CHAPTER 16:

5000 Words
The pressure Estelle felt at night was unbelievable, and she continued working on her piece of art to avoid thinking about the awkward situation she had fallen into. Lisa kept observing her while texting Simon, and then she suddenly spoke. Lisa tried: I just want to sleep, can't you finish it tomorrow? You are forcing yourself to work, and it's annoying me! Estelle focused: I have to finish it tonight; I am close to ending this. You can count down from ten! All of a sudden, the lights went off. Lisa panicked: What's wrong with the lights? Estelle, are you there? Answer me. Estelle? Estelle started sweating and imagining the pictures of her k********g. These dark memories kept haunting her brain when the light disappeared, and she started hearing her kidnapper's voice. She began trembling, closing her ears in this scary darkness. Estelle, with a mortified voice: Don't come near me! Stay away! Don't stay away! They are coming for me! They are coming for me! Help! Please, help me! Lisa raised her voice out of worry: Estelle, don't panic! I am Lisa! I am near you, but I can't see you! Calm down! As the lights were turned on, a figure rushed to Estelle, hugging her with all his force. It was Nolan! Nolan, out of breath: It's okay, everything is fine. It was my fault; I made the lights go off because I was working on something specific. I shouldn't have done that. I am sorry! Nolan started patting Estelle's head, concerned: Don't be afraid, we are here, Estelle. Cool down! He handed her a bottle of water and caressed her hair gently. Estelle seemed to ease up a bit, and then he took her outside the room to the garden, where she could breathe fresh air and relax. Lisa followed them. Lisa was concerned: How do you feel right now? I will give you the sleeping pills the doctor prescribed to you once we head to your room. If you want, I will sleep in another room and let Nolan stay by your side! Estelle, still trembling, realized her situation while clinging to Nolan's shirt, and held Lisa's hand with a cracked voice: No need, let's go back to my room. I should take the pill and sleep well while you're near me! Lisa shrugged, concerned, with a smile: Fine, if that's what you want! Estelle released herself from Nolan's arm and left with Lisa, who showed a reassuring look to Nolan. When they arrived at Estelle's room, Lisa handed Estelle the pills and tried to change the mood. Lisa sarcastically smiled: Well, I noticed your awkwardness disappeared in Nolan's warm embrace. I might have ruined your beautiful night hugging each other! Estelle, embarrassed, in a timid voice: What are you saying all of a sudden? Stop that! Lisa smiled: Look, your cheeks are getting red, so cute! Estelle, nervous: I am red from crying! Lisa smiled with concern: Don't worry, I will sleep near you and caress your hair all night. Estelle took a deep breath, then looked at Lisa and smiled: Thank you, Lisa. Tomorrow morning, the sky was blue, the sun was shining, and the streets nearby were filled with green spaces, which made the view peaceful and relaxing. At Jefferson's house, everyone was asleep because it was their vacation day. Nolan woke up early to continue his work and planned to meet Zack and Kevin for help! Lisa, out of excitement, turned the curtain on and started waking Estelle up. Estelle tried to open her eyes. Estelle in a tired voice yawned: What are you excited about? Lisa in an energetic voice: Going shopping and to the cinema together! Estelle sat on her bed, then spoke in a lower voice: We should head somewhere before going to the mall. Lisa was confused: Where? Both of them prepared themselves and headed downstairs to the breakfast table. They found Nolan already eating breakfast. Nolan smiled sarcastically: Well, good morning, sleeping beauties! Lisa in an annoyed voice: Can't you wait for us? Nolan, ignoring Lisa: I have plans to do, but I will join you as soon as possible at the mall since I have a day off. Lisa annoyed: Why would you ruin our girly hangout? Nolan indifferently answered: It's for safety. I have to hang out with both of you today, but it doesn't interest me at all. Nolan looked at Estelle with a gentle voice: How did you sleep? Estelle smiled back at Nolan: Well, no need to worry! Estelle in a concerned voice: The plans you have, are they important? Nolan smiled: Chill out, it's not something you should be overwhelmed by! Nolan noticed Estelle holding a small bag, so he asked curiously about it. Nolan: Is there something in that small bag? Estelle nervously put it away: No, it's just a gift for someone. Nolan forced a smile: Someone? I guess this person is lucky to receive a gift from you! Estelle confused: Lucky? Why? It's just a small thing! Lisa smiled sarcastically: Well, Nolan is annoyed because he didn't receive a gift from you! Nolan avoided answering in an indifferent voice: Not at all, I was just curious. Nolan waved at them and left the mansion. Then the girls made their way with the driver. Lisa was curious about their destination, so she asked Estelle. Lisa: Where are we going, Estelle? Estelle answered straightforwardly: To the Hood's company. I didn't thank Steven properly, so I thought it would be better if I paid him a visit. Lisa was surprised: If Nolan heard this, he would be very angry! Estelle answered coldly: Why would he? I just want to express my gratitude. When they arrived at the Hood's company, Estelle, taking Lisa with her, was able to enter easily this time. She asked her to wait for her outside the office, and Estelle headed directly to the secretary. Estelle in a confident, serious voice: Hello, I am Estelle Jefferson. Can I see Mr. Steven Hood, please? The secretary hesitated before she spoke: I am very sorry, Miss Estelle, but it won't be possible today. He is very busy, and he rarely closes his office doors. He hates it when we try to reach him for non-scheduled meetings. Estelle, disappointed: If that's the case, I won't bother him more. Steven's voice was heard from far away, then he came closer: I never said you would bother me, Estelle. I just didn't expect you would come to the company to meet me! Steven showed a gentle smile: Let's head to my office first! Steven showed the way to Estelle. As she entered the office, it was a huge mess—papers and screens everywhere, cups of coffee in every single place. Steven started moving away some papers to let Estelle sit. Steven in an unstable voice: I am sorry to meet you in this messy office. I am not known for being very organized; it's just that I was under a lot of pressure lately. Can we head to another office? It would be better. Steven headed to another office, followed by Estelle. It was more proper and empty. Steven with a smile: This is better! Estelle took a seat, looking at Steven's pale face and dark circles around his eyes. Steven took a deep breath with a gentle, concerned voice: Have you recovered well from your injuries? How do you feel right now? Estelle smiled in a hesitant voice: I am doing well! Steven, relieved: That's great to hear! Estelle uneasily: Why didn't you visit me at the hospital? Steven in a cold voice: It's because I had so much work to do! Estelle, still hesitating: If that's the reason, I am alright. Estelle took a deep breath, then stared at Steven confidently: Don't feel guilty about what happened to me. I came here to thank you for your help. Nolan told me that you spent the night working to find me. I am truly grateful for what you did, Steven. Estelle smiled, looking tenderly at Steven: You saved both of us! So don't feel responsible for anything! Steven was stunned and then straightened his voice: I didn't do anything important to be thanked in the first place, so I am fine. Estelle with a determined, concerned look: You're not. You didn't have enough sleep, and I guess you didn't even eat properly in days. Is that because of guilt? I feel responsible for your current state right now. Steven, with gentle eyes, smiled: I am truly okay. Don't feel responsible. Estelle, keeping her determined eyes: So take care of yourself. Straighten yourself, because this is nothing like you. If I had known before, I should have at least brought you some meals. Steven, in a reassuring voice: I guess I am more funny, charismatic, open-minded, and straightforward, you are right. But even in competitions when I was at university, I became in an awful state, especially when I focused on something I should reach! Steven smiled sarcastically: Seeing you worried about me like that makes my heart melt. Estelle laughed briefly, then said in a calm voice: Welcome back! Steven kept looking at Estelle with interest. Steven, curiously showing a mischievous smile: So, what do you think about my proposal to you at your father's wedding? Have you thought about it? Estelle uneasily: Well, I hadn't had time to think about it, however— Steven raised his finger, asking her to not continue her words. Steven sighed: I guess I have no luck. I just hate being refused by beautiful ladies, so I prefer not to listen. Estelle, reassuring Steven: You are such a wonderful man full of qualities; any woman would be lucky to have you. Steven with a sarcastic smile: So you are saying that you are not just any woman, and you are very special? Estelle tried to explain, and Steven burst into laughter. Steven looked at Estelle gently, in a calm voice: I think I should thank you for making my day better! Estelle denied Steven's words and said in a grateful voice: I should be the one thanking you; that's why I brought you this! Steven looked at the small bag with curiosity as Estelle handed it to him, and he looked inside. It was a beautifully crafted structure with words saying, "Thank you, Steven Hood," and the company sign near it. Estelle uneasily: It's just a small gift I made. I know it's not perfect! Steven showed a bright smile, clearly touched and astonished by Estelle's work. Steven: This is the most beautiful gift I have received. Being able to create such crafting from your small hands makes you an artist! Steven held Estelle's hand and said in a low voice: Thank you. Estelle smiled back at Steven: I am glad you liked it! A phone rang and interrupted their conversation; it was Lisa calling Estelle. Estelle in a hurry: I should leave right now. I kept Lisa waiting for too long! Estelle said her last words to Steven: I wish you all the best, Steven! As she waved at him, Steven showed a sad smile. Steven in a low voice: You brighten my day, Estelle! Steven called the secretary with a serious demeanor: I need the analyzing data of my office glass right now! Secretary: As you wish, Mr. Steven. Estelle rushed toward Lisa, who was very angry at her. Lisa, frustrated: How can you make me wait all this time? Estelle: I am sorry, but he was in an awful state. I had to help him! Lisa got closer to Estelle's eyes and started fixating on them: Seeing you like that, I almost forgot about the girl who confessed her feelings yesterday! Estelle annoyed: Can't you stop, please?! Meanwhile, Nolan met with Kevin and was waiting for Zack to discuss the security tools he was making. However, it turned out Zack didn't come to the police station today. Both of them were shocked; he rarely misses his work. When they tried to reach him on the phone, they couldn’t. Kevin, worried: Do you know what happened to him? It's abnormal for him to disappear all of a sudden. Nolan shrugged: I guess he is on a secret mission! When Nolan met up with Lisa and Estelle at the mall, he asked where they had been. Without hesitation, Estelle told him they had visited Steven's company, mentioning the gift she was holding as a sign of gratitude. Nolan showed a hint of annoyance and said, "So the gift was for him? I'm glad you paid him a visit; he needed that." Afterward, they entered store after store, buying clothes for Estelle. Nolan grew tired, but every time Estelle tried on a new dress, he couldn’t help but watch her intently. His eyes followed her every move, as if he was drawn to her without realizing it. They then headed to a skincare session, where Estelle spent an hour getting pampered while Nolan waited outside. As the minutes dragged on, an idea came to Lisa. With her wedding party approaching, she decided to visit a famous designer store in the mall. The designer, a man well-known for his exquisite taste, rushed over to Lisa, greeting her as a regular customer. But when he saw Estelle, his eyes lit up. He was thrilled to have such a beautiful and famous figure in his store and eagerly began searching for the perfect dress for her. Nolan, on the other hand, became increasingly annoyed. He watched the designer fawn over Estelle, his irritation growing with each compliment the man paid her. Despite trying to stay composed, it was clear that Nolan's mood had soured, and he struggled to hide his displeasure. The Designer: "What an exquisite beauty you have, Estelle dear. I already found the perfect dress for you!" Nolan, annoyed, air-quotes his fingers: "So, what will he find for your ‘exquisite beauty’?" Estelle, indifferently: "I think he’s great at his job. I don’t get what bothers you about him." Lisa joins them excitedly: "So, what do you think? He’s going to do a fantastic job on my wedding dress. He’s truly gifted!" The designer brings a shiny dress to Estelle with a smile: "Estelle dear, try this one. It will look gorgeous on you!" Nolan loses his temper and starts laughing. The Designer looks at Nolan: "Excuse me! Who are you? I don’t recall letting you in! What family are you from?" Nolan furiously glares at the designer. Estelle is in the dressing room, so Lisa answers the designer while looking at a magazine: "He’s with us. He’s Estelle’s stepbrother." The Designer, surprised: "I’m sorry, sir, I didn’t realize! Would you like some tea?" Nolan, coldly: "No need. I’ll wait outside." Lisa, noticing his state, says: "Wait, aren’t you going to give her your opinion on the dress?" Nolan, still cold: "It doesn’t concern me, and I have no idea about fashion. I’d better stay outside." As Nolan is leaving the store, Estelle steps out of the dressing room. He freezes, astonished by her appearance. Estelle looks at Nolan with a bright smile. Nolan, in a low voice: "I guess I can’t stop this, no matter how hard I try." Nolan takes Estelle’s hand and gently turns her around: "You are fascinating." Estelle keeps smiling, while Lisa claps her hands in delight. Lisa, excitedly: "You look stunning, girl!" Nolan suddenly notices someone outside—it’s Zack’s sister, Aubrey, accompanied by her coworker. They’re looking at the dresses in the showcase. Aubrey’s Coworker: "Aren’t they magnificent dresses? I wish I had one!" Aubrey, coldly: "Do you think we can afford this? Be realistic, let’s leave." Aubrey’s Coworker, frustrated: "You’re a dream crusher. Don’t you have any dreams?" Aubrey, carelessly: "Dreaming isn’t important. Why should I bother?" Aubrey’s Coworker, annoyed: "That’s why you’re still single!" Nolan rushes outside to speak with Aubrey and ask about Zack. Estelle, annoyed, looks out the window. Lisa speaks sarcastically: "Estelle, you’ve got a rival now! How will you keep her away? You need to confess your feelings before it’s too late!" Estelle returns to the dressing room. Estelle clenches her fists, her expression turning cold and confident: "I don’t care. Why should it always be me who does everything? I’m not even sure of his feelings for me. If he decides to go with whoever, I don’t care. I’ll date someone who cares and is straightforward with me!" Estelle adjusts her hair confidently: "I’ll focus on myself and my feelings." Lisa, in a reassuring voice: "Alright, calm down. You haven’t fully recovered yet, and you’re right." Outside the store, Aubrey is shocked to see Nolan there, while her coworker seems to enjoy his presence. Nolan smiles: "Aubrey, we meet again. How have you been?" Aubrey’s Coworker suddenly speaks in a sarcastic, low voice: "He’s calling you by your first name, Sergeant!" Aubrey, with her usual serious expression: "I never thought we were that close, Nolan. But I guess I’m your friend’s sister, after all." Nolan, hesitantly: "I’m sorry if that bothered you. I won’t do it again. But I need your help right now—it’s urgent!" Aubrey, confused, in a serious tone: "What would someone like you need from me? I hope it’s nothing illegal because I won’t be able to help you!" Nolan, looking determined: "It’s about your brother. Do you know where he is? I tried reaching him on the phone, but I couldn’t. Is he on a secret mission or something? I need his help right now!" Aubrey shows a sarcastic smile, then straightens: "How would I know that? I don’t care about his whereabouts! Even if I did, why would I tell you?" Nolan, disappointed: "Is that so?" Aubrey, coldly: "Yes, if that’s all, I’m leaving. Have a good day, Nolan Smith." Aubrey turns to leave, her coworker following, but Nolan grabs her wrist. Nolan, with a determined look: "Can’t you help me?" Aubrey, annoyed, coldly: "I told you, I don’t work illegally! I take my job seriously, unlike my brother, who keeps getting into trouble! So, it’s a no!" Nolan, with a desperate look and serious voice: "I know that, but it’s to ensure Estelle’s safety! Please!" Aubrey, glaring at Nolan with a harsh voice: "If you care about her, you shouldn’t put her in danger in the first place. It’s a shame because she sacrificed her life to save you. However, feeling guilty and trying to ensure her safety won’t help you. That’s my advice." Nolan sighs: "No matter what you say, you’re right. I was the source of her suffering, and I don’t deny it. But this time, I have to save her. I just need some information from the database about certain people to keep them away from her." Aubrey looks at her coworker, signaling her to leave. Aubrey, with a serious look: "I told you, I’m not as sensitive as my brother, and I take my work seriously! If you need me to ensure someone’s protection, I need reasons, identities, goals—and this won’t come from you, but from Estelle Jefferson herself. I can’t start anything because you feel guilty." Nolan, looking deeply into Aubrey’s eyes, determined: "She will never make me feel guilty, and I’m not asking this out of responsibility. I care for her and don’t want her to face terrible things again. I want her to rest peacefully and keep smiling, and if that costs me my life, I’m not afraid of it." Aubrey, stunned: "Have you lost your mind? I might be insensitive and careless, but I’ve never met someone willing to give up their life so easily!" Aubrey, seriously: "How can you be so sure she’s in danger? Who gave you this information?" Nolan, in a low voice, sighs: "It was her grandfather, Bob Jefferson." Aubrey, crossing her arms in curiosity: "Well, that’s interesting and requires some research." Nolan, determined: "So, what’s your final answer?" Aubrey sighs and speaks in a serious voice: "I’ll try, but legally. First, I need all the information you have about these dangerous people. After that, I’ll assess the situation and give you a proper answer." Nolan smiles gently: "Alright, but I need more data to fill my protection device, at least to avoid any immediate danger. Can you fill it for me? It’s not necessary to break any rules or share more information—just fill it." Aubrey, stunned: "A protection device? This is new, even for the police. I kind of appreciate it. I agree, but you won’t be aware of any data I input into it. Also, this isn’t my final decision. Send me everything you’ve got or visit me later—I’ll try." Nolan, smiling and looking deeply into Aubrey’s eyes: "I guess you’re still your brother’s sister, after all!" Aubrey, with a cold expression: "You’re wrong about that! Have a good day!" Aubrey straightens herself and leaves in a hurry. Estelle and Lisa finally finish their session with the designer and come out of the store. Nolan, confused: "Did you finish already?" Lisa, surprised: "Already? You were having such a long conversation while we finished. Maybe you didn’t notice the time. We’ll be late for the cinema. Let’s go!" Estelle, with a careless expression and cold voice: "I guess you had an interesting conversation with Zack’s sister, am I right?" Nolan, in a normal tone: "I was just asking her about the investigation and her brother because no one can reach him." Estelle forces a cold smile: "Is that so? You seemed to enjoy the conversation. I think it’s better to head to the cinema now." Nolan, confused: "Is something wrong?" Estelle adjusts her hair in a cold voice: "Not at all." At the cinema, they book a VIP room for themselves. Lisa and Nolan ensure the workers don’t turn off the lights for Estelle’s sake. They watch the movie, but there’s still tension between Estelle and Nolan. The movie ended, and then Lisa suddenly spoke: Lisa, excited: "We should head home, Estelle. We will be late for our meeting with the coach!" Estelle nodded, and then Nolan, confused, asked them: "A meeting? A coach? When did you plan all that?" Lisa, pretending to be surprised: "Didn't I tell you? I booked a talented sculptor coach to teach us self-defense, and even Estelle agreed with me. He is one of the top-class coaches!" Nolan, still in shock: "I'm sorry, what did you say? A coach, and he's a man?" Lisa, annoyed: "What's wrong with that? We are women, but after what we've been through, we need to learn how to defend ourselves!" Nolan, unable to believe it and still confused: "And have you informed your husband about this? Because I know he won't agree!" Lisa, adjusting her hair confidently: "My husband trusts me, and I do not need to inform him beforehand. I can tell him later, and it's none of your business. Just because you're annoyed, don't blame me!" Nolan, smiling sarcastically: "There is no need to ask for a coach! You should cancel your appointment! Self-defense, you say? I will gladly be your coach. I have some medals from my teenage years, and I have a sculpted body too!" Lisa, stunned, in a nosy voice: "Look at you, full of yourself. If you say so, I will cancel the meeting!" Lisa whispered to Estelle, who was silent and showing a careless face the whole time: "I guess he was about to lose his temper; he started to show off!" Estelle, in an indifferent voice, rolling her eyes: "If that's the case, let's go home." When they arrived home, they went to the sports salon on the other side of the mansion and changed their clothes. Nolan, concerned: "Estelle, will you be able to keep up? You are still tired and haven't fully recovered yet!" Estelle, confidently, in a cold voice: "Of course I can. If I feel exhausted, I won't force myself; I will rest!" Nolan started teaching them by stretching first. He began with Lisa, showing her simple moves, and made her fall on the floor. She was very annoyed but couldn't succeed. When he headed to Estelle, he was worried about her state, but Estelle insisted in a cold demeanor on doing the exercise. She started following Lisa's steps but couldn't get them right. Then, when Nolan got closer to her, she lost her balance. To protect her, Nolan put both of his hands beside her to avoid the shock since she was injured. They both fell into an awkward position, sharing the same gaze, looking deeply into each other's eyes as if time had stopped. Then Estelle came back to her senses, moved Nolan away, annoyed. Estelle, with a cold face: "I think the session is over." She left in a hurry, while Lisa looked at Nolan furiously. Nolan, confused: "Why are you looking at me like that, Lisa?" Lisa answered: "You're not considering the poor girl's feelings!" Then she followed Estelle. Nolan was left questioning what Lisa meant by her words. At night, an awkward silence fell at the dining table. No one could speak or discuss anything. Estelle, showing a cold expression, was eating peacefully, but Lisa and Nolan weren't comfortable. Nolan, with a determined look and a serious voice: "Estelle, when you finish dinner, join me in the garden. I have something to discuss with you!" Estelle answered carelessly: "I don't want to!" Nolan looked deeply into her eyes, seriously: "I said it's important!" Nolan stood up from the dining table, took Estelle's hand, and forced her to follow him to the garden. Estelle, coldly: "I didn't finish my meal!" Nolan, carelessly: "I will make you a new one, but we have to break this awkward silence between us right now!" Estelle, coldly: "There is nothing abnormal!" Nolan pressed on Estelle's shoulder, seriously: "There is!" Estelle, annoyed: "Don't touch me again!" Nolan, frustrated: "Fine. I am leaving for a nearby town. Steven wants to open an office there and asked me to take care of it." Estelle showed a sarcastic smile: "Is that so? I wish you good luck, brother!" Estelle was leaving, but Nolan grabbed her hand. Nolan, tightening his fist: "Wait, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say it that way!" Estelle took a deep breath and then spoke in a serious voice: "When I was about to throw myself from that roof, were the promises you made to me serious? Or were they just to save me?" Estelle looked deeply into Nolan's eyes, seriously: "You promised to stay by my side no matter what! Do you remember that? I thought you were serious and that you never left my side after that." Nolan, stunned, in a serious voice: "Of course, at that time, I wanted to save you, but also, I was very serious about my words." Estelle's eyes filled with emotion, confused: "So why are you leaving?" Nolan, in a desperate voice, looking into her eyes: "Because I ended up making a mistake, and if I stay longer, I will stick to it and will be unable to control my feelings!" Estelle, concerned, in a gentle voice: "Can you at least tell me what kind of mistake?" Nolan put her hand on his cheek, in an upset voice: "I can't, because I will ruin everything!" Estelle put both of her hands on Nolan's cheeks, looking determined: "It's okay because I did the same thing, and I am ready to be responsible for it!" Nolan, tightened his fists with a serious voice: "I accepted you as a sibling, but there were some complicated feelings that stood in my way. After that, I started enjoying my time with you more and more, and you got prettier in my eyes. I wanted to enjoy your smile more often. I didn't want any male to touch you or speak with you, and when I heard you talking about another man, I was so furious. When I got close to you, my heart started racing just like that." Estelle was astonished by Nolan. He took her hand and put it on his heart. Nolan, in a gentle voice, placing her hand on his heart: "And that's how I realized that I ended up falling for you romantically instead." Nolan showed a sad smile: "Do you see how wrong I am, Estelle Jefferson? Because I want you to be mine." Estelle froze in place, then her eyes filled with tears, and in a gentle voice: "I am wrong too, Nolan Smith, since I want the same thing, even if we promised our parents. I couldn't fight back these emotions toward you! Look, even my heart is beating faster." Estelle put Nolan's hand on her heart, which was racing nonstop. Estelle, smiling happily, her eyes filled with emotions: "I don't feel wrong anymore since we share the same feelings. I am relieved." Nolan hugged Estelle tightly as she hugged him back. He carried her and started spinning her around from happiness, then put his hand on her cheeks and kissed her. A party popper exploded from the window. They were shocked—it was Lisa's doing. Lisa, looking from the window, clapping her hands: "Finally, I can sleep well tonight." This night is filled with emotions.
