He returned the stare right back at her before looking around the room in confusion. They both looked at each other with a mild case of awkwardness. “Are you his secretary?” he asked. She glanced sideways. “Uh, no,” she replied awkwardly, still wondering what to do. “Do you want me to call him up?” He silently looked at her before replying. “No, that’s fine. I’ll just wait for him here.” She nodded slowly and awkwardly returned back to her magazine. However, as she continued to read, she couldn’t help but feel his gaze on her. Maybe it was her imagination but she ended up turning each page without even making an effort to read the words on it. Not before long, she sighed and closed the magazine before putting it on the coffee table and turning back around towards him. Their eyes met one another and a striking face clashed with a confused stare. “Do you need something?” she asked, thinking he wanted to ask her for something. “My apologies, I was just wondering if I’ve met you before,” he questioned. She raised her eyebrow, “I don’t think we have?” “Then it was my mistake. I just thought I might have saw you at a hardware store before,” he murmured. She widened her eyes in excitement, “Are you talking about peter Hardware?” He whipped his head towards her in recognition, “That’s right.” She brightened up and quickly got up from her seat and walked over to the man. “You must have seen me,” she replied enthusiastically, “Sometimes I go there to help out my dad.” He smiled, “I knew I wasn’t imagining things.” “But how do you even remember? I didn’t even go there that often,” she said in surprise. “Well, it’s hard to forget such a pretty face,” he chuckled. Daniella could feel her cheek flush and lightly chuckled with him awkwardly. “I was actually about to go there recently but the shop said its closed down,” he said. Daniella widened her eyes and frowned. “The business had a bit of a slip up,” she said softly. “A slip-up? What kind of slip-up?” he asked concerned. She pursed her lips together crossed her arms. “Well, if I’m being honest, someone purposely prevented any sales from happening so we had to shut it all down,” she replied bitterly. He furrowed his brows in worry. “That’s horrible. Did they manage to set it back up?” he asked. She shook her head, “No. My dad, who owns the company, is currently in the hospital right now recovering.” “Your father? You’re his daughter? No wonder you help out,” he said in admiration. “But that means that your father lost his company.” She nodded her head bitterly, agreeing silently. “That’s awful,” he frowned. “And illegal. Tell me,” he said, looking fired up, “who was it that did this to your dad’s company?” She gazed at him and wondered if she should tell him. If the man was a client of Damien and she told him about the bad things Damien had done to her then Damien may turn furious. “I don’t know,” she said gazing away. When she said that, she felt him come closer and grab her shoulder. “Do you really not know?” he asked. “It’s more like I can’t really say,” she murmured. She felt his grip on her tenderly. “You shouldn’t be afraid of outing them,” he assured. “And maybe I should have mentioned this before but I’m actually a lawyer.” His revelation startled her. “I’m used to taking on powerful people. No one with any amount of power can ever get away with something that’s clearly wrong,” he stated. In hearing this, Daniella felt a glint of hope in her head. He was right. No one with any sort of authority should be able to control her right now. For the first time in months, she felt a little bit of the weight fall off her shoulders. She had been waiting to hear something like this. “You’re right,” she whispered. He smiled to reaffirm her and casually stood back. “Don’t worry, there’s no one that powerful enough to get away. I’m even taking on a powerful person right now whom I’m sure will go behind bars soon.” “Really?” she asked quizzically, “Who is it?” “Damien Mason.”
