr Lincoln is out,” the butler said. I later learned his name was Clark. “I’m going to show you to your room,” I nodded. I am a wife now, what am I supposed to do? Mama said I should prepare him dinner and apologize for the lemon cake incident. In her words, the way to a man’s heart was his tummy but I didn’t want to apologize to Lincoln, I wasn’t sorry and I would do it again if I had to. I watched mama cook for baba everyday but she did it with love, they were in love. If Lincoln was hungry, he could hire a chef or make his own meals, I didn’t care if he starved. The butler led me up the stairs, to a room at the end of the hallway. He held open the door and rolled my bags in. “Welcome to your room, Mrs Canon,” he bowed respectfully. I recoiled at being addressed as Mrs Canon. Ewww. As if my life couldn’t get any worse. “Please call me Eloise,” “Okay ma’am,” he nodded. I rolled my eyes, it was definitely going to take him a while to get used to calling me by my name. My room was beyond my imagination. I had expected a dark room just like the house. The sheets were floral, I had a bookshelf, a vanity and a huge window with a reading nook out looking at the estate. I had a walking closet too! It was perfect. It was like a perfect dream that I didn’t want. “Here,” the butler handed me a gold card. “You can buy anything you like. The card has no limits. Mr Canon instructed that you choose any of his cars to help you get around the city,” I stared at the card like it was a foreign object. I’d never seen one like this before. “As you can see, your closet has been stocked up with dresses and shoes. Please let me know if you’d need anything else,” For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak. What was I going to do with all of this wealth? My closet had so many designers, most of their names, I couldn’t even pronounce. A quarter of my father’s debt could be covered by the total cost of the clothes. My shoulders dropped sadly. I didn’t ask for any of this, I didn’t even want them. “Where’s he?” I demanded “Who?” The butler raised a brow. “Lincoln of course,” I was getting irritated, who else did he think I was referring to? “You mean your husband,” he smiled sheepishly. “Well, he’s out handling important business but by evening, the chef would prepare dinner for the both of you,” My fist curled into a ball, the card pressed against my palm. “I’m not interested in the dinner,” I said coldly. Clark didn’t react, his polite smile still remained on his face. “I know you think Mr Canon is horrible but he isn’t. Underneath that act, he is one of the nicest people I’ve met.” I sighed. There was nothing Clark was going to say that would make me feel better. Today was my wedding day as everyone had put it but it was in fact the worst day of my life. I wished the cake incident had infuriated Canon so much that he’d reject the marriage immediately. Mr Clark continued. “I never thought he’d get married after everything that happened but seeing you here is a reminder that even broken hearts can be fixed,” I raised a brow. “After everything that happened?” “You don’t know?” I barely knew anything about the man I was marrying except what the gossip blogs had to say and hearsay. “It’s not my place to say but I’m really glad you’re here,” I folded my arms across my chest. “Let me guess, someone broke his heart?” It was laughable because we both knew Lincoln was the one doing the heart breaking. “No,” Clark answered quickly. Whatever happened to Lincoln was much worse than a heartbreak. For a moment, sadness flickered across Clark’s face. “Why did he do all of these?” I asked, gesturing to the room. The room looked nothing like the rest of the house. It was almost as if someone spent time thinking about what I’d like. “I suppose you’ll have to ask your husband about that,” Before I could press further, he bowed slightly and left. I stood in the middle of the room, suddenly overwhelmed by the silence and my new life.
