Lily couldn’t focus for the rest of the day. ‎Her hands moved through files, her fingers answered phone calls, but her mind was somewhere else. Every time she heard footsteps outside the office, her heart jumped. Every time the door opened, she looked up without meaning to. ‎Alexander Kane. ‎She had not expected him to still be there. Not after that brief moment earlier. Not after realizing who he really was. ‎She told herself it didn’t matter. He was just a visitor. An important one, yes, but still just passing through. People like him didn’t notice people like her. They moved on quickly. They forgot. ‎But when the office door opened again and Alexander walked out with her manager, Lily felt her chest tighten. ‎He looked different now. ‎More distant. More controlled. His face was calm, unreadable. The warmth from earlier was gone, replaced by the quiet authority he carried so easily. He spoke in a low voice, nodding as her manager explained something she couldn’t hear. ‎Then, without warning, Alexander’s eyes found hers. ‎Lily looked away immediately. ‎Her heart beat fast, and she hated herself for it. This was foolish. Dangerous. She didn’t belong anywhere near his world. ‎Alexander noticed the way she avoided him. ‎It surprised him. ‎Most people tried to catch his attention. They smiled too much. They stood straighter. They waited for him to look their way. Lily did the opposite. She shrank into herself, like she wanted to disappear. ‎And for some reason, that made him curious. ‎The meeting ended quickly. Alexander shook hands, said polite goodbyes, and headed toward the door. Lily thought that would be the end of it. ‎She was wrong. ‎“Lily,” her manager called. “Can you help Mr. Kane with the documents he needs? Just a moment.” ‎Her stomach dropped. ‎She stood slowly, forcing her legs to move. “Of course.” ‎Alexander turned, surprised again. He hadn’t known her name before. Hearing it now felt strangely personal. ‎They stood close. Too close. ‎Lily handed him the folder, her fingers brushing his by accident. She pulled back quickly. ‎“Everything you asked for is in there,” she said. ‎“Thank you,” Alexander replied. “You’re very organized.” ‎She nodded, unsure what to say. ‎For a second, it felt like he wanted to say more. His mouth opened slightly, then closed. He stepped back. ‎“I hope you have a good evening,” he said. ‎“You too,” she answered. ‎And then he was gone. ‎Lily let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. ‎That night, Alexander attended a charity dinner he had no interest in skipping. ‎The room was full of people dressed in elegance and money. Crystal glasses clinked. Soft music played. Cameras flashed. Alexander stood beside a woman in a long silver dress, her hand resting lightly on his arm. ‎Her name was Vanessa Clarke. ‎Vanessa was beautiful, confident, and well-known. She came from an influential family, and the media loved her. To the public, she was Alexander Kane’s girlfriend. To his board, she was a perfect match. ‎To Alexander, she was… safe. ‎“You’ve been quiet tonight,” Vanessa said, smiling up at him. “Another long day?” ‎“Yes,” he replied. ‎“You work too much,” she said gently. “One day you’ll have to slow down.” ‎He gave a small smile but didn’t answer. ‎Across the room, reporters whispered and pointed. Alexander and Vanessa were familiar faces together. Predictable. Comfortable. Everyone assumed marriage was just a matter of time. ‎Alexander assumed it too. ‎Until, for no clear reason, Lily’s face appeared in his mind. ‎Her honest eyes. The way she looked at him like he was normal. The way she pulled away so fast, like she was afraid of him. ‎It bothered him. ‎The next morning, Lily walked into work to find the office buzzing. ‎“Did you see the news?” one coworker whispered. ‎“Which one?” another asked. ‎“Kane Holdings CEO,” she said. “He was at a charity event last night. With his girlfriend.” ‎Lily didn’t mean to listen, but she did. ‎Someone pulled out a phone and passed it around. Lily glanced at the screen before she could stop herself. ‎There he was. ‎Alexander Kane. ‎Tall. Calm. Perfect. ‎And beside him stood a stunning woman, her hand resting on his arm like it belonged there. ‎Lily’s chest felt tight. ‎“Oh wow,” someone said. “They look good together.” ‎“Of course they do,” another replied. “Men like him don’t date regular girls.” ‎Lily looked away, her face warm with embarrassment. She felt foolish. She hadn’t even realized she was hoping for something. ‎Hoping for what, exactly? ‎She didn’t know him. He didn’t know her. That brief connection meant nothing. ‎So why did it hurt? ‎Later that day, Alexander returned to the office building unexpectedly. Lily wasn’t warned this time. She was refilling the printer when she felt a presence behind her. ‎“Hello, Lily.” ‎She froze. ‎She turned slowly. “Mr. Kane.” ‎“Alexander,” he corrected gently. ‎She hesitated. “Alexander.” ‎He noticed the change in her tone. Something was different. Her smile was gone. Her guard was up. ‎“Are you alright?” he asked. ‎“Yes,” she said quickly. “I’m fine.” ‎He didn’t believe her. ‎Before he could respond, Vanessa’s voice sounded behind him. ‎“There you are,” she said warmly, slipping her arm through his. “I was wondering where you disappeared to.” ‎Lily felt like the ground shifted beneath her. ‎Vanessa looked at her, then smiled politely. “You must be one of the staff.” ‎“Yes,” Lily replied. “I work here.” ‎“Nice to meet you,” Vanessa said, her smile calm, confident. “Alexander talks about this place often.” ‎Alexander stiffened slightly. ‎He hadn’t expected Vanessa to show up. He hadn’t planned this moment. ‎“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “this is Lily. She’s been helping with the files.” ‎Vanessa nodded. “Well, thank you for taking such good care of him.” ‎Lily forced a smile. “It’s my job.” ‎The words tasted bitter. ‎Alexander watched Lily step away, her shoulders tense, her steps quick. He felt something twist inside him. He hadn’t meant to hurt her. But he had. ‎And Lily, walking back to her desk, felt tears sting her eyes. ‎She finally understood. ‎Alexander Kane did not belong to her world. ‎And she did not belong in his. ‎But understanding didn’t stop her heart from aching. ‎And Alexander, standing beside a woman everyone expected him to love, realized something unsettling. ‎For the first time in years, his heart was not following the plan. ‎
