Chapter 6

I gasped. "Now listen carefully," Maria continued. "I don't know what you did to make Moretti assign you to this role, but starting tomorrow, make sure you don't have anything to do with this wing." "What do you mean? I don't know what you're talking about," I said, wiping the blood trickling from my lip. "You don't get to question us. And nobody should know what happened here," Ann said before they turned and walked away. I looked at the floor. It was a complete mess. "Oh God... what have I done wrong this time?" I picked up the mop and started cleaning again. I spent an hour cleaning the mess Maria and Ann had made. My clothes were still drenched. With my tired body, I carried my bucket and mop down the stairs. Oh God, these stairs make me want to scream. When I reached the second floor, I dashed into my room. Good thing I had two pairs of uniforms. I got down for breakfast a few minutes late. I didn't know where the workers had their breakfast. While looking around, I almost bumped into Juliet. Clumsy me. "Hey, Julie! What are you doing here? I thought you'd already gone for breakfast." "I knew you didn't know your way around yet, so I decided to wait for you." Juliet suddenly looked at my face. "What happened?" she asked. "What?" "The cut on your lip. Where did you get it from?" Without answering, I walked toward the dining hall. Juliet hurried after me. "I know... Maria and Ann, right?" I stayed silent. "Alice, please talk to me." Tears rolled down my cheeks. "Yes... they came up there and slapped me." Juliet looked shocked. After regaining her composure, she sighed. "You don't need to worry. Just stay away from their trouble." Juliet didn't know what they had said to me. Not wanting another emotional breakdown, I forced a smile. "Which way leads to the dining hall? I'm really hungry." Leading the way, Juliet smiled. "You're really something else, girl. Even with that cut on your lip, you still have the guts to smile." "I can't keep crying," I replied. We arrived at the entrance to the dining hall. "Oh, by the way," Juliet said, suddenly stopping in her tracks. "June is coming back today." "Who's June?" I asked, confused. "Oh, dummy. I guess you don't know." She flipped her hair back with so much swagger that I burst into laughter. "What? Am I not cute?" Trying to control my laughter, I shook my head. "You know what? Just tell me. Who's June?" "Well, she's the boss's sister—the youngest child of the De Luca family." "Okay... but I think we're already late for breakfast." The moment I said that, we rushed into the dining hall. The sound of spoons clinking against plates filled the room. "Oh, here comes the queen," Ann mocked. The entire room burst into laughter. Confused, I looked at Juliet. "Here come their usual bullying words. Ignore them. Let's sit and eat." We took our seats. Unfortunately, we ended up sitting directly across from the two maniacs. "You lowlife... you think we're done with you?" Ann sneered as she stood up. Don't get angry. If you do, you'll fall sick, and nobody will take care of you. I kept repeating those words in my head. "I'm talking to you! Stand up and move away from this table," Ann ordered as she stood behind me. "Ann, what is your problem with her?" Juliet asked, standing up. "Oh, look! Her little bodyguard," Ann mocked. The room erupted in laughter again. "Stand down, Juliet, and you won't get hurt," Maria added. "If you two don't stop this, I'll report you to the boss." Ann looked at Juliet and laughed mockingly. "You wouldn't dare. Go ahead and report us if you have the guts." I saw fear flash across Juliet's face. I stood up. "Look, Ann. Maria. I don't know why you're always picking on me, but if you have a problem with me, don't drag my friend into it." I picked up my tray and walked away. Juliet followed me. We went to the backyard of the mansion. She knew a quiet resting spot there. "Wow... this place is so peaceful," I said. "Yeah. This is where I usually hide from their trouble." We sat down and ate our breakfast in silence. About an hour later, we were done. I returned to the east wing to finish my duties. I cleaned the master's bedroom. Thank God it was the last room. I quickly finished the laundry and returned the clothes to their proper places. Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I smiled. "Oh, good. I'm finally done." I picked up the cleaning bucket and mop. I glanced at the clock in the boss's room. "It's fifteen minutes past two." Just as I was about to leave, the bedroom door swung open. A pair of deep, ocean-blue eyes locked onto mine.
