CHAPTER 3: SECRETS AND PROMISES

1039 Words
The secret relationship between Mia Mendoza and David Mondragon lasted for nearly three months before anyone became suspicious. Three months of stolen moments. Three months of secret meetings. Three months of pretending they were strangers whenever they appeared in public. And three months of falling hopelessly in love. Every meeting carried a risk. Every conversation carried a consequence. Yet neither of them cared anymore. Love had a way of making people reckless. On a cool Friday evening, Mia sat in the private garden behind one of her family's luxury hotels. The location had become their favorite meeting place. Hidden from reporters. Hidden from relatives. Hidden from enemies. At least that was what they believed. David arrived a few minutes later. The moment Mia saw him, she smiled. It was becoming a dangerous habit. "You're late." David sat beside her. "Only five minutes." "Seven." "You counted?" "Of course." He laughed softly. "I should be worried." "You should." For a moment, neither spoke. The city lights shimmered in the distance. Everything felt peaceful. Something both of them rarely experienced. David reached for her hand. Mia allowed him to hold it. The gesture felt natural now. Comforting. As though they belonged together. Perhaps they did. "I have something to tell you," David said. Mia looked at him. His expression had suddenly become serious. "What is it?" "My grandfather wants me to get married." Her smile disappeared. The words struck harder than she expected. Married. The possibility had always existed. David was the heir to a billionaire empire. Sooner or later, his family would try arranging a marriage. The thought made her chest tighten. David quickly squeezed her hand. "Not because I want to." Mia remained silent. "I told them no." She finally looked at him. "And?" "And they weren't happy." That was an understatement. The Mondragons were known for controlling nearly every aspect of their children's lives. Especially when it involved marriage. David knew his family wanted an alliance. A powerful union. A strategic relationship. Not love. Never love. Mia sighed. "My family would do the same." The reality was painful. Their love existed in a world where business mattered more than feelings. Money mattered more than happiness. Power mattered more than loyalty. Yet neither wanted to let go. "I love you." The words escaped David before he could stop them. Silence followed. A heavy silence. Mia stared at him. Her heart racing. Her thoughts spinning. He had said it. For the first time. I love you. The words felt terrifying. And beautiful. David looked nervous. For perhaps the first time in his life. Mia smiled. Then she whispered, "I love you too." The moment felt perfect. Like something from a dream. Neither noticed the figure hidden behind a nearby hedge. Daniel Mondragon. Watching. Listening. Hating. His jealousy had become unbearable. Every secret meeting. Every smile. Every touch. Every moment Mia shared with David felt like theft. In Daniel's mind, she should have belonged to him. The obsession was no longer healthy. It was becoming dangerous. Very dangerous. Across the city, Susan Mendoza was attending a private dinner with Mark and Uncle Elmo. The three conspirators sat alone inside a luxurious restaurant. No reporters. No witnesses. No interruptions. Only business. Only secrets. "How serious is the relationship?" Elmo asked. Susan took a sip of wine. "Very serious." Mark frowned. "That could become a problem." "It already is." Because Susan understood something nobody else realized. If Mia married David, she would become even more powerful. More influential. More difficult to remove. And Susan desperately wanted control of the Mendoza fortune. The same fortune she had secretly pursued since the deaths of Mia's parents. The same fortune she believed belonged to her. "We need a solution," Mark said. Susan nodded. A cold smile appeared on her face. "I have one." Neither man asked what she meant. Experience had taught them that Susan's solutions usually involved destruction. Back in the garden, Mia rested her head on David's shoulder. The future felt uncertain. But for the first time in years, she felt hopeful. "What do you think our child would look like?" David blinked. "Our child?" Mia laughed. "I'm speaking hypothetically." "Right." David pretended to think. "Hopefully they get your intelligence." "And your kindness." "Definitely not your stubbornness." Mia hit his arm. He laughed. For a few precious minutes, they allowed themselves to dream. A future together. A family. A life without hatred. A life without war. Neither realized that fate had already chosen another path. Hours later, they finally prepared to leave. David stopped her before she entered her car. "Mia." She turned. "What?" He looked nervous again. Something that always amused her. "I mean it." "What?" "Everything." His voice softened. "The future." "The family." "The marriage." "You." Mia felt tears threaten to form. Not from sadness. From happiness. A rare kind of happiness. One she had never experienced before. She stepped closer. Then kissed him. A simple kiss. A gentle promise. A silent declaration of love. When they finally pulled apart, both were smiling. Neither wanted the night to end. But eventually it did. Mia climbed into her car. David watched her leave. For the first time in his life, he felt certain about something. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Unfortunately, not everyone shared that dream. In another part of the city, Daniel sat alone in darkness. Photographs of Mia covered the walls. Hundreds of them. Magazine covers. News articles. Business reports. Public appearances. His obsession had consumed him completely. And now it was feeding something far more dangerous. Hatred. He stared at a photograph of Mia smiling beside David. Then slowly tore it in half. One piece showed David. The other showed Mia. Daniel kept Mia's half. And burned David's. As flames consumed the photograph, a smile appeared on his face. A disturbing smile. A smile that promised disaster. Because deep inside, Daniel had made a choice. If Mia could never belong to him, then nobody would have her. Not even his own brother. And somewhere far away, Susan Mendoza was making plans of her own. Plans involving betrayal. Murder. And a wedding that would one day end in blood. The countdown to tragedy had already begun.
