For… getting rid of Jack.” Ethan glanced at me. “Was he that bad?” “He said he wants a stay-at-home wife to bear kids.” I rolled my eyes. “I was forced to come by my grandma. She thinks I work too much.” He huffed a laugh. “Grandmas.” Then he turned to me fully. “Marry me.” I blinked. “What?” “Marry me,” he said again. Calm. Like he was discussing the weather. “It’ll solve your problem. You won’t have to go on blind dates again. And my grandfather won’t pester me again.” My mouth opened. Closed. “Ethan, I—” “Three days,” he cut me off before I could reject him. “I’m giving you three days to think about it. Don’t answer me in a hurry. Think about it first.” “I don’t think—” “Think about it, Noelle,” he said. Firm, but not unkind. Then he added, softer: “Just think about it.” I stared at him. Ethan Cole. The man no one talks to. Asking me to marry him. To get his grandpa off his back. To get my grandma off mine. The car stopped. My house. He got out with me. Handed me a card with his number. “I’ll be waiting for your reply,” he said. Then he got back in and drove off. I stood there holding the card. Marry me. In three days. ---
