Chapter 1

'Beautiful' is the perfect word that came to my mind as I took in the sun setting on the Gulf of Mexico. This had become a daily ritual of mine to clear my head for the following day. I love it here in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. I love the salty air and the sand beneath my toes. I could stay here forever but my mother will not be happy if I am late for dinner again.      She already hated the fact that I would come here alone but dad convinced her that I was 17 and could handle myself. Not to mention we had pack members everywhere in case there was trouble. I guess that's the nice thing about growing up in the same place your whole life. You know pretty much everyone. Everything is familiar and unchanging which is something I crave. I've always found comfort in daily routines.      My little sisters on the other hand wouldn't mind a change, the little firecrackers. I adore them though and wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. I was so happy when my parents told me I would finally have a sibling at 9 years old. I never expected three sisters all bright and full of energy. The first one to arrive was Elizabeth. Three years later came Chloe and 3 more years passed and out came Olivia the feistiest one of them all and smart as a whip. My poor dad is outnumbered but he doesn't seem to mind one bit. He loves all of the energy in the house. It's hard to escape considering they are all pups, except for me that is.      The day I was born, my parents and the pack were completely mystified when I came out human. I was checked by multiple pack doctors but no one could explain why I had no wolf. No one treated me different though and I was so grateful for that. It still bothers me that I can't shift like my fellow pack members and friends but I have learned to accept it. I just hope that I still have a mate out there somewhere and that they will feel the pull towards me since I have no wolf to guide me. That is my greatest fear. I don't want to be the only one watching as all my friends gradually find there mates while I'm left alone. I could always find someone the regular way but I wanted that special bond with someone. I NEEDED to have that connection.     Snapping myself out of my thoughts I realized I was already late. s**t. I put on my sandals, grabbed my bike and raced home. As soon as I came through the door I was greeted by my mother with "the look". Great here it comes.      "What have I told you repeatedly Lydia Grove" my mother snapped.      "I know I know, I'm so sorry. I'm serious this time, I really didn't mean to lose track of time. The sunset was just so perfect." I confessed.      "Give her a break Alice. Let her enjoy her last week of summer." my dad stepped in. I love it when he takes up for me. He knows I have only a few days left to enjoy before senior year studies take over.      My mom just shook her head and sat down at the table.      My sisters were all giggling except little Olivia who loudly announced "Liddy momma spank your butt!" We all burst out laughing except my mom who just smirked.      "All right that's enough. Let's give thanks to the Goddess for this meal" my dad said.      After dinner I helped my mom clean up the kitchen and get my sisters ready for bed. I loved helping with them. They were quite a handful but they looked up to me and needed my attention.      After they were all tucked in I gave my parents both a hug before going to bed.      As I'm leaving the living room I hear my dad's phone ring. That's odd at this hour. It's only 8pm but no one usually calls him. I decide that it's none of my business and I'll just ask in the morning.      I changed into some lounge shorts and a baggy t-shirt. I went over to the mirror hanging on my closet door and let down my hair. It was braided and pulled up into a bun. I let it loose and it fell down to my ankles.      I don't understand why my mom won't let me cut it. The length is getting ridiculous. Maybe I can bring it up as a graduation gift. Isn't that sad. While normal students are asking for cars, I'm asking for a simple haircut. Well a very short haircut but still it's not like I'm asking to tattoo my face.      I did love my hair color though. It was auburn with natural gold highlights throughout thanks to my days at the beach. My skin developed a nice tan over the summer otherwise I would be quite pale. My tan also made my dark green eyes stand out which I really liked.      I can't wait to start senior year like this. This year I finally don't look so lanky and awkward. I've been working out over the summer and developed some tone. I didn't look so weak and tiny compared to my friends who have already shifted and are so muscular lately. I might only be human but I want to be able to hold my own.      After spending what felt like forever brushing out my hair I crawled into bed and drifted off to sleep, my dad's phone call in the back of my mind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~     "WAKE UP!" my mother whisper yelled shaking me vigorously. I snapped my eyes open to see my horrified mother.      "What's wrong?!" I said panicking.      "Shhhh! We need to wake up your sisters and you need to leave now!" she said quickly.      "What?! Mom what is going on?" I whispered.      She didn't answer me and grabbed my arm running to my sisters room.      Completely shaking all over, I wake little Olivia up who started to cry out when I put my hand over her mouth.      "Olivia I saw fairies! If you want to see them you have to come with me and be very quiet." I whispered. Olivia stared at me in silence now wide awake.I wasn't sure what was going on but I knew I had to come up with something and that was all I could think of on the spot.      My two other sisters heard me and their eyes widened. My mother gave me a sad smile and mouthed "thank you".      She led us into the laundry room and pulled up the rug. There you could see part of the floor had been torn up revealing a door. My heart dropped.      Did they know something was going to happen before we even moved here? Why didn't they say anything to me.      My mother opened the door and told me to climb down the ladder while handing my sisters to me one by one.      "You need to go through that door behind you and run as fast as you can. Someone will be waiting for you at the end. I love you sweetheart." my mom whispered quickly with tears in her eyes before handing me a flashlight and closing the door.      All of a sudden there was a BANG and everything shook just a little. My sisters started to scream before I shushed them.      I turned on the flashlight "Okay we have to go find the fairies but we have to hurry."      They all nodded and started running. I scooped up Olivia and shut the large metal door. It locked instantly.      This is crazy, what are we going to do. What was that noise? Oh my gosh what about my parents?! My thoughts were racing as we ran down the tunnel. I tried to keep the fear off of my face for the sake of my sisters.      We ran for what seemed like an hour when in reality it was probably only 20 minutes.      A door appeared in the distance. Oh thank god! I put Olivia down and opened the door.      My poor little girls were bent over out of breath. We stepped through the door and were met by a fresh breeze. It was very dark and I could hear crickets chirping and frogs croaking nearby. Where the heck are we?      We walked through the bushes in front of us when a bright light shone in our faces.      "Lydia Grove?" a woman appeared.      "Uh y-yes." I replied shakily.      "Please get in immediately" she gestured towards a black vehicle with a man standing by the door and another man sitting up front. They were all dressed in suits.      Okay someone seriously needs to tell me what is happening.      We all climbed into the car as my sisters now started getting upset and confused.      "Where are the fairies?" Chloe asked her voice cracking. My heart broke.      The woman got in and sat in front of me. I've never seen a car with seats like this. There were six seats in total in the back seat. Three facing the front and three facing the back. The girls sat on either side of me with the littlest in my lap.      "Um, excuse me but what on earth is going on?" I finally spoke up after a few minutes.      The woman looked at me for a moment before saying something I will never forget.      "You and your sisters are moving to another state and pack."
