Chapter 6

207 Words
When I woke up in bed, Evan was already gone. Last night, he had come home wasted and mistaken me for Lillian again. He had called her name so gently. "Lillian, back then, I didn't have the power to do anything. I could only watch as you married Nathan. Did you ever blame me?" His eyes were unfocused as he gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from my forehead. Whenever this happened, he and Owen would blur together in my mind. ***** "Don't keep your head so low when you're working through problems. It's bad for your eyes." "But this stupid hair keeps getting in my way." I roughly pushed the loose strands away from my forehead. He pulled my hand down, took a small hair clip from his pocket, and carefully pinned my hair back. His movements were so gentle that he looked like an angel sent down from heaven. I froze for a second, then turned to tease him. "Why do you have a girl's hair clip?" His face turned red as he stammered, "I just picked it up on the way here." "Oh, is that so?" I nodded and did not expose him. But inside, I could not stop laughing to myself.
