Chapter 12

"Emerald..." The voice was coming from above her, it seemed distant. She suddenly woke up, her mind registering and processing her surroundings. She was in the surgery room, She suddenly looked towards her legs and saw that they had put back her underwear. Had it happened or not? She looked around at the nurses and her unuttered question was answered. "Yes, you can go to the rest room now." They helped her up, She was still dizzy and in a daze. How long had she been out? She had a few more questions but she didn't want to talk. She was still processing whatever had happened. Was it always like this when people went for abortions? Did they always make quick decisions like the growing infant in the womb had no choice? Did they always come out of the operation room happy and relieved or sad and regretful? They put her on a wheelchair and pushed her towards the resting room. Marek was there, sitting on the bed just the way she had left him. He looked up from his phone and got up immediately when he saw them. He carried her from the wheelchair to the bed and She immediately curled into him as he laid there with her. He didn't say anything for a while, just laid there holding her, his hands soothingly moving up and down her arms. Tears started flowing involuntarily down her face. She felt like the worst sinner ever, She felt that her world had come to an end, She felt dirty and repulsive. She felt very doubtful of her decision. But she stayed silent through the turmoil even as She drifted off to sleep. Marek sat on the bed after they took Emerald to the surgery room. He was a man who has been through a lot and has seen a lot of things. He didn't look shaken outwardly, but inside, his mind was a jumble. Fifteen minutes later, that had felt like hours, they wheeled Emerald back in. She looked dazed, but She had a smile on her face when their eyes met. 'wtf! Why would She smile at a moment like this?' He got up immediately and carried her from the chair to the bed. He laid down with her and she immediately curled up into him, like she craved a presence beside her. She was quiet and he didn't want to spook her by asking all the wrong questions. He had a knack for upsetting women. He laid there with her and a few minutes later She drifted off to sleep. The nurse said they could stay there until evening if they wanted. Great, they had all the time in the world. He pulled himself up a little and she held him tighter as he moved, he kept his left hand around hers and leant on his right elbow then looked down at her. A lot of thoughts were going through his mind as he studied her. She looked calm after what she had just gone through. Had She done this before? He remembered Xiao hui saying what a Wild girl She was, drunken nights, one night stands, crazy dancing. Why was she like that? He knew people who usually were always happy and careless were hiding something and by doing crazy things, they kept themselves occupied. He sighed and smiled. Life had it's ways of twisting everything. Now what the hell would this even mean? He never believed in coincidences. Everything always happened for a reason. He wondered what the reason was that he had come to China, see about a business or see his ex girlfriend, then this girl had stepped in his way. This was like a sabotage, his plans were all jaggled. He had hoped to move around with maybe an Asian woman, since he was in China? He suddenly felt a stir and looked down, he hadn't realised his eyes had wondered off. Emerald was looking up at him with a smile. "What are you thinking?" She asked quietly. "Nothing, go back to sleep." He shrugged and smiled at her. "You must be wondering what the hell you're doing here, right?" "Not really."He replied quickly. Liar... His subconscious mocked. "Thanks so much for coming with me. I don't know what I would have done without someone here." She said sincerely. "Well, I had nowhere else to go, since you're my guide." He smiled at her. "Oh Yeah," She laughed, "I had forgotten about that. Sorry Sir, your guide is not okay today, do you mind waiting around?" "I'll wait until my guide is better." "Okay, then. Right choice, because without her you will be lost." She said making both laugh. "Are you actually telling a joke?" He asked surprised. "Something like that." She shrugged. "What time is it though?" "Just midday." He checked his watch and answered. "wow, time is running so fast, how long did I spend in that room?" "Not more than 30 minutes." "Really, it sure felt like hours." She said. "Are you in pain?" He asked. "Not really. Apart from a slight twinge in my pelvic, I feel totally okay." "That's good to hear." He smiled dropping a kiss on her forehead. "Aren't you hungry? What time can we leave?" She asked. "I'm not that hungry. We will leave when you are ready to go." He assured her. "I really appreciate your presence, I don't know...." "Stop." He cut her mid sentence. "I don't mind being here at all. Just sleep, okay?" "Okay." She answered after a long pause and lay back down slowly then closed her eyes, "Well, you too Should sleep." She grinned at him. "Sure thing." He smirked and laid beside her. He was going to rest his head just a little bit then will wake her up like two hours later. He drifted off to sleep immediately. Emerald looked at Marek as he lay there, asleep. How would fate bring a man that she had deeply connected with at the shitiest stage of her life facing such a situation. He was probably thinking she was a slut, a drunkard and a Wild person. Xiao hui's description of her also not helping. She really realised that She liked him. He made her laugh, which was a once in a while event. There was mostly little things that made her laugh, because she felt She had seen it all, even at an early age of twenty seven. Nothing felt new to her, but meeting Marek, she knew he was the one, although she didn't want to tell anyone or do anything suspicious, the moment was just not right. And She didn't want to put her hopes high because Marek was just visiting, he would leave very soon and was probably still in love with Xiao hui. What would he even want with someone like her, especially after what she had just done. She sighed and turned around on the bed, facing the wall, She curled up a little and slept off. She hoped after this event she would change and be happier. She felt that after all her crazy years, this moment was the breaking point and also the turning point. She really wanted a new life, stop pushing people away and try to start letting them in. She was too scared of getting hurt and was ending up making mistakes. Life was too short, She was supposed to embrace it not resist it.
