*CRASHING INTO YOU *
*Chapter 4: Lisa*
My apartment was quiet. Too quiet.
I dropped my bag on the couch and kicked off my shoes. My head was still pounding.
Before I could even sit down, my phone rang.
*Lisa Wilds*
Calling for the 5th time today.
I answered. “Hey.”
“NOELLE BROOKS!” Lisa yelled. “I’ve been calling you for 3 days! Are you dead? Are you in jail? Did you finally run away to become a nun?”
I laughed and immediately regretted it. Pain shot through my temple.
“I’m fine, Lis. I’m home.”
There was a pause.
“...Home? Why weren’t you at work? Why weren’t you answering?”
I sighed and sat on the couch.
“I got into an accident, okay? 3 days ago. On 3rd Ave.”
“What?!” Her voice went up 3 octaves. “Are you okay?? What happened??”
“It’s fine. I’m fine. Concussion, 6 stitches. Someone pulled me out and took me to the hospital.”
“Who? Did you get their number? Insurance? The police? Noelle talk to me!”
“A guy. Ethan Cole.” I said his name and it felt weird in my mouth.
“He paid the bills. Sent his assistant to drop me home today. That’s all.”
Lisa went quiet. Then:
“...Ethan Cole. As in Cole Group Ethan Cole?”
“Yes.”
“Noelle.”
“What?”
“You were in an accident, knocked out, and the richest man in the state saved you and paid your bills and you’re telling me like it’s nothing??”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not like that. He was cold. He didn’t even stay to talk.”
“Cold or not, he saved your life.”
I didn’t answer that.
“Are you really okay? Headache? Dizziness?”
“Just tired. And my grandma would’ve had a heart attack if she knew.”
“Good thing she doesn’t.” Lisa said. “Rest. I’m coming over tomorrow with food. And we’re talking about Mr. Cold CEO.”
I smiled. “Fine. See you.”
We hung up.
I stared at my phone for a second, then dialed the hospital.
“Hi, this is Dr. Noelle Brooks from ER. I need to file for medical leave. 2 weeks.”
“Of course, Dr. Brooks. We’ve already been notified. Take care and rest.”
Rest. Right.
Like I could rest with _Ethan Cole_ paying my bills and Lisa planning an interrogation.
I tossed the phone on the couch.
Someone saved me.
Someone paid my bills.
And I still didn’t know why.
