POV: Valerie
“You made the right decision, Valerie. You could never win Sarah; she is smarter than you.” The driver told me, chuckling softly. It was that moment that I realized that the driver is Justin. I knew he was working with my sister, so I had to be more careful around him. I texted the number the cop gave me and I told him about Justin being the driver.
He texted me back immediately, assuring me that he had everything under control and I shouldn’t be scared. I tried to remain calm, but being in this car with him and seeing the smug look on his face made me so mad. The only crime I committed was refusing to sleep with him. That’s why he hates me so much.
“You won’t get away with this, Justin. My sister is a user. She will use you and get rid of you, just like she got rid of her husband and me. You won’t be an exception; you will be tossed aside, just like everyone else.” I told him furiously, trying to speak my mind without infuriating him further.
“You are such a fool, Val. A dumb fool, that’s what you are.” He laughed.
“Your sister might be using someone, my love, but it’s certainly not me. I’m too smart to be played for a fool, and you are so damn stupid to think that your stupid sister planned all this. This is all my plan; I’ve been working on these plans for so long. If you didn’t turn me down, we could be doing this together, building our legacy and forming a strong alliance.” He sighed.
“Oh well, it’s all the same to me. I got his girl, and I will get his wealth someday.” He told me, making me gasp in shock as I heard what they were planning for Dominic. They are going to hurt him and steal his money. I have no way of warning him when my life is in danger.
“Why are you telling me all this? Aren’t you scared that I might expose you and Sarah before you carry out your plans and hurt Dominic?” I asked him. But he laughed at me once more, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
“It’s cute that you think you will live to tell the story. I should applaud you for being fearless in the face of death, my love. But trust me, you will be dead before the end of the day,” he said pointedly, as if death is something I should look forward to. I shivered in fear when I saw the cold look in his eyes through the rearview mirror. He meant every word, and I was so scared to be alone in this car with him.
He played a few songs on his car Bluetooth device and sang along, singing so loudly like a lottery winner. I wanted to try texting the cop guy again, but Justin kept looking at me through the rearview mirror, checking to make sure I remained calm and compliant. If I made one wrong move, or if he ever saw me holding my phone, he could get furious and decide to kill me right here and now. I couldn’t do this to myself; I had to live for my child.
“What are you thinking about, my love? You think you can escape before I kill you? Are you thinking of a way out?” he chuckled softly.
“Please don’t kill me, Justin. Forgive me, please. Spare my life, and I’ll forever be grateful.” I begged him. He laughed even harder, stepping on the gas to move even faster.
“I don’t need you to be grateful, Val. I need you to sleep with me; I practically begged for it, just like you’re begging for your life now. But you kept it away from me, making me look like a damn fool!” he yelled angrily, punching the steering wheel to show the extent of his anger.
“Today, I will get what I have always wanted from you. I will have my way with you and then put a bullet in your brain and feed you to the sharks. How’s that for forgiveness?” he asked me, laughing even more.
At this point, I knew there was no reasoning with this lunatic. What was I even thinking when I begged him to forgive me? By now I should know that he is not just unreasonable but stupid as well. At this point, only my cop friend could save me. He was my only hope for survival. So I dialed his number and put the call on mute so Justin couldn’t hear it.
“Please don’t hurt me, Justin. Don’t r**e and kill me, please. I promise to be good, I’ll leave and never come back. I’ll never say anything to Travis, I promise. I’ll go to my maternal home; I’ll live out the rest of my life away from you all. Please.” I begged Justin. But I said it loud enough for the cop guy to know I was in real danger. Justin kept laughing and threatening me, unaware of the person on the other end of the phone.
A few minutes later, our car was ambushed by some strange vehicles, and Justin was pulled out roughly and thrown out of the car. They made it look like an attack by angry mobs who wanted me dead for killing Basil. The crowd was too much, and Justin couldn’t get to me because he was being held back by some selected people that were paid to hold him back and give me a chance to escape.
“Take off your clothes. We have to make this look real.” The cop guy said to me, helping me take off all my clothes and handing me a guy’s outfit and cap to wear and blend in with the crowd. While I put on the guy’s outfit, which I assumed was his because it smelled nice like him, I spotted a dead body on the floor that had the same hair color as me. Someone was already putting my clothes on the dead body, and I realized that he was faking my death and giving me a fresh start with a new identity.
I was snuck into another car with my passport and other documents. He assured me that the rest of my belongings would be sent to me after a few months. Then he gave me his brother’s number and some money to get me out of the country. The money was so much that I had to look at him strangely, wondering how a cop got to have such money.
“It’s a long story. And hopefully, one day, we will sit over a bottle of wine and talk about it,” he told me, chuckling softly. The car pulled over at a garage with no security cameras, and we got into a different car and continued the journey to a private airport where a private plane was already waiting for me.
“A private plane? Who are you?” I asked him, earning a soft chuckle from him.
“I’m just a concerned friend who believes you are innocent and wishes to help you escape death.” He said, making me gasp in shock as I stared at him with eyes as wide as saucers.
“This plane will take you to China first. Then my friend in China will pick you up and take you to my family’s house where you will stay with my brother until you are able to stand on your feet again.” He told me.
“You will be safe with my family, and I will make sure we leave no clues behind.” He assured me, urging me to get on the plane faster so he could return to handle the aftermath of the mob attack he orchestrated. He took my gadgets from me and handed me new ones before turning to run down to the car, leaving me with the air hostess. She led me into the plane and had me buckle up before the plane took off.
“Master Dominic wants you to get rested before we arrive in China.” She told me as she helped me settle in a private room inside the plane. My stomach grumbled when I saw the air hostess coming to me with a plate of food. She smiled and served me a delicious meal that made me forget that a few hours ago, I was in a car with a lunatic who threatened my life. I was traveling to a strange place where I knew no one. But something tells me that I am going to be okay.
As I napped on the plane, I thought of Travis, and I felt so bad that someone he called his best friend would be plotting to steal everything from him. He had worked so hard to build a name for himself, and yet someone was plotting his downfall. I wanted to ignore it and just move on with my life, but something in me wouldn’t let me forget about him.
