*CRASHING INTO YOU* *Chapter 2: Waking Up* Beeping. That was the first thing I heard. Then the smell. Antiseptic. Hospital. I tried to move. My head felt like it had been hit with a brick. “Don’t,” a nurse said quickly. “You’re in the hospital. You were in an accident.” I opened my eyes. White ceiling. IV in my hand. Right. 3rd Ave. The car. The brake lights. Grandma’s voice in my head: _“Are you waiting for the angels to bring you a husband?”_ Idiot. I pushed myself up a little. Pain shot through my temple. “Where’s my phone?” I asked. My voice was hoarse. “You don't need to worry,” the nurse said. “You were saved by a gentleman.” I nodded and fell back against the pillows. The door opened. Footsteps. Not a nurse. Too slow. Too heavy. A man in a black suit. Same one from the car. Rain still on his shoulders. Ethan Cole. He looked at me once, then at the monitor, then back at me. “You’re awake,” he said. Flat. No relief. No worry. Just a statement. “Was it you who saved me?” I asked quietly. “Yes.” He pulled out a card and set it on my bedside table. “If you need anything. For the bills. Or the police statement.” Then he turned to leave. “Wait,” I said before I could stop myself. He stopped but didn’t turn around. “Thank you,” I said quietly. He didn’t answer. The door closed behind him. I picked up the card. *Ethan Cole. CEO, Cole Group.* No number. Just an email. Great. The man who saved me and couldn’t care less. And my head still hurt ---
