Maria Mia, my friend, was late for her shift today at Squisito, and I covered for her. Working those extra two hours took me from a little tired to drained. All I want is a hot dinner in my belly and a warm bath. I walk outside the busy restaurant and weigh my options about calling back my mother. My ride home is only a few minutes away, and I know I will not be done with the phone call. My mother will interrogate me for not going to Gabriel’s engagement party. But what can I tell her? “Oh, sorry, mom, but my waitressing job will not give me so many days off. Oh, why do I work, you ask? Well, my estranged husband abandoned me the day after our wedding. He left me his old love nest to live in all by myself. Don’t worry, mom, I was able to sell one of my designer bags to buy groceries.” N
