Vows Without Love

1090 Words
The silence inside St. Michael's Cathedral seemed to stretch endlessly as Isabella stood before Damian Blackwood. The music had faded into the background, and the hundreds of guests who had filled the pews moments earlier with cheerful conversation now watched the couple with eager anticipation. Every eye in the magnificent hall was fixed on them, waiting for the exchange of vows that would officially unite two lives. The priest smiled kindly, unaware of the tension quietly building beneath the polished surface of the ceremony. Having presided over countless weddings throughout his career, he recognized the nervousness that often settled over brides and grooms before they spoke their promises. He assumed Damian's silence came from the weight of the moment rather than anything more troubling. Turning first to Isabella, the priest nodded gently. "Miss Carter, would you like to share your vows?" For a brief moment, Isabella's fingers tightened around the bouquet she was holding. She had rewritten those vows dozens of times over the past month, never because she struggled to find the right words, but because no collection of promises seemed large enough to express what Damian meant to her. Three years of shared hardship, sacrifice, and quiet hope could never be captured in a few simple sentences. She lifted her eyes to meet his. His face remained as calm as ever, yet there was a distance in his gaze that unsettled her. It was the same expression he wore during important business negotiations, one that concealed every emotion behind an impenetrable wall. Once, she had believed she was one of the few people capable of seeing beyond that wall. Looking at him now, she wondered whether she had only imagined that privilege. Drawing a slow breath, Isabella began to speak. "When I first met you, everyone saw a man whose company was collapsing. Newspapers predicted your failure almost every week, investors questioned your decisions, and people whispered that the Blackwood family would never recover from the crisis. I remember wondering how someone so young could carry so much responsibility without allowing it to break him." A faint murmur spread among the guests. Most of them had never witnessed that difficult chapter of Damian's life. To the public, he had always appeared invincible. "But what I remember most isn't your determination," Isabella continued, her voice growing steadier with each word. "It's your kindness. Even when the company struggled to pay its bills, you refused to dismiss loyal employees simply to protect your own reputation. You carried every burden yourself because you believed the people who trusted you deserved better. That was the man I fell in love with." Arthur Blackwood slowly lowered his head, his weathered face filled with emotion. He knew every word she spoke was true. Few people had remained beside Damian during those painful years, but Isabella had never once considered leaving. "I never loved you because you became successful," she said softly, her eyes never leaving Damian's face. "I loved you long before the headlines called you a genius. I loved you when failure seemed inevitable, when the future was uncertain, and when all either of us possessed was hope. If today marks the beginning of our marriage, then I promise to stand beside you with the same faith tomorrow, next year, and for the rest of my life. Whether life gives us joy or sorrow, success or failure, I will choose you every single day." When she finished, the cathedral remained silent for several heartbeats. Several guests quietly wiped tears from their eyes. Even reporters who had attended merely to cover another billionaire wedding found themselves unexpectedly moved by the sincerity of her words. There had been no rehearsed performance, no dramatic declarations intended to impress the audience. Isabella had simply spoken from her heart. The priest smiled warmly before turning toward Damian. "Mr. Blackwood, your vows." Every gaze shifted toward the groom. Damian remained motionless. His expression did not change, nor did he immediately respond. He simply looked at Isabella with an unreadable calm that made the silence increasingly uncomfortable. Seconds slipped by, and whispers began to ripple through the congregation. Some guests exchanged puzzled glances, while others assumed he had become emotional and was struggling to find the right words. Only Arthur noticed the subtle tightening of Damian's jaw. He knew that look. It was the expression Damian wore whenever he had already made a decision that no one else could change. The priest cleared his throat politely. "Mr. Blackwood?" Damian finally drew a slow breath. "I'm sorry." His voice was quiet, yet it carried effortlessly through the cathedral. "I can't make promises I know I won't keep." The smile on the priest's face slowly disappeared. Confusion spread across the front rows as the guests struggled to understand what they had just heard. Damian turned fully toward Isabella, and for the first time that morning, he looked directly into her eyes. "There is something everyone deserves to know before this ceremony continues." A heavy silence settled over the cathedral. Isabella felt her heartbeat quicken. She searched his face desperately, hoping this was simply another unexpected surprise, perhaps an explanation for the strange distance that had grown between them over the past month. Instead, Damian's next words shattered every illusion she had been clinging to. "This marriage is not happening because I fell in love." The temperature in the cathedral seemed to drop. Arthur slowly closed his eyes. Victoria Blackwood lowered her gaze without saying a word. Damian continued speaking with the same calm voice he used during board meetings, each sentence delivered with careful precision. "My grandfather has spent years asking me to marry Isabella. He believed that loyalty would eventually become love and that she was the only woman capable of understanding the responsibilities that come with carrying the Blackwood name. Out of respect for him, I agreed to stand here today." He paused briefly before continuing. "But respect and love are not the same thing." Every guest remained frozen in stunned silence. Damian looked at Isabella once more, and although his expression remained composed, his words carried a cruelty no one had expected. "I owe you honesty more than I owe you comforting lies." "I don't love you, Isabella." "And I don't believe I ever will." The bouquet slipped slightly in Isabella's trembling hands as the world around her blurred into painful silence. Every dream she had carefully built over the past three years collapsed in a single heartbeat, yet the greatest humiliation of her life had only just begun...
