Lena stood frozen, lips tingling, breath ragged, her entire body humming from the force of Adrian’s kiss.
She’d imagined it a thousand times—how it would feel if he ever let go. But nothing could have prepared her for the reality: the raw heat, the desperate hunger, the way he kissed her like a man starved for years.
And then, just as quickly, he was gone.
Adrian stepped back as if burned, his chest rising and falling sharply. His hands flexed at his sides, as though it took everything in him not to reach for her again.
“This can’t happen,” he said hoarsely.
Her heart plummeted. “But it already did.”
His eyes flashed, a storm of conflict. “You don’t understand, Lena. I swore I’d never—” He cut himself off, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Never what?” she pressed, voice trembling. “Never feel? Never want someone? Because I know what I felt just now, and you did too.”
He turned away, staring out at the glittering skyline. “I made rules for a reason. Lines I don’t cross. I can’t afford weakness.”
Her chest ached. “So wanting me is weakness?”
Silence. Heavy, damning silence.
She almost laughed, bitter and hurt. “You know what’s ironic? You built this empire, Adrian. You have power, money, respect. And yet the one thing you’re terrified of is… me.”
His head whipped toward her, his jaw tight. “Don’t.”
But she stepped closer, fueled by the fire still burning in her veins. “You’re scared of what you feel when you look at me. You’re scared because you can’t control it. But guess what?” Her voice shook. “Neither can I.”
For a heartbeat, they just stared at each other.
Then Adrian cursed under his breath and closed the distance again, his hands gripping her shoulders—not gently, not cruelly, but with a desperation that betrayed him.
“You have no idea what you’re playing with,” he said, voice low and dangerous.
“Then show me,” she whispered.
The tension between them crackled, unbearable. He leaned in, so close she could feel the heat of his breath, but at the last second he stopped, his forehead resting against hers.
“No,” he muttered, forcing himself back. “Not again. If I start, I won’t stop.”
Her lips parted, her heart hammering. “Then don’t stop.”
Something flickered in his eyes—want, pain, a battle she couldn’t name. But instead of giving in, he turned sharply away, putting distance between them.
“This ends here,” he said roughly. “We have meetings tomorrow. Focus on the job.”
Lena swallowed hard, her chest tight. She wanted to scream at him, shake him, demand he admit the truth. But she saw it already—the walls snapping back into place, the cold armor of control he wore like a second skin.
Only now, she knew what lay beneath.
And no matter how hard he tried to hide it, Adrian Blackwood could no longer pretend.

Later, when she lay awake in the darkness of her hotel room, Lena stared at the ceiling, replaying the kiss over and over.
She touched her lips, remembering the heat of him, the way his restraint shattered in her arms.
She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring—distance, denial, maybe even regret. But one thing was certain: the rules had already been broken.
And there was no going back.
