The grand doors of St. Michael's Cathedral opened slowly, allowing a wave of icy winter air to sweep through the hall. Outside, reporters stood shoulder to shoulder behind security barricades, unaware that the story they had been waiting to cover had already become something far more dramatic than anyone could have imagined. Inside, however, no one moved. The guests remained frozen in their seats, uncertain whether they had just witnessed the end of a wedding or the beginning of a scandal that would dominate New York's headlines for weeks.
Arthur Blackwood slowly drew a deep breath, forcing himself to remain calm despite the storm raging inside him. The bodyguard's warning refused to leave his mind. If those men had truly begun searching for Isabella again, then every minute she remained exposed placed her in greater danger. For years, he had believed he was protecting her by keeping her identity hidden. Now, he wasn't so sure. The secret he had guarded for more than two decades was beginning to crack, and once the truth escaped, there would be no way to bury it again.
He looked across the cathedral toward Isabella. She stood quietly near the altar, her wedding bouquet resting loosely in her hands. Only an hour earlier, those flowers had symbolized hope, new beginnings, and the promise of a lifetime together. Now they looked painfully out of place, much like the wedding dress she still wore. It was impossible to imagine how heavy her heart must feel, yet she refused to collapse beneath the humiliation. There was sadness in her eyes, but there was also a quiet strength that Arthur admired more than ever.
Most people believed true strength revealed itself through anger or revenge. Isabella was proving the opposite. She had every reason to shout at Damian, to demand an explanation before everyone gathered inside the cathedral, or to leave in tears and allow the world to witness her heartbreak. Instead, she stood with remarkable dignity, refusing to let pain destroy the kindness that had always defined her.
Arthur had seen many extraordinary people throughout his lifetime. He had negotiated with presidents, built one of the largest business empires in America, and watched ambitious men sacrifice everything for wealth and power. Yet very few possessed the quiet courage Isabella displayed in that single moment. It reminded him so much of another woman he had known many years ago that his chest tightened with emotion.
Damian finally turned away from Claire and walked toward Isabella. Every guest instinctively fell silent again, wondering whether he intended to repair the damage he had caused or make it even worse. His footsteps echoed softly across the polished marble floor until he stopped only a few feet from the woman who had become his wife in everything except his heart.
For several moments, neither of them spoke.
Damian had always believed he was a man capable of making difficult decisions without hesitation. Every major business victory he achieved had required sacrifices, and he had never allowed emotions to interfere with logic. Yet standing before Isabella now felt different. Looking into her calm eyes, he experienced an unfamiliar discomfort that no boardroom negotiation had ever produced.
"I'm sorry," he said again, his voice quieter than before. "No matter what happens after today, I'll make sure you're taken care of. You won't have to worry about money, a home, or your future. I'll give you anything you need."
The words were sincere.
Unfortunately, they were also the wrong words.
Isabella looked at him for a long moment before a faint, almost heartbreaking smile appeared on her lips.
"Do you really think that's what I've wanted all these years?"
Damian frowned slightly.
"You think I stayed beside you because I hoped one day you'd make me rich?" she continued softly. "When your company was fighting to survive, there were nights we didn't leave the office until sunrise. There were days when you forgot to eat because another crisis demanded your attention. Back then, you couldn't promise me luxury or security because you weren't sure you could even save your company. If money had been my goal, I would have walked away long before Blackwood Group became successful."
Every word settled heavily between them.
"I didn't fall in love with the billionaire everyone admires today," Isabella said, her voice steady despite the sadness behind it. "I fell in love with the man who refused to give up even when the whole world expected him to fail. That was enough for me."
Damian lowered his eyes.
For the first time since the ceremony began, he found himself unable to answer.
Deep inside, he knew she was right.
She had never asked him for expensive gifts.
She had never used his name to gain influence.
She had never demanded anything except honesty.
And somehow, honesty had become the very thing that broke her heart.
Arthur watched the exchange with growing regret. Years ago, he had believed love would naturally grow between them if only Damian gave Isabella a chance. Instead, his decision had trapped two good people inside a marriage neither of them truly understood. One loved too deeply, while the other remained imprisoned by memories of a woman he had never managed to forget.
Before anyone could speak again, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the entrance.
Another member of Blackwood's security team hurried inside, his usually composed expression replaced by unmistakable urgency. He walked directly toward Arthur and leaned close enough that no one else could hear his report.
"Chairman," he whispered, "our investigators followed the men who were asking about Miss Isabella. They escaped before we could question them, but we found something they left behind."
Arthur's expression hardened immediately.
"What was it?"
The guard carefully removed a worn leather wallet from his coat pocket and handed it to him.
"It appears to belong to one of them."
Arthur opened it slowly.
Inside was very little.
A small amount of cash.
A business card with no name.
And an old photograph.
The moment Arthur saw the picture, his breathing stopped.
The photograph showed a little girl no older than four years old standing between a smiling young couple. Time had faded the colors, but their faces remained clear enough to recognize.
The little girl...
Was Isabella.
Arthur's hands trembled almost imperceptibly as painful memories rushed back after more than twenty years. He remembered the night the little girl disappeared. He remembered the desperate phone calls, the endless search, and the promise he had made to protect the truth until the day she was finally ready to learn it.
That day had arrived far sooner than he had ever expected.
Carefully closing the wallet, Arthur lifted his eyes toward Isabella. She was still speaking quietly with Damian, completely unaware that only a few feet away, the past she had never known was preparing to walk back into her life.
Arthur silently made a decision.
He could no longer keep the truth from her.
No matter how dangerous it might become, Isabella deserved to know who she really was.
Because somewhere in New York, someone had already discovered that the missing child they had searched for over twenty years...
...was finally within reach.
