The Journey Begins

Marcus was a dedicated art student at a small college in Hayesville, a quiet town near Denver. Photography was more than a hobby for him; it was a passion that he hoped would one day lead to a career showcasing his work in prestigious art galleries. Marcus spent most of his free time exploring the town, capturing photos of anything that caught his eye, from sunlit streets to the hidden beauty of abandoned buildings. He dreamed of turning these casual snapshots into a way of making a living. Raised by his mother, Ann, after losing his father to a sudden heart attack when he was just five, Marcus had a close bond with her. Ann worked tirelessly as a personal secretary for the owner of a local construction company, balancing her demanding job with raising her son. Despite the challenges, they shared a warm, content life, full of small traditions that brought them joy. One afternoon, Marcus came home from college with news that filled him with excitement. His university was planning a three-day field trip for art students, giving them a chance to practice their skills in new settings. Ann, always supportive of her son's ambitions, listened attentively as Marcus explained the details, from the itinerary to the scenic locations they would be visiting. She could see how much this opportunity meant to him, and without hesitation, she encouraged him to go. After a long day at college, Marcus headed to his room, eager to freshen up before dinner. Ann had prepared his favorite meal—chicken and rice—knowing it would be the perfect way to end his day. As they sat at the table, they offered their usual prayers, a quiet moment that felt like a ritual of gratitude between mother and son. Over dinner, Ann asked Marcus about his day, listening as he shared stories from his classes and how excited he was for the upcoming trip. As the evening drew to a close, Ann brought up the topic of money for the field trip. Marcus told her the amount that needed to be deposited, and without a second thought, she went to her room to get it. Ann opened her cupboard and pulled out not only the exact sum but also a little extra, a gesture she hoped would let Marcus enjoy the trip without any worries. When she handed him the money, his eyes lit up, and he hugged her tightly, grateful for her constant support and understanding. The following morning, Ann prepared for work and called out to Marcus, who came downstairs, ready with his backpack slung over his shoulder. Before they left, Ann asked if he had packed all the necessary medications for the trip. Marcus assured her that he had everything he needed. They shared a quick breakfast, chatting about his upcoming adventure. Afterward, Ann cleared the plates, set them in the sink, and then locked the front door as they headed out. As they walked toward the car, Marcus’s excitement bubbled over. He told Ann how thrilled everyone in his class was about the trip; the mountain they were visiting was known as one of the tallest peaks near Denver. Ann listened with a mix of pride and concern, reminding Marcus to stay cautious and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Her tone was gentle but firm, hinting at the usual motherly worry. Marcus laughed, trying to ease her concerns, promising to be alert and careful. They reached the car, and Ann drove Marcus to the university. Along the way, they talked more about the trip, with Ann giving her final bits of advice. When they arrived, she wished him luck and watched as he hurried off toward the entrance, a mix of nervousness and excitement etched on his face. Ann stayed for a moment, watching him disappear into the building before driving off to her job, still thinking about the upcoming journey and hoping everything would go smoothly. Marcus dashed to the assembly hall, where Mr. Collins, the trip organizer, was already gathering the students. The room buzzed with anticipation, with classmates exchanging stories about the gear they had brought and what they hoped to see. Mr. Collins stood at the front, eventually calling everyone to attention. He laid out important safety guidelines, emphasizing the need for everyone to stick together during the trip. With a serious tone, he reminded them that the mountainous area, while beautiful, could be dangerous, and that under no circumstances should anyone wander off alone without informing him. Joining Mr. Collins was Mr. Hawkins, another instructor who would assist with overseeing the trip. Together, they reiterated the rules and stressed the importance of safety. Marcus paid close attention, but his mind was already wandering, thinking about the kinds of photos he could capture, the rugged cliffs, the sprawling valleys, and perhaps even a hidden path or two that only his keen eye might notice. Marcus and his classmates gathered at the buses lined up for their much-anticipated trip. There were two buses, each led by one of the instructors—Mr. Collins and Mr. Hawkins. As the students mingled with excitement, Mr. Collins began calling out names, directing his group to board one bus, while Mr. Hawkins did the same with the other. Once everyone was on board, the engines roared to life, and the journey began. Inside the bus, Marcus settled into his seat next to Cory, Alex, Samantha, and Henry. They were all buzzing with anticipation, eager to escape the usual grind of schoolwork. Cory, especially, was thrilled, exclaiming how this trip would be a perfect break from the endless study sessions and textbooks they’d been buried under. Curious about what each had brought along, they asked Marcus about his gear. He shared a quick rundown of everything he packed, including his beloved camera, which he hoped would capture some stunning shots during their adventure. The chatter continued until Mr. Collins stood up, turning to face the students with a grin. “Time for some music!” he announced, pulling out a portable music player he had brought from home. With the push of a button, hip-hop beats filled the bus, instantly lifting the energy. Laughter, claps, and even some impromptu dancing broke out among the students, and the bus was suddenly alive with the carefree spirit of youth. For a moment, it felt like they had left all their worries behind. After a couple of hours on the road, the bus slowed down and came to a stop at a small diner. Mr. Collins informed the students that this was their lunch break before they began their trek up the mountain. As they stepped off the bus, they were joined by Mr. Hawkins and the other group, who had been following close behind. Everyone was in high spirits as they made their way into the diner, a cozy, rustic place that seemed like a relic from a simpler time. Inside, the students took their seats, ordered their meals, and enjoyed some downtime together. Conversations flowed freely, with jokes, stories, and even a few travel tips being exchanged. Marcus took out his camera, snapping a few candid shots of his friends as they laughed, capturing moments that he thought might be worth remembering. After they finished their meals, Mr. Collins reminded everyone to make sure they had everything they needed before they got back on the bus. Recharged and ready for the next part of their journey, the students returned to their buses, finding their seats as the convoy prepared to move again. As the landscape outside began to change, with cityscapes giving way to rolling hills and dense forests, Mr. Collins spoke over the microphone, letting them know that they were about an hour away from their destination. “Get ready because once we arrive, we’re heading straight into the trek. Hope you all brought your energy!”
