Chapter 2

1069 Words
Everyone says I must have gotten kicked in the head by a donkey. This guy is clearly just a gold digger. They warn I'd better watch out so he doesn't swindle all my money. But what can I say? I'm a total sucker for good looks. Compared to my chubby, patronizing, mansplaining ex-husband who always acted like he knew everything, Von, this young, gorgeous guy, completely swept me off my feet. Plus, Von is so obedient, he's perfect at giving exactly the emotional support I need. Whatever I say goes, no questions asked. If I'm in a bad mood, even if I tell him to kneel by the bed all night to apologize, he does it perfectly without a single complaint. It makes me feel like a queen straight out of a novel. So damn satisfying. As for him scamming me out of money? Not a chance in hell. I didn't claw my way up to this position by being a pushover. The most Von can squeeze out of me is some pocket change. He'll never get within a mile of the real fortune. I love hot young guys, but compared to money? Men don't mean jack s**t. That's my whole moral code. In money, we trust. Marrying Von? It's just me paying to keep myself in a good mood. On top of that, he's actually useful. He handles every little annoying chore in both my work and personal life flawlessly. He has a million reasons to respect me. After all, I pulled him out of the gutter in every possible way. The biggest reason of all? I treat his adopted daughter like she's my own flesh and blood. I cover all her medical bills, and I've even been arranging to send her to study abroad recently. That's why when I saw that video, I felt both sick to my stomach and completely stunned. 'Ugh, this is such a mess.' I haven't felt this frustrated in years. There was a small utility knife sitting on my desk. I picked it up, my face twisted in a frown. "Ms. Jordan! There are plenty of men out there. Don't do anything stupid!" My secretary clamped down on my wrist as hard as she could. Chloe the secretary was as delicate as a little flower. How was she ever gonna hold me back? I tugged my arm lightly, and I broke free immediately. Amid her shrill scream, I lifted the knife, brought it down in one sharp motion, and sliced hard… Right through the price tag hanging off Chloe's skirt. "Chloe, how many times have I told you to pay attention to your appearance? You're such a pretty girl, and you didn't even check this before heading out? If anyone sees this, they'll think I don't pay my staff enough, and you're planning to wear the dress once, then return it!" "Huh? I thought you were gonna…" Chloe's scream died midair. But it was too late. There was a noise at the door. Chloe and I turned to look at the same time, and a whole crowd of people was standing there packed shoulder to shoulder. Every single one of them had teary eyes, looking like they were seconds away from bursting into tears. "President Jordan! You scared us half to death!" Mr. Fabian, a junior staff member from the engineering department. He'd hurt his leg in an accident and was left with a permanent disability that made every other company turn him away. I hired him. Now he does the work of an entire department all by himself, and he volunteers to work overtime whenever it's needed. Ms. Wallace, our product manager. She's an exclusive university master's graduate, but her ex-husband tricked her into quitting her job to be a full-time housewife. When they divorced, he left her with absolutely nothing, and I saved her right when she was about to jump into the river to kill herself. Now she brings in hundreds of thousands in revenue every single month all on her own. Stacey, our streamer. She's a girl from a remote mountain town that I sponsored through college. She worked her way all the way from her tiny hometown to this big city, and ever since she joined my team, she's been pulling in tens of millions in GMV every day. Then there's Mr. Corpuz, Mr. Brooks, Prince… all long-time employees who I've helped out when they were at their lowest. They rushed over and wrapped me up in a group hug. "That son of a b***h! I'll gouge that bastard's eyes out for what he did." "I'm sorry, President Jordan! I've already put the backend team on urgent priority to block the content across the entire internet, but I haven't finished yet..." "Ms. Jordan, a breakup is never worth breaking your heart over!" I was genuinely touched by how much they cared, but hold on a second... 'Breakup? Heartbreak?' Did all these people actually think I was heartbroken over Von cheating on me? Did they really see me as that much of a fool? Oh, that actually ticked me off. I would never get this upset over some man. The reason I was frustrated? Those two lowlifes had just messed with my far more important plans! "Nobody leaves work today. We're holding an emergency meeting, and every single department has to be there." I pushed my way through the crowd, my high heels clicking sharply against the floor as I strode forward. "Quick heads up, overtime pay is doubled for all of you." I glanced down at my phone, where 26 missed calls from Von and Noemie stared back at me. Irritation flared in my chest, and I powered the device off straight away. I don't have time to deal with that messy domestic drama right now. Our subsidiary was set to go public in two weeks. For this kind of mess to blow up right at this critical juncture, the impact would be absolutely terrible. We had to launch an emergency PR response immediately. Besides, the whole thing was super fishy. Forget whatever messed up relationship those two had for a second. Even if there was something going on between them, Von was way too meticulous and careful to flaunt it out in the open right now. 'So someone was trying to take me down, huh?' 'Okay, sure. Your girl is more than happy to play along.'
