Chapter 1 Rejected By My Alpha, Claimed By The Ruthless King

1242 Words
The night of the mating ceremony was supposed to mark the beginning of my life. Instead, it became the moment everything I was shattered. The full moon hung low and heavy in the sky, casting silver light over the clearing. The entire pack had gathered, their voices blending into a restless murmur that pressed against my ears like a storm waiting to break. I stood alone in the center. Waiting. My hands trembled despite the warm night air, and I clenched them tightly at my sides, hoping no one would notice. But of course, they noticed. They always did. The weak omega. The girl no one wanted. The one without a wolf strong enough to matter. A few soft laughs drifted through the crowd, followed by whispers that weren’t nearly as quiet as they thought. “Why is she even here?” “She thinks the Moon Goddess would give her a mate?” “Pathetic.” I swallowed hard, forcing my chin higher. Tonight wasn’t about them. Tonight… was about fate. Inside me, my wolf stirred uneasily, her presence faint but alive. He’s close, she whispered. My breath caught. I felt it too. That pull. That invisible thread tightening around my chest, drawing me toward something, someone I couldn’t escape even if I tried. And then the crowd parted. Silence fell like a blade. He stepped forward. Alpha Kael Power rolled off him in waves, suffocating and undeniable. Tall, broad-shouldered, every inch of him radiated dominance. His dark eyes swept over the crowd before settling finally on me. My heart stuttered. This was him. My mate. Hope rose so suddenly it hurt, blooming in my chest like something fragile and dangerous. For a moment, the whispers faded. The judgment disappeared. It was just him and me. Fate had chosen. And maybe—just maybe—this was my chance to finally belong. He walked toward me slowly, his boots crunching against the dirt, each step echoing louder than the last. My pulse raced, my body reacting to his presence in ways I didn’t understand. My wolf whimpered softly. Not in fear. In recognition. I drew in a shaky breath as he stopped in front of me, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body. Close enough that everything else disappeared. “Alpha…” I whispered, my voice barely holding together. For a second just one I thought I saw something flicker in his eyes. Hesitation. Conflict. Something human. Hope tightened its grip around my chest. But then his expression hardened. Cold. Distant. Untouchable. “I, Alpha Kael,” he said, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade, “reject you, Aria, as my mate.” The words didn’t register at first. They hung in the air, heavy and unreal. The world… stopped. My breath caught halfway in my chest, refusing to move. My mind scrambled, trying to make sense of what I had just heard. Reject. Mate. Me. A sharp, searing pain tore through my chest, so sudden and violent that I staggered back. A gasp ripped from my throat as my knees threatened to give out beneath me. “No…” I whispered, shaking my head. “No, you—you don’t mean that…” But he didn’t move. Didn’t soften. Didn’t take it back. The bond fragile and new snapped. I felt it. Like something inside me had been ripped apart with brutal force, leaving behind nothing but emptiness and pain. My wolf let out a broken cry before retreating into silence. Gone. She was gone. The crowd erupted. Gasps. Laughter. Shock. “Did he just reject her?” “Of course he did.” “She’s an embarrassment to the pack.” “I wouldn’t claim her either.” Each word struck harder than the last. My vision blurred, but I refused to let the tears fall. Not here. Not in front of all of them. Not in front of him. “Why?” I forced out, my voice trembling despite my efforts to steady it. “What did I do?” For a moment, he said nothing. Then his gaze shifted—past me. To someone else. A girl stepped forward from the crowd, her lips curved into a satisfied smile. Beautiful. Perfect. Everything I wasn’t. Lyria. The Alpha’s chosen. Understanding crashed over me like a wave. This wasn’t about weakness. This wasn’t about the pack. This was a choice. “I have no use for a weak mate,” Kael said flatly. “And I will not tie myself to someone who would only drag me down.” The words hit harder than the rejection itself. Something inside me cracked. Not just my heart. Something deeper. More permanent. “I see,” I said quietly, though my voice barely sounded like my own. I straightened, forcing my shoulders back despite the way my body trembled. If I was going to break… I wouldn’t do it on my knees. Not for him. Not for anyone. The bond might be gone. But my pride wasn’t. “I, Aria,” I said, my voice steadier now, “accept your rejection.” A flicker of something crossed his face too fast to read. Regret? No. I refused to believe that. Without another word, I turned. The crowd parted again, but this time it wasn’t out of respect. It was disgust. Mockery. Pity. Each step away from the clearing felt heavier than the last, as if the world itself was trying to drag me down. But I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. If I did… I would shatter completely. By the time I reached the edge of the forest, the sounds of the pack had faded, replaced by the quiet whisper of the wind through the trees. Only then did I let the tears fall. They came silently at first. Then all at once. My chest tightened as the pain surged back, stronger now without the crowd to distract me from it. I pressed a hand against my heart, as if I could somehow hold it together. But there was nothing left to hold. I had lost everything. My mate. My wolf. My place in the pack. A broken laugh escaped my lips, hollow and bitter. “Is this what fate had planned for me?” I whispered into the darkness. The forest didn’t answer. But something else did. A presence. Cold. Powerful. Watching. The air shifted, thick with a dominance far greater than anything I had felt before. My body went rigid, instincts screaming at me to run but my legs refused to move. Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the shadows behind me. Not rushed. Not hesitant. Certain. Like a predator who already knew its prey couldn’t escape. My breath caught as the sound stopped just a few steps away. And then A voice. Low. Dark. Dangerously calm. “You smell like rejection… and something far more interesting.” A chill ran down my spine. I turned slowly, my heart pounding against my ribs. And when I met his eyes Everything inside me stilled. Because standing before me was not just another wolf. He was something else entirely. Something stronger. Something dangerous. Something that made even my broken soul react. Alpha Draven And the way he looked at me… Wasn’t with pity. It was with interest. A dangerous, consuming interest that made one thing terrifyingly clear My story wasn’t over. It had only just begun.
