Chapter 4

Rose had tried her best to sleep but had spent most of the night tossing and turning, and getting up to make notes on what she wanted to say at the alliance meeting. The pack was safe from attack for tonight but the same could not be said after the meeting tomorrow. The night of an Alpha’s funeral was sacred and no pack would seek to attack for fear of repercussions from the alliance. However once the formalities were dispensed with the same would not be true. This matter had to be addressed as soon as possible and Alpha David had arranged for a swift council meeting the following day. Not all Alpha’s would be able to attend at such short notice but they would send a delegate, a Beta, a Gamma or a future Alpha at least who could represent their pack and their interests. She was not naive enough to believe that anyone in that meeting would have anything but their own best interests at heart. Rose was not expecting to receive a particularly warm reception, she never did wherever she went, but representing her pack to a room full of egotistical, mysogenistic werewolves filled her with dread. She got out of bed and paced around her bedroom again. “Astrid are you sure about this” she asked whilst wringing her hands, trying to calm her nerves. “It is the safest way”. Astrid responded but the doubt was clear in her wolf’s voice. “Are we painting a target on our back?” Rose worried. “Better to paint it on ourselves than let others paint it on for us.” Astrid reasoned. Rose was not so sure. She paced around some more practicing the words she would speak in a few short hours. She took a long hot shower then started getting ready for the day. She dried her hair whilst wearing only her towel and contemplated todays look. Her usual business attire or casual look weren’t going to cut it today but perhaps there was something in Melody’s wardrobe that would be suitable. She groaned inwardly. How had she reduced herself to this, but if it secured the pack’s future and her safety, it was a small price to pay. Rose sat in the back of the car picking at the skin at the side of the finger nails nervously her leg swinging frantically as it sat above her other one. She adjusted the tight, low v neck top she had borrowed, trying to find some dignity. The passenger door opened and Melody climbed in, looking like she hadn't slept in the past two days either. Her tight fitting dress hugging her curves and showing off the small bump as much as possible. Rose would much rather be attending the meeting with Connor, but Melody would help her cause more. “Have you got everything you need?” Rose enquired. “I think so.” Melody replied buckling her seatbelt and resting her hands on her belly. “We are all ready now. Thank you Vincent”. She told the driver of the car. Rose usually drove everywhere herself but considering her lack of sleep and nerves, having someone else to drive wasn’t a bad idea. Also arriving in style in the chauffeur driven limo wouldn’t hurt either.
