Chapter 8: The First Eclipse Awakens

Darkness had a sound. Isadora learned that as she fell. Not silence. Not peace. A deep, endless whisper surrounding her from every direction. Voices. Thousands of them. Some crying. Some screaming. Some calling her name. She tried to move, but her body felt weightless. She could not feel the ground beneath her. She could not feel the cold mountain air. Only the strange pull of something ancient. Then she heard it again. The voice from the sanctuary. “Isadora.” Her eyes opened. She was standing somewhere unfamiliar. A vast field stretched around her, covered in silver grass that moved without wind. Above her was a sky filled with stars, brighter than anything she had ever seen. She looked down at herself. She was alone. “Where am I?” Her voice echoed. A figure appeared in the distance. A woman. The same woman from the sanctuary. Her mother. Isadora froze. “You’re real.” The woman smiled sadly. “Yes.” Isadora stared at her. She wanted to run toward her. She wanted to ask a thousand questions. But anger stopped her. “You left me.” The woman lowered her eyes. “I know.” “You let me grow up thinking something was wrong with me.” “I know.” “You let people treat me like I was broken.” Pain crossed the woman’s face. “I know.” The agreement made Isadora even angrier. She expected excuses. She expected explanations. Not acceptance. “Then why?” The woman looked at the silver field around them. “Because I was trying to keep you alive.” Isadora shook her head. “Everyone says that.” “I know.” “You all use the same words.” Her voice broke slightly. “But none of you ask what it felt like.” The woman stepped closer. “You are right.” That surprised Isadora. “You are angry because you should be.” A tear formed in the woman’s eyes. “You deserved a mother who held your hand. You deserved answers. You deserved a life without fear.” Isadora looked away. For the first time, someone admitted what she had lost. “I thought I was defective.” Her voice became quieter. “I thought my own wolf rejected me.” The woman approached slowly. “Your wolf was never silent because you were weak.” She touched Isadora’s face. “She was silent because she was waiting for you to become strong enough to carry her.” The silver field around them changed. Images appeared. A young Isadora. A baby wrapped in a blanket. Her mother running through a forest while being chased. Her father fighting against wolves. A desperate escape. “I was hunted,” her mother explained. “The Eclipse bloodline was disappearing because powerful families feared what we could do.” Isadora watched the vision. “Why did they fear us?” “Because we could see the truth.” The image changed. Werewolves kneeling before Eclipse Wolves. Not because they were forced. Because they respected them. “We could sense corruption. We could break unnatural magic. We could stop those who used power to control others.” Her mother looked at her. “And that terrified anyone who built their world on lies.” Isadora understood. The Eclipse Wolves were not dangerous because they wanted power. They were dangerous because they could expose people who abused it. A sudden image appeared. Caetano. Standing alone in the burning sanctuary. Fighting Alvaro. Isadora’s heart tightened. “He is in danger.” Her mother looked at the vision. “Yes.” “Then let me go.” “You cannot.” Isadora turned. “What?” “You are not ready.” Anger flashed in her eyes. “I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.” Her mother smiled sadly. “That is exactly why you are ready.” The words confused her. “You think being angry makes me ready?” “No.” Her mother touched her chest. “Choosing yourself makes you ready.” The vision of Caetano changed. He was on his knees. His wolf fighting against something dark. Isadora felt fear. Not for herself. For him. “I have to help him.” Her mother watched her carefully. “You still love him.” Isadora looked away. “I don’t know.” It was the most honest answer she had. Her mother smiled. “Good.” “Good?” “Yes.” She stepped closer. “Because love that survives pain is stronger than love that never faced it.” The silver light around them began fading. Isadora felt herself being pulled away. “Wait.” Her mother held her hand. “One more thing.” “What?” The woman’s expression became serious. “The person you should fear is not Alvaro.” Isadora froze. “Then who?” Her mother looked toward the darkness behind her. “The person who created him.” The world shattered. Isadora woke up violently. She gasped for air. The sanctuary ceiling was above her. Smoke filled the room. Stone pieces covered the ground. She immediately sat up. “Caetano.” A voice answered. “I’m here.” She turned. Caetano was beside her. His clothes were torn. Blood covered his shoulder. But he was alive. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Isadora noticed something. The bond. It felt different. Stronger. Calmer. Like something inside both of them had changed. “You came back.” The words escaped before she could stop them. Caetano looked at her. “Of course I did.” Something in his voice made her chest tighten. Before she could respond, a loud crash came from the other side of the sanctuary. They both turned. Alvaro stood there. But he was different. Dark veins covered his skin. His eyes were no longer completely human. The corruption had taken over. “You finally awakened.” Isadora stood slowly. “I know what you are trying to do.” Alvaro smiled. “No.” He looked at Caetano. “You know what I started.” Caetano stepped forward. “You corrupted yourself.” Alvaro laughed. “Did I?” The dark energy around him grew. “Your ancestors spent centuries trying to control Eclipse power.” His eyes moved to Isadora. “I simply found a better way.” Isadora felt the ground shake. “What better way?” Alvaro smiled. “To become what I was always meant to be.” The darkness around him transformed. A wolf. But not like any wolf they had seen. A creature created from stolen Eclipse energy. Caetano moved beside Isadora. For once, he did not stand in front of her. He stood beside her. A small but important difference. Alvaro noticed. “How touching.” He looked between them. “The Alpha and the Eclipse finally standing together.” His smile disappeared. “But you still don’t understand.” The sanctuary walls began collapsing. “The first Eclipse is not your mother.” Isadora froze. “What?” Alvaro’s eyes locked onto hers. “The first Eclipse is inside you.” The world stopped. The mark on Isadora’s skin burned. And from somewhere deep within her, another voice awakened. A voice that sounded exactly like her own. “He is lying.” Isadora’s breath caught. Because now there were two voices inside her. One that belonged to her wolf. And one that belonged to something much older.
