Chapter 2

Connor!” She shouted through the mind link. She was a tall, slender she-wolf with long, dark, almost black hair that fell in waves to the bottom of her shoulders. She had a grace and elegance to her that had not come naturally, but was now second nature. Her father had not believed in training the females of the pack but she had received basic training throughout her time away at school. She had also been secretly training with Connor without her father’s knowledge. She was fairly confident that she could take care of herself in human form against most opponents however she was reluctant to shift if she didn’t absolutely have to. “Front door, 10 minutes.” She continued knowing she could rely on Conor for anything. He was the closest thing she had to a friend in the pack and although she knew her father disapproved of their ‘friendship’ the elite warrior was the one person she needed by her side at this moment. “Got it.” He responded, clearly already on his way to their rendezvous point. She pulled on yesterdays jeans and hoodie from the chair in the corner of the room and slipped on her trainers as she ran out of her bedroom. She knew Connor was on patrol by the western woodlands. In wolf form he would reach the front door of the pack house in 10 minutes easy. If she hurried she could get there first and witness him shift into his naked human form before he had chance to put on some clothes. There were boxes of clothes dotted around the pack, the biggest one right by the front of the pack house, so modesty could be maintained as much as possible. She took the stairs from the alpha floor two at a time trying to mind link her father. She couldn’t sense him or form a link which was worrying. He was either out of range or … she didn’t want to think about that right now. She arrived at the front door just in time to catch a glimpse of Connor’s perfect arse as he was bent down facing away from her pulling on some shorts. She stopped to admire the view almost forgetting why she had called him there. “I hope you didn’t get me here just so you could ogle my ass” he teased turning to face her with a mischievous smile, a smile that reached his deep dark chocolate eyes. He was an excellent specimen of a werewolf. 6 ft 2, well built, muscle on top of muscle, tanned with dark brown hair that fell half way down his neck and the perfect amount of thick stubble to look rugged but not too unkempt. Rose let her eyes wander from his perfectly muscled chest to his perfectly muscled eight pack and down to the sexiest v she had ever seen. “No.” She replied focusing her attention back on the matter at hand. “That just happened to be an unexpected perk.” She started walking towards the northern border explaining everything as they went. She then mind linked the patrol wolves on guard by the north border tonight. They confirmed that her father had left the pack alone just over an hour before, but had growled at them to stay at their posts when they had offered to go with him. They crossed the border together, small markings on the trees the only evidence that they were now in unclaimed territory. Rose tried to mind link the Alpha again but couldn’t feel his presence. She sniffed the air and caught his faint scent lingering in the gentle breeze. She turned her head and looked at Connor. His beautiful deep brown eyes twinkled in the moonlight and a small reassuring smile played on his beautiful full lips. He was incredibly attractive even by werewolf standards. She returned his smile and stepped further into the no-man’s land in which she spent most of her days working in the human world. This however was not an area for a wolf to roam alone at night, so they tracked the scent in their human form, their sense of smell less than that of their wolves, but much better than humans. They walked in silence for about fifteen minutes following the ever increasing scent of their Alpha. With every step that she took Rose became more fearful of the sight that was awaiting her as a different scent became more and more prominent, the deep ferrous stench of blood. Connor was the first to spot the slumped figure of the once powerful Alpha against an old tree, and put himself between her and the Alpha, blocking her view. Alpha Nick had obviously been involved in an altercation with someone or something. Every visible part of his body was covered in scratches or cuts, but the wound that had clearly brought down the huge Alpha was the silver bladed dagger straight through the heart. “I need to see.” Rose demanded with a voice that sounded more sure than she was. He was her father, the only parent she had, and now she could feel that he was slipping away from her. Although not yet dead, there was no way that he would survive his injuries. Connor pulled her tight into his chest. “No, you don’t” he said breathlessly.
