Ryder’s POV
I get home from a long arse day at school. After today, I just wanna sleep. I feel exhausted, frustrated and exhausted. I made my way to my room. There’s too many people in the pack house for my liking today. I just can’t be doing with them all. I close my door and lie face first on my bed. My door knocks and Mom walks in.
“Good day in school love?” She says as she sits down by me.
I lean up to look at her.
“Remind me why I had to go back again” I ask with a sigh.
She laughs “you know why love, your father wants you to finish your education before taking over the pack. You are going to be the most amazing, strongest Alpha we’ve seen, but, you're still my boy and my boy will have his qualifications too”
“Fine” I roll my eyes, knowing better than to argue with her.
I wouldn’t win, not because she is tough, but because she is the sweetest mother and Luna you could meet. I would never upset her by being a prick and I know better because she always makes me see sense, even when I don’t want to listen. If I were talking to my dad, that would be a different story! Me and my dad clash more than I care to admit.
“I’ll leave you rest. I will shout when dinner is ready” She stands up to walk out.
“Mom” I call after her ‘can I ask you a question?’
She spins round with a smile. “Yes love?”
“Why are Moonshadow and Sunlit rivals?” I ask.
Her face turns a shade of grey.
“Why are you asking love? Have you had trouble at school?” She asks, concerned.
I laugh. “Most people are too scared to look at me Mom, let alone speak to me or give me trouble”
She rolls her eyes. “You’ve never asked before, why are you now so interested?”
“If you don’t wanna tell me, then just say Mom. Half the people in my school are from Sunlit. I’m just curious, I am making some new friends” I lie.
I don’t need anymore friends, I have enough and I trust them all with my life, but I’m hoping she believes me.
“Come sit by me” she says, tapping the seat on the sofa next to her.
For some reason, the look in her eyes tells me I’m not gonna be happy about the reason. She looks sad. If someone hurt her, I will rip through that pack without even blinking.
“It hasn’t always been this way, we used to be on good ground with Sunlit. We often went over there, and them here. It was bliss. Everyone got on and we knew if we needed allies, we had them, and vice versa. Our Beta Sean, well, his mate Rosemary had a sister. I’m not sure if you remember Lily?” She asks
I shake my head
She continues..
“Lily was part of our pack, she was a loved member of our pack. We all adored her, there was something about her you simply fell in love with, if you knew her or not. We all knew she deserved the world, so when we went for our weekly get-together at Sunlit, a few days after Lily’s 18th birthday, there was no surprise her mate turned out to be Alpha Levi, who was the Alpha before George. Alpha Levi and George were brothers” she says.
I don’t remember there being an Alpha before George.
“Everything was falling into place, Lily moved to Sunlit to be their Luna and, if anything, our packs grew stronger together. I had you and Rosemary had Matt. A few years later, Lily had a pup of her own, a little girl. Lily wanted her daughter to know her family from Moonshadow, so at any opportunity, Rosemary and Lily made arrangements to meet up with their pups. I was also invited with you” tears began to appear in her eyes.
“I don’t remember any of this” I say shocked, “so where are they all now?”
“The visits became less frequent as time went on but everyone seemed happy and settled’, she took a deep breath ‘until that dreaded day we had a message from a runaway of their pack. George slaughtered Alpha Levi, Luna Lily and their daughter in their sleep” she says as tears start rolling down her cheek.
“What the hell? Why would he want to kill his brother? Why the hell would he kill a child?” I say in disbelief.
“George was jealous of Alpha Levi. He was always hoping him and Lily did not have children, so eventually, he would become Alpha when his brother no longer wanted to stay in reign. He was full of relief when they birthed a daughter. He thought that it was still going to eventually put him in charge until, Alpha Levi informed him his daughter would take over his reign when she reached the age of 18, as you can imagine, that didn’t go down very well. Their daughter was only 4, maybe 5 at the time, but she had her mother's spirit. We all knew she would make a great leader one day. She was going to be a true Alpha, a true Luna, but unfortunately she never got the chance. George saw red and a fight broke out between him and Alpha Levi that day. Of course, Alpha Levi wouldn’t exile his only brother, so he let him stay. That night, George was able to sneak into the pack house with a dark witch who cast a spell on the family, so they wouldn’t wake. He slaughtered them all in their beds” She took a breath.
I seriously couldn’t believe everything I was being told. I was 7, how the hell did I not remember any of this?
“It hit us hard, knowing Lily and her daughter had been murdered in cold blood, we set off for war. Rosemary was broken, we all were, we had to avenge Rosemary’s sister and niece, we had to avenge our Lily, she was Moon Shadow blood, we were not gonna let it lie. This is why we are feared by most. We declared war on a pack we always shared mutual ground with, other packs decided if we could do it to Sunlit, we could do it to any other pack that we saw fit. They did not give us a chance to explain and to be honest, son, we didn’t feel like we had to explain ourselves” She looked at me with a sad smile.
“What happened then? Did we go to war?” I ask, needing to know the rest.
“We did. We gave their people a choice first. They leave with us and join the Moonshadow pack or support their new murderous traitor of an Alpha and feel our wrath. Some did choose to leave with us but many stayed. I think they were too afraid of what George would do if they tried to leave. If he could do that to his own flesh and blood, he wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone else who disobeyed him. We lost some warriors that day, they lost more. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get close enough to George to get our revenge. He had his witch by his side, so we didn’t stand a chance. We may have been angry, but we knew trying to kill him was a losing battle, so with heavy hearts we had to retreat. We left. We caused enough damage for George to realise if he ever crossed our path, we would put him down without a second thought. That was 13 years ago and we are still yet to see him. He doesn’t leave his pack grounds. But we swore, from that day on, we would never break bread with a single member of Sunlit as long as we live. So there, you know it all son” she finished.
“I can’t believe it” I say “what was the child’s name?” I ask.
“That is the strangest part, Ryder. No one can seem to remember. It is as if a spell was cast on all who knew her to forget her name, even forget what she looked like. May she rest in peace” mom said.
“s**t Mom, well thank you for telling me. I’ll stay away from Sunlit” I say smiling.
“Thanks love” she says with a smile ‘that means a lot’. She kisses me on the head before walking out of my room.
That settles it, this mate thing is definitely not happening with Ariah! Not now, not ever!
