A plainclothes detective and uniformed constable arrived at their apartment the next morning. Mark and Annie threw open their door at the loud knocking and the demands from the constable to open up. The officers showed their ID: Detective B.N. Hussein and Corporal Tom McKenna of the Edmonton Police Service. A lawyer wasn’t necessary at this stage, Mark and Annie were assured. This was preliminary, a ferreting out of the facts. No charges were being laid. Annie was a witness. Mark suggested to Annie in a low voice that anything they said could be used against them. Annie offered the officers some tea. They declined. The detective flipped open a laptop and began to take notes. The questioning took place in their living room, with Chuckles oddly quiet and asleep in the corner on his rug. T
