“What about this one” Zoey is holding a dress up to me.
“I don’t think pink is my colour” I shrug.
It’s Saturday and here I am, at the mall looking for a prom dress.
“Come on Ry, you’ve said that about all of them. At least try some on” she pouts.
“Can I help you?” The retail assistant asks as she walks over to us.
“Yes” Zoey shouts “sort my friend here out with a prom dress. She’s putting her nose up to them all. She’s just being hard work”
“No I am not” I bark at her “pink just isn’t my colour”.
The retail assistant laughs at us “I have to agree, I don’t think pink is her colour. Maybe a navy?” She questions.
“I can work with navy” I smile at her.
“Wait here, I’ll be right back” she wonders off.
“Well I’m going to go with this pink one” Zoey spins in the dress she is currently wearing.
“You should, you look amazing” I beam at her.
She really does look amazing.
“Okay then, I think these 3 would look stunning on you. Would you like to try them on?” The retail assistant is back holding dresses.
I look at Zoey who is giving me the eyes.
“Yes please” I smile awkwardly as she passes me all 3 dresses and ushers me into the changing room.
The first one I try on is a princess style. As beautiful as it is, it just didn’t feel like me. Maybe I am being hard work? The second one was a short, to the knee dress and although, again, it was beautiful, it wasn’t the style I had in mind. The third dress I left till last purposely. It was elegant and absolutely stunning. I loved it on the hanger but I wasn’t sure it would look good on me, so with that fear, I opted to try it last.
I step into the last dress and pull it up, placing my arms through the spaghetti strap for the retail assistant to zip the back. I look in the mirror and gasp. This is my dress. I felt like someone out of a film. I turn to look at the retail assistant as she mirrors my face.
“This is the one” she smiles big “you look stunning”.
It is a navy fishtail maxi dress that elegantly pools along the floor. It has a sweetheart neckline and a low cut back that stops at the top of my bum, leaving my back bare.
“I love it” I beam.
“Let me see already” Zoey shouts from behind the closed door.
I unlock the door and walk out, stepping on the podium in front of the floor to ceiling mirror.
“Oh my word” Zoey gasps “where is my best friend and what have you done with her”
I laugh at her comment.
“Seriously Ry you look amazing. That dress was made for you” she squeals. “You look like a woman” she laughs.
“Thanks” I laugh back at her “what was I before? A man?” I question.
“You know what I mean” she giggles tapping my bum.
After admiring my dress in the mirror for a good 10 minutes, I strip back into my floral, knee length summer dress and go to the till to pay the retail assistant.
“Thank you for your help” I tell her.
“You are more than welcome. You look a million dollars. You ladies off anywhere else today?” She asks.
“Food?” Zoey questions me.
My tummy rumbles. I didn’t realise I was hungry until the word food was mentioned.
“Yeah I could eat” I smile back to her.
“You girls are more than welcome to collect your dresses after you eat if you want? Saves you carrying them around” the lovely lady offers.
“That would be brilliant thank you” I say with a grateful smile. “We will be back shortly”.
We step out of the shop overly happy that we have bought our dresses for the prom and I must admit, it wasn’t as draining as I thought our shopping trip would be.
“Where would you like to eat?” Zoey asks.
“I think we should eat in that bistro” Angie pops into my head.
She hasn’t had much to say today until now, which is unlike her. Usually I can’t get her to shut up.
“How about that bistro?” I ask Zoey pointing across the road to a modern looking bistro.
“Sure” she beams back to me.
We cross the road and head inside. A young man greets us at the door.
“Table for 2 please” I smile at him.
“I’m so sorry ladies but we are full. Our next availability is in 45 minutes if you would like to wait?” He looks apologetic.
“It’s okay. Thank you anyway” I reply before turning around to walk out.
I don’t make it to the door when I freeze still. That amazing aroma of caramel hits me like a tone of bricks.
He’s here!
I am determined I will not turn around and look for him and just walk out, but before I manage to open the door, a hand holds mine.
The sparks bounce up and down my skin like electricity. This feeling is something else, and I never want it to stop.
“Going somewhere?” Ryder’s voice trails at the side of me.
I turn to him “they’re full” is all I say, unable to think of anything better.
“Why don’t you join me and Matt?” He asks.
Before I had chance to answer Zoey pulls me away from him.
“Don’t touch her” she barks “you’ve had your fun, making her life a living hell, it’s over. Everyone may be scared of you but I’m not! Go chose someone else to bully”.
My heart starts pounding. I know Zoey is sticking up for me but, she has just disrespected an Alpha in front of all the diners. I haven’t yet told Zoey Ryder is my mate. As much as I want to, the less people who know right now the better.
“Excuse me” Ryder snaps with a growl in his voice.
“You heard me. Go pick on someone your own size and leave Ariah alone” Zoey shouts at him.
If ever the floor would open up and swallow me whole, this would be the best time.
Ryder laughs which makes me release the breath I did not realise I was holding.
“That was a misunderstanding” Ryder responds to Zoey. “I have apologised to Ariah and we are now friends”
That word friends again, it makes my heart ache.
“Isn’t that right Ariah” Ryder brings all the attention to me.
“Hmm, well, no.. yes. I wouldn’t go as far as friends but we are civil” I look down to the floor.
“Oh right. I’m sorry Alpha” Zoey bears her neck “I didn’t realise”
“It’s fine” Ryder smiles which quickly turns into a death stare “but speak to me like that again, you will wish you’d never been born” he warns Zoey.
“Yes Alpha” she replies.
“So, would you like to join Matt and me” Ryder is now looking at me.
“No it’s fine we will go somewhere else” I try to open the door again but he grabs my arm bringing all the warmth and sparks flying back through my body.
“I insist’”he is now pulling me to the table that sits Matt, well Zoey follows behind.
This is not something I wanted to be doing today, having lunch with the Alpha.
Again ground, open up and swallow me, I beg you!
