Chapter 38

She watched carefully as his expression showed no signs of joking. She pursed her lips and squirmed in her seat uncomfortably. “You realize I’m only twenty?” she whispered incredulously. He pulled back and shrugged, “Twenty is a good age. You’re still young and healthy. You wouldn’t have any complications giving birth,” he concluded. “I think you’re missing the point,” she replied concerned. “If you’re worried about the finances, don’t be. I’ll provide everything; you can buy whatever you want. If you want a private hospital room, I’ll get the best one. If you want an nurse by your side the entire time, then just tell me,” he went off. She furrowed her eyebrows in conflict. “This isn’t about any of those things. What I’m saying is that I only married you because my dad needed help. I didn’t marry you with the actual pretence of having a family with you,” she explained. She saw how his face was painted with a surprised expression while slowly retracting his hand as he smoothed it over his hair. “Look, I’m tired,” she replied with a sigh, “I’m going to sleep.” She stood up from the couch and was about to leave when she felt his arm grab her hand. “You know, maybe this wasn’t the right moment to talk about it,” he said. She looked him with a face that read ‘Go figure.’ “Why don’t you come with me to the office tomorrow?” he suggested, “It would give you a change of pace.” Daniella lifted an eyebrow at him confused. “Your office?” she repeated questionably. “Yeah,” he nodded. “You don’t like being stuck here all day, right? You can come stay with me and I’ll show you around the company.” Daniella tilted her head thinking about it. Why would he suddenly ask her to go to his company? Did he have some ulterior motive? “You don’t want to?” he assumed. She shook her head. “No, it’s not that. I’m just wondering why you’re suddenly inviting me,” she muttered. He let go of her arm and stood up beside her. He then rested his hands on her shoulder. “I just thought that maybe you’d like it,” he said. Although she wasn’t buying it, she would rather go outside than stay in the condo any longer, so she ultimately agreed. “Okay,” she nodded slowly. “I’ll go.” Daniella saw Damien’s face light up. What surprised her after that was how, for the first time that they’ve been married, he suddenly leaned in and gave her a peck on the cheek as if to say ‘Thank you’. She stood there dumbfounded as he walked off after giving her their first actual act of affection as a ‘couple’. If she was being honest, she thought she would at least feel a little embarrassed. However, she didn’t feel anything by it other than surprise. It left a weird sensation in her chest and not the good kind. She couldn’t explain it. It was like when something unsettling was developing in her. What kind of sign was that? Damien’s car window was fully opened as she let herself relax with the cool breeze. “Usually you would need to call in beforehand if you were visiting the office but you’re an exception,” he smiled. For a split second she had happily forgotten all about him but when he spoke up, she felt as though she was roughly pulled back into a hellish reality. “Why’s that?” she asked, slightly curious. She saw how he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as they drove along the road. “Because you’re my wife,” he stated with a slight proud tone. On the outside she didn’t show any reaction. But on the inside, she was gagging and even shuddered at even being called the word ‘wife’, especially by him. She did dream of being married but that was a dream to be fulfilled after at least another six years. “We’re here,” he said, pulling up to a tall skyscraper building. She gazed in awe at its sheer monstrosity as a tower. It was as if it was there just to symbolise money and power. “Pretty big, isn’t it?” he said behind her. “Yeah,” she said astounded. “It took a year to build,” he said, walking ahead of her. She silently followed, not able to comment. Her dad did own a company but never as big as this. Theirs was just a simple two-storey building that was always lacking. When she walked inside, she instantly felt even more overpowered. Everyone was wearing clad suits and ties. Prim and proper ladies were rushing around in heels that clicked against the polished tiles. Men were talking in ‘business talk’ that she couldn’t understand.
