After the Alpha’s Death

Chapter 19

Rose sat at the table with 4 coffees, Luke and Harry. Harry text James to tell him to hurry up and that he could wear any of Holly’s clothes she had left in the room.

“So James is your friend from the academy?” She asked trying to act like she was just making small talk.

“Yes we were pretty close at the academy but haven’t kept in touch as much as we would have liked considering how close his pack is. Our Alpha just keeps us too busy for a social life.” Lewis teased.

“He seems really upset about his girlfriend.” She probed trying to sound uninterested.

“I’m not sure. He has been getting it in the neck pretty bad by his brother and I think he just overdid it last night letting loose a bit.”

“Who’s his brother.” Rose couldn’t help but ask. Harry laughed at her like she had just said something ridiculous.

“Whose brother.” James asked as he sat down taking one of the coffees and having a big drink.

“Yours.” Harry replied before Rose could stop him. She felt her cheeks flush. So far today she had been caught eying him up and now interrogating his friends about his family.

“Which one do you want to know about?” He said smiling and exposing his dimples and perfect white teeth.

“None of them. Anyway I think we should grab some food. Are you coming to the meeting at 9?”

“Yes. Is that ok? ”

“Sure. As long as you’re Alpha says it’s ok. Is he coming?” Rose replied trying to find out more about him without being too obvious.

“Probably not. I haven’t told him about it yet.” James smirked.

“He is so going to kick your ass when you get back.” Luke joked shaking his head.

“Don’t I know it. He forbid me from bringing Jenna but I did it anyway and now she will be joining this pack. He won’t be happy at loosing his first female elite warrior.”

“Wow. No wonder she was your girlfriend. You need a she-wolf who can protect your scrawny ass in a fight.” Luke joked. James laughed along with his friends but gave Rose a coy smile when they weren’t looking.

“Were you serious about each other?” Rose asked James. She hated to think about the answer but he looked much better this morning nothing like how she had after her ex had found his mate.

“No. Not really.” James confessed.

“Just serious enough to stop his brothers setting him up with you.” Luke interrupted. Rose felt so stupid for asking. She had suspected it all along. James didn’t want her as a mate. They would have to reject each other at some point to give themselves a chance to find a second chance mate but she couldn’t do that now, she didn’t want to feel the pain right now. She had so much she needed to get done before the meeting and she couldn’t do that if she had just been rejected.

“I’ve got to go.” She said quickly excusing herself.

“It’s not like that.” James tried to reason but Rose was already on her way out of the dining hall. “What the f**k did you say that for.” James scolded his friends.

“Sorry. Do you have a thing for the Alpha?”

“No, of course not, but I think you upset her.”
