It happened so fast. By the time I came to, Evan was already down on the floor. Red soaked through his stomach, sharp in my eyes. Those two had never meant to let anyone go. They only wanted Evan dead. "Owen!" Everything was happening too fast for me to catch that I'd called the wrong name. I fought to break free of the hold on me, past feeling the cut on my own neck. I rushed over and pushed through the crowd. I pressed down hard on Evan's wound. Blood came up slow through my fingers. Maybe because I was crying hard enough to choke, Evan lifted his hand and wiped my tears away. There was a rare gentleness in his eyes as he tried to soothe me. "Wynne, don't be scared."
