When I got home, I had just set the cake on the table when Evan called me.
"Be at the bar on West Street in thirty minutes."
"Do I have to go?" I tried to negotiate with him.
"Do you think you're in any position to bargain with me?
"Don't forget, your father still hasn't paid this month's debt."
I sighed, resigned, and put on my coat.
*****
Under the dizzying neon lights, I found Evan.
He was holding a glass in one hand, lounging lazily against the couch.
"Damn, Evan. She really does look just like her!" one of his friends exclaimed.
I had heard that sentence countless times.
Evan nodded, neither confirming nor denying it.
I stood there and let them look me over.
"Come here."
Evan slowly sat up, set down his glass, and crooked a finger at me.
I obediently walked over and sat beside him.
Evan reached out, grabbed my face, and turned it from side to side.
"The face really is similar. Too bad Lillian has class, while you're just cheap."
Evan picked up a napkin from the table and wiped his hand in disgust.
"You like money, don't you?
"Ten grand a glass. Let's see how many you can drink."
Ignoring the burning pain in my stomach, I drank glass after glass, numb and mechanical.
I did not stop until Evan snatched the glass from my hand.
"Enough! Have you lost your mind today?"
Evan hurled the glass to the floor. Shards of broken glass sliced across my arm.
"Do you have any idea whose face you're using while acting like this?
"How dare you?"
I knew Evan only wanted me to beg him for mercy with this face.
What he could not get from Lillian, he wanted to take from me.
In the past, I would always go along with it. As long as he was happy, I would get a pretty decent amount of money.
But today, I just did not feel like it.
