•~ GARNET BETH ~•
I was at work after dealing with the routine for Mr. Layne as if he was using work for distraction, for a change I guess.
After attending three meetings, Compiling expense reports and answering phones and routing calls, it was still afternoon.
“Huff, time has frozen today,” I sighed.
Pinching the bridge of my nose after finishing my sandwich as there was some time left.
I decided to relax a little bit before preparing the financial statement. Sighing, I was humming to myself until I heard a knock on the door with my eyes closed.
Not expecting company for the next sweet minutes, I groaned, “Mr. Layne is busy for the next two hours-”
“I am not here for him,”
My eyes shot open as I found none other Lucien there.
Looking undeniably handsome with his hands in his pocket and leaning against the doorframe, evoking a tingling in my body.
“So, on a lunch break?” He chuckled, lifting his hat a little as a sign of his greeting.
“Yeah.” I nodded shyly, clearing my throat and hoping I wasn’t looking like a mess.
“Um, do you need something?”
Since he wasn’t here for him, I got tense, well aware of his brother’s hostility towards my two second closeness with him.
“The file for the advertising plan samples and the final list of sponsors,” He smiled beautifully, offering me the file.
Taken back, I chuckled nervously at the efforts. Maybe he was too heartfelt about his brother’s other successful project.
“You could have sent an email, Lucien, I would have-”
Abruptly placing his hand on the table, he bent forward to steal my breath by creating a keen link between our eyes.
“Then how else would I have gotten a chance to see you?”
With a scarlet shade rising, I took the file timidly, averting my gaze before he could drown me in the fondness as I decided to act oblivious.
“Why would you want to see me?”
Tugging my hair behind my ear, I placed the file away, opening the laptop to pretend to be busy.
“Hey, I am sorry about what happened the other day,” His honeyed resonance caused my heart to thump madly.
Scratching the back of his neck, he was waiting for my response.
It was inducing the realization that I was wrong and I shouldn’t dream of the impossible. Converting the glee into gloom, I replied in the same way.
“It’s alright, Mr. Layne was right. I should have watched my status before… holding you,”
He became serious suddenly, slamming his other hand on the table too.
“Status has nothing to do with this, don’t vex yourself with these things,”
“No, I shouldn't have…”
“Who is your boss to tell me what I shouldn't have?”
“But, he can surely tell me and I think Mr. Layne is right,”
I forced a smile, not wanting to wrap myself around a sheet of misunderstandings, nothing would happen.
And that stumbled when he held my chin, stiffening my whole being with a spark I failed to suppress.
“Still you couldn’t. Look at you, staring so exquisitely at me,”
His eyes observed me, starting from the bottom, stopping right at my lips and then dragged them back to my eyes, leaving me stiff as he smirked widely, encasing me in his shadow.
“L-Lucien?”
I gulped, unable to lift a finger when he hovered over me and asked huskily.
“Coffee? On me?”
“Sure, why not?”
Forcefully breaking the gaze, I cleared my throat to control myself and not be highly infatuated with a man out of my league.
Rising quickly, I saw I had time, so I ordered the peon to get us two coffees.
It wouldn’t hurt, right?
Endeavoring to place my emotions at bay, I maintained a fair distance as he offered me a cup with his beautiful grin.
“Here you go, hot coffee for this hot lady,”
How could I resist that?
“Thank you,” I giggled.
Taking the drink as we shared a momentary but comfortable silence where I stole glances from time to time.
He was wearing a black button shirt and fawn jeans along with a scarf around his neck as his wavy hair rested on his neck.
With a lull-filled aura, humming to himself and before my cognition, I was staring at him, perusing him from up close, hoping he wouldn’t mind.
“Hey…” He sparked the conversation.
“Hmm?”
“If you don’t mind, can I take your picture?”
He took a moment, locking his eyes with mine, “And our?”
Blushing at the candied question, I found myself being compelled unstoppably once again and even though I should decline, I agreed.
“Sure,”
“Can you lean against the table?”
“I hope I won’t get reprimanded for this,” I said worriedly, getting up and checking myself on the phone.
“Don’t worry, I am here.”
He grinned and being the perfect photographer he was, he took a perfect shot of me which was going to be my next profile picture on social media to flex my beautiful and personal cabin.
And then he stopped right near me.
My body numbed when his broad shoulder touched mine, sending a sweet sensation down my spine, finding myself drowning in him.
He took the picture where I was staring at him and he grinned, “Well, well, can’t take your eyes from me?” He teased, showing me the picture.
“N-No, you took without warning me,” Embarrassed, I whined.
“So let’s another one,”
After a cozy moment, I knew I had to get back to work but he held my elbow, “Don’t go yet,”
“But, I-”
“Shh,”
Not allowing me to leave, closing the gap that dried my throat with anticipation. My body unknowingly reacted as I stopped, placing my hand in the middle.
I gulped, “Lucien,”
He raised his eyebrows, “Hmm.”
“Have we met before?”
I didn’t know why but this thought was evoked each time I saw him.
“What do you think?”
He smirked, leaning against the table, pressing me into him more, not leaving my elbow, too close to my face as I wasn’t sure about taking a step.
“I think I have seen you before, I can't remember where,” I pulled my head back a little.
“Maybe in your dreams as your Prince charming,”
“Oh, you,”
He winked, clicking his cup against mine as I couldn’t help but to giggle in return. I wouldn’t mind that happening honestly.
Staring at him with deep fondness, losing in his talks, wondering-
‘His brother must be lying. Look, how could he possibly be worst-’
“Miss Beth,”
‘And speak of the devil,’
He sounded displeased, extremely displeased, eyes darting towards me that drew anxiousness as I hastily ripped him away from me.
“Yes, Sir?”
“Go back to work if you are done with your mini date,” He mocked, shifting his glare to Lucien who smirked at his brother’s anger.
“I apologize, Sir, but, it's not a date.”
“Go, collect income reports from Jasper and sales reports from Amy,”
“Yes, Sir,”
Nodding, not wanting to enrage him further, I left for my work not before glancing over my shoulder to greet his dominant posture.
Once again, staring competitively with his brother who playfully took a sip of his coffee, even laughing a little that deepened Mr. Layne’s frown.
‘Look, even now Lucien is smiling unlike him,’
