CHAPTER 14:

5000 Words
The light cleared Estelle's eyes, bringing her back to reality after being lost in the shadows of the past. With a heart full of complicated emotions, she noticed someone holding her hand, looking at her with an upset expression full of worry. Despite the situation, she felt a bit of happiness upon realizing who it was. It was Nolan, in an awful state—his eyes showed signs of exhaustion as if he hadn’t slept at all, and his face revealed that he had waited a long time without resting. Overwhelmed with emotion, she spoke his name in a cracked, pained voice. Estelle: Nolan... Nolan froze in place, surprised, and then his expression softened, tears of happiness and joy filling his eyes. Unable to speak, he kissed her hand. As he quickly turned to get the nurse and doctor to check on her, she stopped him by holding his hand and spoke in a soft, low voice. Estelle: Don't go... He calmed himself, showing a beautiful smile, as if to tell her to relax and that he wouldn’t leave her side. Her eyes also filled with tears. Nolan grabbed a handkerchief and gently wiped them away, speaking in a warm, concerned voice. Nolan: Don’t cry. I’m not going anywhere. How do you feel right now? Estelle, still crying, responded: What about you? I’m really happy I managed to save you! Nolan kept smiling, his voice soft: Silly, who's the one lying in the hospital bed? How can you ask about me even after being shot for my sake? I should be the one thanking you. Estelle, in pain and with a cracked voice: I don’t know... I was worried you might leave and disappear! Nolan, reassuringly: Don’t worry, I won’t even move from here. I’ll just call Lisa and Simon to inform the doctors and have them check on you. Estelle watched as Nolan made the call to share the news, then called out to him in an unstable, confused voice. Estelle: Nolan... Estelle is lost in her thoughts while telling Nolan: I had a long dream about my past, It was about my memories with Lucas but all of sudden you appeared calling for me to wake up! Nolan was frustrated by Estelle's words then turned to her changing the topic, worrying in his deep voice: What’s wrong? You keep calling me "Nolan." What about "Nol"? Am I not your stepbrother anymore? Estelle lost in her thoughts, didn’t realize she couldn’t answer his question. Nolan continued speaking, his expression serious and eyes pained. Nolan: Don’t ever try something like this again. If you even think about it, I will disappear and never come back—to keep you safe. Nolan, looking upset: I can’t forgive myself for you getting hurt because of my problems. Estelle, with a sad, pained expression: It’s not your fault... Their conversation was suddenly interrupted by Lisa, Simon, and the doctors. Lisa hurried to Estelle’s side, holding her hand, her eyes filled with tears, while Simon smiled happily. Lisa, in tears and with a cracked voice: I thought you would never wake up, Estelle! Lisa, full of concern: How do you feel? Do we need to adjust your pain medication? Can you see clearly? Do you know who I am? Is there any specific sensation in your body that you want to describe? Estelle pressed Lisa’s hand, reassuring her with a smile: I’m fine, Lisa. Chill out! Lisa relieved: I’m so glad, Estelle! Your father and Layla are on their way here. Nolan’s expression changed upon hearing Layla’s name. He told Estelle that he was going to the restroom for a few minutes and would be back soon. Estelle grasped the situation, and then everyone—Kevin, Zack, and a woman named Aubrey, who is Zack’s sister and also a high-ranking officer from a nearby town—came to check on her. Aubrey, with her dark hair, dark eyes, and tanned skin, was a strikingly beautiful girl. After that, Layla, Michael, and Bob arrived in a rush. Everyone else left to give them some privacy. Layla placed her hands on Estelle’s cheeks and burst into tears: I’m sorry, sweetheart. You’ve suffered so much, and because of me, you had to endure all this! Estelle smiled, placing her hand on Layla’s: No way, Layla. You did nothing wrong, and I’m okay now, so don’t blame yourself. Michael placed his hand on Estelle’s head, smiling gently: You made us worry so much, Estelle. I’m happy you’re okay! Estelle smiled through her tears, then noticed her grandpa standing in the corner, so she called out to him. Estelle: Grandpa! Bob responded coldly: I can't speak with you as long as the person responsible for your accident is still here! Estelle gave him a serious look: No one is responsible! Don’t blame anyone, but I do have to remind you that this is related to Jeremiah. Bob, shocked: What? Oh my dear, I’m sorry to bring up such a terrible thing. Bob kissed Estelle on the forehead, and after sharing an emotional moment, everyone left to let her rest. Nolan returned with Lisa and Simon. Lisa, still concerned, checked on Estelle again: Are you sure you don’t need anything? Estelle, tiredly: Lisa, I’m fine. Can’t you see that? Simon, smiling gently: I’m glad you’re okay, Estelle. Lisa, shouldn’t we head home? Lisa, annoyed, ignored him: I’m not coming. You can leave on your own. Nolan and Estelle were surprised by Lisa’s response. Simon, in a gentle tone, left, saying she could stay if she wanted. Estelle noticed Lisa’s expression. Estelle, curiously: Are you okay? Why aren’t you leaving with your husband? Lisa, arrogantly: He can leave on his own. I’m staying with my bestie to take care of her. Estelle, tired and in pain: What happened between you two? Did you fight? Lisa, sarcastically: Nothing serious, but it was his fault. Aren’t you sick? And Nolan hasn’t slept in four days! He’ll end up dying, so I decided to take care of you! Nolan, annoyed at Lisa: I don’t mind staying up another night, you know! Lisa, angrily adjusted her hair: Didn’t I give you some time? You need to rest and change into clean clothes—you smell bad! Can’t you leave us girls alone for a second? Estelle looked at Nolan, her eyes silently asking him to leave them alone for a moment. Nolan took a deep breath and stepped outside. Estelle, taking a deep breath, tired: Now that Nolan’s gone, can you finally explain what happened between you and Simon? Lisa, in a troubled voice: He got jealous! How could he be jealous of another man and accuse me of being too nice to him? Estelle, surprised: Is that so? Don’t you like it when your husband gets jealous of you? Lisa, confidently: Of course, I love it. But he said I was treating Kevin too well and that Kevin was interested in me. Lisa, sarcastically: Isn’t that ridiculous? Just because I told Kevin he’s not useless, Simon got angry at me! Estelle, confused: Kevin? Are interested in you? Maybe, as a man, Simon sensed something and that’s why he wants you to stop being so nice to Kevin. Lisa, sarcastically: No way! Simon knows my heart belongs to him, and now he is pressing my nerves! How stupid of him! Estelle, tiredly: You should go home and reconcile with him. This isn’t something worth arguing about. And isn’t he leaving for the trip? Lisa, rolling her eyes: He’s leaving tomorrow. Estelle, raising her voice in pain: Go home and patch things up with him! Don’t stay here and stress me out—I’ll have a heart attack if you keep this up! Go take care of your husband! Nolan came back with new clothes and in more proper demeanour holding coffee in his hands, he noticed Estelle's annoyingness on Lisa and hurried to her Nolan annoyed: Lisa look at Estelle, she's not in a stable state! Why have you made her like that Lisa felt guilty and lowered her head. “I’m sorry, Estelle, for bothering you with my problems. You should rest. Don’t push yourself too hard. I’ll leave now. Nolan, please take care of her.” After that, she rushed to the door, waving at Estelle with concern. Nolan, in a worried tone: “Estelle, are you okay?” Estelle tiredly met Nolan's gaze. “Stop asking about my condition! I’m sick of it. I know I’m injured, but this is too much.” Nolan patted her head gently, trying to reassure her. “Alright, just stay calm. You’ll only hurt yourself more if you stress.” With a concerned tone, Estelle looked deeply into Nolan’s eyes. “Nolan, what about your relationship with your mother?” Nolan ignored her question, changing the subject as he started checking her temperature. “Do you have a fever?” Estelle, with a serious expression: “Don’t dodge the question. She did nothing wrong, so don’t blame her. You haven’t even heard her side of the story. At least try to find a reason to forgive her.” Nolan remained silent as Estelle continued with a determined look and warm tone. Estelle: “She’s the one who raised you and shaped you into a good person. Sometimes, I envy you for having her as your mother. You know, her kindness and the way she treats me make me like her more and more.” Nolan moved closer to Estelle, looking at her with determined eyes. “Please stop, or I might do something I’ll regret.” Estelle, frustrated, continued looking at him. “What would you regret? Just because I’m telling the truth?” Nolan, now angry, stared into her eyes and raised his voice without realizing it. “I said stop it! Do you even know how hard I’m trying to control my feelings lately? Don’t complicate things more, please.” Estelle, still frustrated: “Why? What’s your reason?” Nolan, his anger growing, shouted: “Because of you! You’ve made me feel like I’m losing my mind!” Estelle froze, speechless, as the heart rate monitor Lisa had placed started beeping rapidly, her heart racing. Nolan noticed the monitor in panic. “What’s wrong? Should I call a doctor? Your heart rate is going up—you must have a fever or low temperature!” Estelle grabbed his hand to stop him, trying to calm him down. “I’m fine! I’ll be okay after drinking some water.” Nolan, still concerned and panicked: “What do you mean? You might be in danger—we should call a doctor!” Estelle, embarrassed, squeezed his hand and raised her voice slightly. “It’s not dangerous. My heart just raced after hearing your words.” Nolan was stunned by her confession and froze for a moment. He then handed her a glass of water, which she quickly drank and returned to him. Nolan, stumbling over his words: “I’m going to get some fresh air. I’ll be back in a minute.” Estelle, feeling awkward, adjusted her hair and responded, “I need some fresh air too.” Nolan, regaining his usual demeanor, smiled at her. “I think I have an idea. Just wait for me for a second!” Estelle watched curiously as Nolan hurried out of the room. She lay there waiting until he returned, looking excited. Estelle, tired: “I thought you weren’t coming back.” He handed her a blanket and a jacket. Nolan, reassuringly: “Put this on.” Estelle put on the jacket and wrapped herself in the blanket. Nolan, looking a bit unsure: “I want to do something, but you might not like it. They wouldn’t give me a wheelchair because your loyal friend didn’t allow it, so I’ll try something else. I’m sorry.” Estelle, surprised: “What do you mean?” Nolan got closer to Estelle and gently lifted her as if she were a princess, but she began shouting and scolding him, claiming he had lost his mind! Estelle, in fear: "I’m going to fall! You know I’m injured; I should be in bed. Don’t—don’t—aaaahhhhhh!" Nolan looked deeply into Estelle's eyes with a serious expression: "If you trust me, hold on tighter. You can close your eyes or keep looking at me. I won’t let you fall." Estelle fixed her gaze on Nolan as he carried her, walking steadily. It was as if she were hypnotized; she didn’t look away until they arrived at the roof. There were small glowing lamps, a bed for patients, and dinner set on a small table. Estelle was astounded by the beautiful view as she gazed up at the star-filled sky. Nolan gently placed her on the bed and adjusted the pillows to make her comfortable. Estelle smiled happily: "Thank you, Nolan. This is beautiful." With a curious expression, Estelle asked: "But how did you manage to prepare all of this?" Nolan shrugged with a smile: "I got a little help from the nurses and the hospital crew. Since they know Lisa and Simon, they were happy to assist me. Even the food was made by the nurses following Lisa’s instructions, of course." Estelle, showing a bright smile: "I don’t know how you come up with such great ideas. You surprise me every time." She suddenly remembered something and asked Nolan about it: "I completely forgot about Steven. He helped us a lot, but I haven’t seen him. Is he really busy?" Nolan, annoyed: "Is Steven really our topic right now? Why did you have to remind me of him?" Estelle shrugged and replied calmly: "I’m just grateful for his help, and nobody seems worried about him. That’s all." Nolan took a deep breath, then put on a reassuring face: "Well, he felt guilty for not shooting that man before he harmed you, and he couldn’t face you because of it. So, he buried himself in his work. But he’s fine." Estelle, concerned: "Why would he feel guilty about that? He did his best!" Nolan, with a sad expression: "If he feels guilty, I feel responsible too. Even though I tried, I couldn’t stay away from you, and all I did was hurt you." Estelle held Nolan’s hand and gave him a comforting look: "Please, don’t think like that." Nolan, with an upset expression, looked at Estelle: "Can I borrow your shoulder for a few moments, please?" Estelle nodded, and Nolan rested his head on her shoulder, repeatedly saying, "I’m sorry," as tears fell from his eyes. Estelle gently placed her hand on his head and began to caress his hair for comfort, speaking in a deep, soothing voice: Estelle: "It’s okay. It’s okay." After several minutes, Nolan returned to his normal state. Estelle placed her hand on his cheek and gently asked how he was feeling. He looked at her deeply and asked her not to look at him that way. To change the subject, he asked about dinner and began feeding her smoothly. Feeling embarrassed, Estelle spoke up: Estelle: "I feel like a baby being fed by her mother." Nolan, smiling sarcastically: "You should feel that way—I am your stepbrother, after all!" Estelle smiled back at him in a calm tone: "Yes, you are." Afterward, Estelle lay back on the bed in relief and began gazing at the stars, while Nolan sat nearby, just watching her. Estelle, concerned, asked Nolan: "You don't look relaxed like that! Why don't you lie down next to me? There’s a small space here." Nolan, with a warm, interested look: "You should keep the bed for yourself. I’m fine; you’re the one who’s sick." Feeling nervous, Estelle pushed Nolan toward her, annoyed. By accident, Nolan placed his hands on the bed to avoid crashing into her, and their eyes met again. The awkwardness between them was palpable. Then, Nolan lay down next to her, pointing at the sky uneasily. Nolan: "Look at that bright star—it’s so big and shiny." Estelle, agreeing uneasily: "Yes, it’s an unusual one." They continued discussing the stars and the sky until the end of the night, when Estelle, exhausted, fell asleep. Nolan, lying next to her, looked at her and whispered in a deep, tender voice: Nolan: "How can I not lose you, Estelle? I keep making the same mistakes." At that moment, he gently carried her back to her room. The night ended peacefully. The Next Morning at the Hospital The sun filtered gently through the curtains in Estelle's room. Both Estelle and Nolan were still asleep when Lisa arrived early, her footsteps light as she entered the room. She looked over at the pair with a fond smile before settling into a chair nearby. Despite her initial attempt to stay quiet, she couldn’t help but start complaining. Lisa sighed, "Simon left so early this morning... I’m going to miss him so much! And he has that special banquet tonight—he mentioned a lot of women would be there. Ugh, I can’t stand the thought." Estelle, still exhausted but slowly waking up, groggily asked, "Did you make up with him?" Lisa nodded, her voice a bit more cheerful. "Yes, we did. But now I’m just worried all over again!" Nolan, who had been sleeping on the sofa, stirred at the sound of their conversation. He opened his eyes, surprised by Lisa’s energy so early in the morning. Lisa caught the look on Nolan's face and tilted her head, realising there was something different between the two of them. She leaned closer, whispering, "Is there something going on between you two?" Nolan, annoyed by the question, quickly dismissed it. "There’s nothing," he muttered, avoiding eye contact. Just then, Layla arrived, her arms full of boxes filled with food she had prepared for Estelle—and for Nolan as well. She entered the room, her eyes immediately seeking out Estelle. Layla asked softly, "How’s Estelle doing?" Nolan ignored her question, his focus solely on Estelle. He leaned down and whispered to her, "I’ll be back in a bit." With that, Nolan got up and left the room, not even glancing in Layla’s direction as he passed by. Layla's expression fell, a hint of sadness flickering across her face. Lisa, sensing the tension, quickly excused herself and followed Nolan out, leaving Layla and Estelle alone in the room. Once they were gone, the room fell into an awkward silence. Estelle noticed Layla’s downcast expression and knew that something was weighing heavily on her mind. Layla in a wistful tone: "I think he won't ever speak to me again." Estelle comforted Layla, patting her hand: "I don't think so. He just needs some time." Layla looked at Estelle wistfully: "Even you should be angry with me. I bet I’m not the righteous person in your eyes anymore." Estelle reassured Layla with a smile: "I'm sure the kindness I received from you isn't fake, and I can't judge you without hearing your side of the story." Estelle wondered: "Does my father know your story?" Layla in a tender tone: "Yes, and he supported me." Estelle, surprised, smiled: "Well, I’m stunned. I never imagined Michael Jefferson supporting someone like that after hearing their story. I guess he truly cares for you! I’m happy he did the right thing." Layla caressed Estelle's cheek: "I’m the lucky one to have such a beautiful family." Layla looked at the floor with deep eyes and a wistful voice: "The true version of the story is as you heard. I loved Astrid and was hoping to build a family with him, but he got married and left me pregnant. I was poor and struggling to live, working day and night, but I couldn’t keep the baby. I lost my baby after I lost consciousness at work. When my father found out, he kicked me out of the house. That day, I met Nolan's father. After I shared my story with him—without mentioning his brother's name—he offered me his hand and said he didn’t care about my past. He wanted to get married for his mother’s sake and promised to build the family I always dreamed of. But then I found out he was Astrid's brother. I was terrified he would leave me, and I’d be on the streets again. I was only nineteen, so I kept it a secret. I know it’s shocking, but Astrid, who was twenty-four at the time, promised to marry me after I finished high school. Nolan's father was younger but more mature. "After that, it was Nolan’s birthday and Oliver—Nolan's father—announced our engagement. We rented an apartment a week later. Even though Astrid had stayed quiet all that time, one day, he got drunk and, in a fit of rage, broke into my house, shouting and breaking everything. I was focused on protecting Nolan, but Astrid attacked me, demanding to know why I gave up on him and accusing me of giving birth to his brother's child. Then he started making inappropriate advances. I was screaming, and Oliver came back just in time. He saw Astrid and started yelling at him. Astrid told him I was his ex-girlfriend. Oliver lost his mind and demanded that he stay away from us, and then he hit him with a metal bowl!" Estelle in shock: "But didn't he defend you? Why did he stay in jail for so long? And why didn’t you testify for him after all he did for you?" Layla took a deep breath and then looked back at Estelle with a guilty expression: "It was my fault. After Oliver went to jail, I was dismissed from our home, and their mother didn’t want to accept me. They wanted to take Nolan from me. I begged her to let me stay with him. Out of guilt, I worked in their house as a servant. I went to visit Oliver, but he refused to speak with me. His mother was so attached to Nolan since she had lost both of her sons, but she didn’t care about us after she heard about Astrid's wife being pregnant with twins just a week after her husband died. She was determined to put all of Astrid's sins and debts on Oliver to keep her coming grandchildren close. She completely ignored me and Nolan. Layla continued speaking with tears in her eyes: "When I tried to testify for my husband and reveal the truth, she threatened to take custody of Nolan. I was terrified of losing my child. That day, I sent my qualifications to an event planning company, offering them whatever I could. They accepted me as a trainee with a low salary. I visited Oliver again, this time taking Nolan with me. He agreed to see me for the sake of our son. He cried when he saw how much Nolan had grown. I told him I was leaving for our son's sake, and he didn’t stop me. I promised to do everything I could to help him, but when I got home, his mother started hitting me in front of my baby for visiting him in jail. They weren’t a wealthy family, but people reported everything I did for them. That night, I ran away with my son. I threw away all my memories and went to a friend’s house. She helped me since it was her first year at her job, and I started anew after that." Tears began to fall from Estelle’s eyes, and she hugged Layla to comfort her. Estelle in a sorrowful tone: "You’ve suffered so much. I think if Nolan heard this, he would know how much of a warrior you are. You’ve regained my respect. I just can’t imagine how miserable your life was!" Nolan, who had been standing at the door, had overheard the entire story from his mother. He crouched down, covering his mouth with his hand as tears streamed down his face. He quickly left for the bathroom to wash his face. Once he finished, he headed back to Estelle’s room, where Layla was sitting with a cold expression. Nolan: "I’m a bit hungry. Is there any food left?" Layla smiled with relief: "Yes, the boxes are all yours." She showed him the boxes, steadied herself, and wiped her tears away. Layla took a deep breath: "I should leave for work now. Take good care of yourself, Estelle. Nolan is already taking care of his sister!" Estelle smiled, looking at him: "Of course, I have a good stepbrother." Layla left the room, and as soon as she did, Nolan opened the boxes and began eating non-stop, lost in his thoughts. Estelle noticed his unusually calm demeanor. After a few bites, tears started falling from his eyes as he continued eating. Estelle, with a warm smile, realized that he had been there when Layla told her the story. Estelle in a soft voice: "You were here, listening." Nolan didn’t answer her and continued what he was doing. Lisa then returned with a suitcase, brimming with excitement. Estelle, surprised: "What are you going to do with a suitcase? Are you going somewhere?" Lisa excitedly: "No, I’m not allowed to follow Simon, but I’ll be staying with you at your house, Estelle. Isn’t that great?" Estelle, confused: "Why would you do that?" Lisa, annoyed by Estelle’s words: "How can you say such a thing instead of being happy?" Estelle reassured Lisa: "Don’t be mad! I’m happy that you’re spending time with me!" Lisa stared at Estelle, frustrated: "Weren’t you the one who told your father not to delay the honeymoon anymore and convinced Layla too, so your grandfather brought all his bodyguards to ensure your house’s security?" Nolan, stunned: "You did this, Estelle?" Estelle, tired: "Yes, because I felt guilty about ruining their honeymoon for my sake, and Nolan will be with me because I want to return to work!" Lisa, curious: "What do you mean? Do you want to stay with Nolan alone at home?" Estelle, embarrassed: "Are you crazy? I just want to return to my work!" Nolan, showing a serious look: "She’s right! I might fail to protect you like last time when your grandfather put his faith in me!" Estelle, annoyed: "I’m not a child. Everything is over now, and I wish I could take care of myself!" Lisa, with a nonchalant face: "I never said anything, but it’s too early to go back to work, especially after what you’ve been through!" Nolan, with a serious look: "She’s right. You’re still exhausted; you need more rest." Estelle sighed: "Alright, but if I don’t focus on my work, I’ll go crazy!" Lisa, excited: "You can focus on other things with me, like going shopping, watching movies at the cinema, or going to a spa!" Estelle, sarcastically: "Don’t you have work?" Lisa, avoiding the question: "I skipped work since my wedding party is in two weeks! Isn’t Nolan missing work too?" Estelle, with a determined, frustrated look: "Yes, I know that. He’s going back tonight!" Nolan, in shock: "What? Who decided that?" Estelle, with a sarcastic smile: "I did! Do you have a problem with that? I feel sorry for Steven, who’s managing work on his own!" Nolan, frustrated: "So you care so much about Steven? We work in different domains lately, and he’ll obligate me to stay late at his company to finish my work!" Estelle sighed: "No, just leave! I’ll be fine. I don’t want to feel guiltier about you missing work because of me." Nolan, rolling his eyes, annoyed: "Well if that’s what you want, I’m leaving, but don’t forget to call me if you need anything." Nolan headed toward the door. Lisa jumped in happiness: "Now we’ll have our girls’ time!" Estelle showed a confused look: "Is it just me, or are you more emotional lately?" Lisa took a deep breath with a serious look: "You’re half right! I need to ease up! I think it’s because he’ll be gone for so long." Estelle, with a comforting look: "I get it. I understand a bit, even if I don’t have a loved one right now. I can relate." Lisa, with curious eyes and a serious voice: "What’s going on between you and Nolan lately?" Estelle tried to ignore the question: "What do you mean, Lisa? Nothing is going on between me and Nolan!" Lisa looked at Estelle with a determined expression: "Don’t avoid the question! You’re acting like you did when you and Nolan were fake dating!" Estelle, looking at the floor nervously: "You’re just imagining things. He’s my stepbrother, nothing more!" Lisa, frustrated: "You’re talking like when I tried to keep you away from Lucas!" Estelle, awkwardly: "He’s my brother, that’s all!" Lisa, with a serious, concerned look: "That’s what you’re trying to make yourself believe, isn’t it? But how do you truly feel?" Estelle, worried, showing a confused face: "I don’t know how to feel. I’m lost, and that scares me. He’s my stepbrother; that’s what we both decided to be. Why do I keep having these complicated emotions?" Lisa, concerned: "I guess you started liking him without realizing your relationship with him as a stepbrother." Estelle, nervously: "I can’t like him. I’ve always considered him my stepbrother!" Lisa, smiling with concern: "Well, ignoring your emotions can’t last forever. You’ve even stopped calling him 'Nol.'" Estelle, worried: "What if he hates me when he finds out about these confusing feelings?" Lisa, gently patting Estelle’s head: "I don’t think he’ll take it negatively, but that’s just my opinion." Lisa tucked Estelle in, suggesting she get some rest and that maybe her emotions would become clearer after some sleep. Later, with the lights off and both Lisa and Estelle asleep, Estelle had a terrifying nightmare about her k********g. She woke up sweating in fear, shouting. Lisa, shocked, rushed to Estelle and began comforting her.
