Chapter 2

434 Words
At the restaurant, I sat across from Evan, my eyes a little red. "Tsk. What are you crying for?" Evan sounded impatient. "I finally made time to come out for dinner with you, and now you're crying. What a mood killer." He had told me before that I looked the least like Lillian when I cried. We forced our way through dinner for about half an hour before Evan got a phone call. His expression softened almost immediately. I knew the call had to be from Lillian. Lillian had always been frail, and recently, she had even been hospitalized with a nasty cold. Evan often went to see her under the excuse of visiting family. He had even started coming to me less and less. Of course. Once the real thing was back, who would still bother with a stand-in? After hanging up, Evan grabbed his jacket and hurried out. He did not even spare me a glance. On my way home, I passed by a high school. Watching the teenagers inside laughing and messing around, I could not help but smile. ***** For a moment, it felt like I had gone back to that classroom after school all those years ago. People always said you should not meet someone too unforgettable when you were young. I thought they were probably right. "As long as Johnny keeps showing up in math problems, math will never die." I complained jokingly, not expecting anyone to react. After all, no one had ever listened to me complain. But to my surprise, Owen laughed and could not stop. "Is it really that hard?" Owen asked, his voice full of fondness. He looked so good when he smiled. Before I knew it, I was completely lost in him. Seeing me stare, he quickly stopped smiling, his face filling with apology. "Sorry. I shouldn't have laughed." I clutched my chest and pretended to be hurt. Maybe my acting was too fake, because the second our eyes met, we both burst out laughing. The wind swept through the treetops, and the sunlight was still as beautiful as it had been back then. Only that boy was already out of reach. ***** "Miss, why are you crying?" I pulled myself out of the memory, my heart aching so badly I could barely breathe. "It's nothing. I just miss my boyfriend too much." A blush slowly spread across the girl's face. "If you miss him, then go find him." I smiled with a touch of bitterness. "Okay. When the time comes, I'll go find him." 'Owen, when can I finally go to you?'
