I truly shouldn’t have made a promise I couldn’t fulfill- my fault.
‘Asshole,’
I cursed him in my heart, rolling my eyes from him as my phone rang and it was from the orphanage.
“Ah, dammit.” I sighed under my breath, unsure whether to take it or not.
I was hesitant and someone took advantage of my hesitation.
The car took a sudden turn, I jerked up and accidently pressed the answer button, I gasped and looked at Mr. Layne in fury.
“Ops,”
He smirked, turning off the music and handsomely dragging his fingers across the steering wheel.
He was leaning back on his seat, stopping at the red signal. He stared at me with a sinful smirk then at the phone signaling that I had picked the call.
I made a furious face and put the phone near to my ear, hearing Eri yelling, "You promised, Nut!
Taking her anger out. I doubt she would understand but I shouldn’t have promised in the first place.
“Okay, I understand you have your job but you should have at least come even for five minutes!”
"Eri, I am sorry I broke my promise.”
“You didn't come to meet me even once! Have you forgotten about me!? Why do you always make promises you cannot fulfill!!?"
She literally yelled that even Mr. Layne heard it and looked away awkwardly.
My heart clenched when I heard her heartbreaking words… always make promises I cannot fulfill… Ouch, it hurt more than I imagined.
“Please, I had some urgency. I had work. I will visit on Sunday, I swear, I will make up for it." I said softly, worriedly, trying to sooth Erica and make her understand.
"If you intended to come on Sunday then you should have said Sunday, I was waiting all day for you… "
She broke into a cry while speaking and I felt so repentful for my actions.
“You always say you will be there but you never were, Nut… Never,”
And it brought tears in my eyes for failing as an elder sister.
"I am sorry, I am so sorry-"
“You know what? Don’t even come on Sunday!” And she cut the call.
My heart felt sad, I felt so guilty and angered at myself. With tears glistening, I stared at my phone weakly.
She probably hadn’t realized but it hurt so much to hear it.
“I am sorry… I never meant to,” I whispered.
My voice breaking, covering my face in my hands to not shed a single tear in front of him again.
I sensed him staring intensely at me, probably patiently waiting for me to break into a wail as I was already highly disappointed in myself.
But, I won’t cry, gritting my teeth and after regaining my senses, I took a deep breath and tried to call back but no one picked the call.
I tried again and thankfully Sister Elena picked the call. I panicked, not caring what Mr. Layne would think about how pathetic I am.
"Hello Sister, Please calm Eri. I didn’t mean to break my promise, I had some work. Please make her understand." I pleaded desperately.
"I can understand but she was waiting for you eagerly for a month now." She recalled and I ruined it for her.
I bit my bottom lip upon hearing it, a prick hurt me as a silence fell upon us.
Mr. Layne during the whole scene kept looking at me intensely, driving fast. I was infuriated and was angry because of him. Because of his fast driving, I moved away, hands away from my face.
"Please drive slowly!" I whisper-yelled angrily, narrowing my eyes in dejection.
Upon hearing it, he sped up even more, my heart skipped a beat as I squeaked, holding my sides and turning my gaze to the side.
"Ms. Beth, make sure not to raise your voice at me next time." He warned seriously, causing my body to stiff. My heart hammered against my chest at his order.
"Or else I won't be responsible for the consequences." He threatened, fear upon hearing his dire voice startled me in terror.
My grip around my tightened as I replied in a whisper, "I-I apologize."
He hummed, pleased at my obedience as I gradually noticed that due to my worry, we were not on our way to the office but rather another familiar way.
He finally stopped the car.
My heart felt constricted and under that sharp sapphire gaze but I opened my mouth to ask him were we where I thought we were?
"We are here." He said, getting out. I slowly lifted my gaze and saw that we were outside my orphanage.
My mouth gaped in astonishment when I saw it, I looked at the time, there was still thirty minutes left.
I got out and looked at Mr. Layne who leaned on his car, lit up a cigarette, making a weird but infuriated face.
"Go... I am waiting outside." He mumbled.
Letting out a ring of smoke like he is a professional smoker. The scent was intoxicating but I pretended to be unaffected.
"Thank you very much, Sir!" I beamed.
I jumped and was about to hold his hand but I realized who he was. He noticed too I was about to hold his hand and stopped midway.
“Sorry,”
I said and quickly drew my hand back, he turned his head away and said in a barely audible tone.
“You shouldn’t make promises you cannot fulfil. Hurts when they get broken,”
His voice sounded hurt as if he was referring it to himself. My lips curved downwards. I felt my chest tightened to hear something like this from him.
I never expected any emotional statement from but then again his first words to me where-
"What deluged you in sorrows?"
"Are you gonna stay here or leave?" He asked rudely, dragging me out from my thoughts. I smiled, mumbled a 'thanks ' again and went inside.
My heart felt serene to be at the place I grew up, the place which stayed by my side when I had no one, when I was far away but this place was close to my heart.
I entered and saw Eri crying in the garden as sister Elena was trying to calm her.
"ERI!" I called her loudly, waving my hand out to her. She quickly shot her head at me.
“Nut?”
Upon seeing me her face lit up in happiness, she quickly wiped her tears and ran towards me. I bent on my knees and held my hands to her.
She hugged me, I spun her in the air and kissed her head. I put her down and wiped her remaining tears. We smiled widely.
"You are my strong Eri, don't cry. Look, I came." I said, patting her head. She nodded and engulfed me in a hug.
"I missed you, Nut." She said, looking down.
"Me too.. but don't worry it's just a matter of a few months and we can live together. My job pays well, I can afford an apartment for us," I grinned.
"I also want to live with you but I think I will miss this place if we leave.."
"That's why we will pay visits here every Sunday, after all we have so many memories here!" I smiled widely, she grinned and nodded.
We then talked for a while and at six, the visiting hours ended and I left not before giving a peck over Erica's forehead.
I walked out and was amazed to see Mr. Layne outside, using his phone. He looked at me and put his phone back in his pocket.
"Thank you, Sir." I said sincerely, all my depression faded, I was grinning, I was serene after meeting my beloved sister.
"I'll drop you off. Did you clock out before leaving?" He said nonchalantly, motioning me to come as well but it felt weird.
"Yes and it's okay, I can go." I chuckled nervously,
"I didn't wait here for thirty minutes just to leave without you, Ms. Beth."
My lips formed a thin line and I nodded quickly.
"By the way Sir, how did you know that-" He cut me off.
"Your document, you certainly don't live in the other orphanage, do you?"
"No." I said, I looked away as he dropped me off.
