Elira's POV
Time seized on that very moment, and I staggered back in fear. My eyes widened with shock, and I just stood there under the gaze of everyone.
“Oh my goodness! Did you hear that?” Whispers began to spread.
“Is she really mates with the Alpha?” Another person said.
“This is unbelievable! I don't even know her. Have you perhaps seen her before?”
“Nope! But there's no way she's going to be our Luna. If she's unknown, that means she's of no importance.”
The murmurs and indistinct chatters filled my ears, and I stood there in confusion. I looked up at Alpha Kaelen, whom I had just discovered his name.
He stared at me blankly with his face still and his eyes carrying no emotions. I didn't know what to think, so I just looked away.
Will he accept me or not?
Is this my escape or my damnation?
So many thoughts filled my head, and my eyes turned with dizziness.
“How dare you?” His deep and firm voice immediately filled the air, and I looked up at him, trembling.
“Alpha Ka… I uhmm…” I stammered.
“Quiet!” He silenced me, and tears began flowing silently down my face.
“Whose family is she?” Alpha Kaelen demanded, and in a few minutes, one of his men stepped forward. I looked around, hoping to find my stepmother and Mira.
They might hate me, but now is the time when I need them the most.
“Her father was a farmer, but he passed away four years ago,” his man revealed, and Alpha Kaelen burst into laughter, only that his laugh wasn't a good one.
“The daughter of a farmer? Mated to me?” Alpha Kaelen's face twisted in disgust, and he stared at me with so much contempt in his eyes.
“The audacity of you to think I would ever accept someone as lowly as you to be my mate and the Luna of this pack.” He spat out, and I felt every self-confidence I have ever gathered swallowed up.
“Alpha Kaelen, it is not my fault. The moon goddess chose this for me. I didn't plan this,” I explained to him.
Even though it's common knowledge that everyone knows. He seems to be forgetting that part and putting the blame on me.
“Shut up!” He yelled at me, and before I could process anything, his men came after me and grabbed me. They forced me on my knees and held me down.
“I reject you!” he announced cruelly, and I felt a sharp pain through me.
“I knew he was never going to accept her.”
“She should go meet fellow omegas like herself.”
I heard some talk fill my ears, but my mind was blanking out, so their voices were only faint in my head.
“Accept the rejection now!” He ordered, and I looked up at him with tear-filled eyes begging for mercy.
I have done nothing to be treated in such a cruel manner. All I wanted was to enjoy my sixteenth birthday the way my mother would have wanted.
All I wanted was to meet my wolf. I never asked for any of this. Why are they doing this to me?
“I, Alpha Kaelen of the BloodMoon Pack, reject you, Elira, this day before the moon goddess and many witnesses.” He recited without any remorse.
One of the men holding me unsheathed his sword and pointed it to my neck. Leaving me with no choice but to accept the rejection.
“I, Elira of the BloodMoon pack, accept your rejection this day before the Moon goddess and many witnesses.” I recited the same thing, and my body immediately felt heavy with pain throbbing through my being.
I shook my head and couldn't help but sob. Everyone mocked and humiliated me like I was nothing.
My stomach churned, and I stretched my shaky fingers, gesturing for help.
“Did you really think he was going to accept you, Sister?” Mira's voice echoed in my ears.
“Please, Mira! Help me!” I begged her.
“Good thing he rejected you, or else I would have made your life a living hell.” My stepmother chipped in.
“Come on, Mother, we should leave here immediately. We don't want to be seen associated with a rejected wolf.” Mira laughed mockingly, and her mother joined her as well.
Their receding footsteps left a trail as I slumped on the floor in pain, watching everyone turn their backs on me and focused on the man who had just ruined my life, as though nothing had happened.
After a while, I managed to crawl out of the pack square and staggered my way to the woods.
I just wanted to get far away from everyone and go as far as my legs could carry me.
“No! No!!” I dropped on my knees and cried out in frustration.
“Mother! Father!” I called.
“Why didn't you just take me along with you? Why leave me to suffer in the hands of these cruel people? I can't take it anymore.” I cried more until my swollen red eyes were itching.
All of a sudden, I heard leaves crushing and the overwhelming presence of people. I stood up despite the pain in my body and looked around.
“There she is!” I heard a voice, and a group of girls appeared from nowhere.
“Just who do you think you are to have laid claim on the Alpha like that?” The girl spoke again, and I stared at them in confusion.
“I didn't lay claim. The moon goddess made it so.” I clenched my fist in anger at how many times I had to explain something they already knew.
“Oh! Spare me the nonsense. We all know you were just pretending. If anyone is ever going to get the Alpha, it should be me. You are not and will never be worthy of him,” she countered.
“Exactly!” The other girls echoed in unison.
I heaved a deep sigh and threw my hands up in frustration.
“There's no point in trading words with you all. You are hellbent on what you want to believe. And I really don't care to change the narrative,” I sneered at them.
“What! How dare you speak to her like that? You are just a farmer's daughter, and she's the daughter of the beta,” one of her minions countered.
“Have you suddenly grown wings because of the stunt you pulled this night?” They insisted on being ignorant, and I scoffed.
There's really no use bothering him. And my mind is too foggy at the moment. I brushed past them and proceeded to leave.
I will just find another place to wallow in my misery.
“And where the hell do you think you are going?” One of them pulled me back.
“Let me go!” I shrugged, but I was outnumbered.
“This is over, only when I say so. Don't you dare walk out on me!” She yelled and shoved me away.
My body flew in the air, and my head hit against one of the trees. My head collided with one of the branches, and it daggered into my skull.
“Aahh!” My body trembled as pain overwhelmed me.
My breath clogged, and I began gasping as blood gushed out from behind my head.
“Oh my goodness!”
“She's dead!”
“What!”
“I only pushed her!”
“We need to get out of here right away.”
“We never came here, and we had never seen her before in our entire life.”
Their voices echoed in my ears, and their receding footsteps left behind a trail in my subconsciousness.
At that moment, as my spirit left my body. All the memories since I was a child flashed before me.
My mother…
My father…
And the miserable life I have led up till this dying moment. A sad tear escaped my eyes in surrender.
If only I could be reborn, I would choose a different destiny. My eyes went shut, and the world went dark.
